Given that my earliest ancestor, on my mom's side, to arrive in North America did so essentially as a stowaway, and under an alias, it's hard to track our family tree. According to my Grandma, he was caught hunting on crown land, and instead of facing punishment, snuck onto a ship and left. Only being discovered when the ship was at sail.

I’m most likely a descendant of a seneschal of Leinster who was given land by William Marshal. Nearly a thousand years later people in my family are still named after him. But as an American I’m not related to any presidents lol. My ancestors were their servants. I am related to a minor Irish founding father through the aforementioned Anglo-Norman knight. But through this line I have connection to two US presidents. My 3x great grandmother was a servant for both Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt. FDR and Eleanor paid for her bridal trousseau.

I found out when they finally found Richard III's remains and DNA tested it, that we're some kind of related, as we have the same mitochondrial DNA. I'm sure it's some kind of very distant relation, but it's pretty neat that my family actually looks a bit like him and Scoliosis runs in our family.
Also, after a few years of genealogy research and help from numerous distant relatives figured out that I might be related to Anne of Cleaves (related, not a direct descendant, obviously). Our family descends from her sister. My little sister and our cousin both actually look almost exactly like her famous Holbein portrait.
We're also related to James I/Mary Queen of Scots through an illegitimate daughter (of James, obviously). I think her name was Janet. It's been a long time since I looked at the records lol
Like you said, it's not exact, but it's interesting to see something like that.

I will say that pretty much everybody in England is related to King Edward III. King Richard isn't as common but I believe everybody who has English ancestors has a relation to Royalty somehow. It's a cool coincidence that these family members look similar. You see If we go back 21 generations we have like 2,097,152 ancestors. In England when Richard was born, there were around 1.9 million people, so you can see how its relatively common to have some sort of relation to royalty.

May I ask through which sister of Anne of Cleves? That would make you either related to the house of wettin and therefore to the kings of Saxony or to Empress Elizabeth of Austria - Hungary

    • @MuricaTurkey
      @MuricaTurkey 2 роки тому +7

@@thelisapisa It's been at least a decade since I went through the stuff I found, and I didn't take it very seriously, as it's not really provable (unlike the Richard III DNA). I also suffer from memory loss due to a recent health condition. So, unfortunately (and embarrassingly) I don't remember 🤦‍♀️
But considering the fact I had some ancestry DNA testing done and I don't seem to have any Hungarian DNA, I would guess it's the other sister.
But again, it's not something I take very seriously. More like an interesting curiosity. Like he says, being related to royalty isn't really that special nor is it really meaningful beyond some kind of fun, unofficial trivia.
I am curious now though to remind myself which sister it was. So I'll probably look when I get a chance and try to respond here later.

It's really interesting to find the Whitcomb last name here, here in Argentina a British man named Alexander Witcomb (1835-1905) established the first photographic studio on the country at the end of the 19th century. That's where some of the most iconic photographs of Argentine history were taken, like the full body portrait of President Julio Argentino Roca at 1900, and some sources say it also photographed Presidents Sarmiento and Mitre among others.

The Atlantic covered this nearly twenty years ago in an article called "The Royal We", which pointed out how the exponential growth of our family trees into the past means we are ALL related in the relatively recent past, including to the royal houses of Europe.
Edit: the article points out how Saddam Hussein always claimed to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Mohamed, who fathered a good many children. Saddam was most certainly correct.

I made a family tree when I was in my early 20's, and I used to think it was impressive until I realized how common it was. I am pretty closely related to a couple handfuls of US Presidents though, like closer than Mr. Beat is to President Eisenhower.

On my workplace in Munich in Germany I have a collegue, she comes also from very old noble families. She is the great-great granddaughter in maternal line of the bavarian kings. She is also a descendant of Sophie from Palatinate, the woman, who is by the Act of settlement from 1707 the mother of the british royal family - she is arround position 2,100 of the appearant list for the british throne. And, ansolutly crazy: she is a descendant of Pope Paul III.

