    I enjoyed watching Tom's patience and cutting back to the power source/foam ball waiting for it to stand up. He has an incredible connection with utilizing the wave energy and when it slows down or is not drawing off the bottom he just waits for his moment then compresses into his classic trademark curren bottom turn.
    I also liked Clayton's analogy of the