I'm related to 11 US Presidents through 4 of my ancestors, and all of them are through my great grandfather on my mom's mother's side. One ancestor of mine is a guy named James Adams, who is my 10th great grandfather, and he's not related to John Adams, but he is an ancestor of president Calvin Coolidge. Another one is a guy named Robert Goodale, one of my 11th great grandparents, and through him, I'm related to president William Howard Taft. Another guy is a man named Thomas Spencer, who connects me to 2 presidents through their wives. Thomas Spencer is my 10th great grandfather, and he is an ancestor of Nancy Reagan and Jill Biden, so through him, I'm related to presidents Ronald Reagan and Joe Biden through marraige. And finally the man who connects me to 6 presidents, John Wheeler, my 11th great grandfather. John Wheeler connects me to James Garfield, Chester Arthur, Herbert Hoover, Gerald Ford, and the 2 Bushes. So, I'm related to the Bushes through Wheeler, and because you and Mr. Beat are related to the Bushes, to both of you, I can say.... Hello, cousins:):):):):):) And Also, I can say hello cousins because I'm related to Eisenhower's wife Mamie, through a man named Reverend William Pratt, my 12th great grandfather.

See theres an issue for me. While my grandparents on my fathers side can easily traced back to early 1900s Russian decent, my moms side is a lot more challenging. My moms great ancestors were some of the first people to migrate from France to the St. Lawrence colony. Over time they most likely intermarried with local Canadian natives, making me French and Canadian if you go back centuries but as you mentioned it's difficult to trace back to the 1500s and so it will be challenging to ever know if I'm connected to French royal families. But I may be connected to some far Eastern European royals as I am incredibly Russian and most likely part Polish, Finnish and Ukrainian so one of those have to work right?

Eunice Whitcomb Bezanson may descend from an ancestor who lived in Besançon or a town named after it. Besançon is a French city whose name is very fun to say. The name derives from classical Latin _Vesontio_ with a probably Celtic origin. But the name got clobbered over time, sort of like Cologne. And now we have the objectively silly name "Bezanson."

Apparently I'm a direct descendant of king Henry the 7th. This wouldn't put me in the line of succession because I'd need to be a direct descendant of Sophia of the Palatinate which to me knowledge I'm not. P.S even if I was in line for the thrown there'd be hundreds of others before me. Edit: I did some extra research and I'm 17th Cousins four times removed to queen Elizabeth.

It doesn't take that many generations before we are all pretty much related. It has been estimated that just about all modern Europeans are descended from Charlamagne. I myself am related to President John Adams. I believe I'm related to him about 4th cousins about 7 times removed (I would have to look it up again for accuracy). Probably every American is just about as closely related if not closer I would think.

If Charlemagne from over a thousand years ago in a world with such a huge, international population as we have today can be so prevalent in our genealogies Imagine even farther back in time in smaller scale civilizations.

    Fun Fact:
John Prescott (7:48) was one of the many English settlers part of The Great Puritan Migration (1620-1641) and one of the first settlers in what is now Worcester County, Massachusetts. Along with other settlers, John managed to found the Nashaway Plantation in 1643, most likely named after the Nashaway indigenous tribe local to Worcester County at the time.
Eventually, the plantation would be incorporated into the town of Lancaster, Massachusetts in 1653, named after John Prescott's home town in England before settling.

I was watching a show on PBS about Annie Oakley. A professor from North Carolina Univerity was speaking about her, and I noticed the professor's surname was the same as my maternal grandmother's maiden name. I dug up her emaill address from the school website and asked if she knew much about her family history. She told me it was her married name BUT her husband did a lot of family history work and gave me his email. Turns out yes, we are distantly related. In 1722 a married couple with that name came to the colonies. They'd had a lot of kids, including several sons.I was descended from one son, he from another. We are seventh cousins once removed. Another man, descended from a third son, was prominent in US government in the latter part of the nineteenth century. He and I would be third cousins five times removed.

I don’t know exactly where our family tree split off but allegedly the Bush’s are direct descendant of Mary Chilton, who was allegedly the first woman to step off the Mayflower. My family is not a descendant of Mary Chilton but we have a common male ancestor with her and by extension the Bush’s.
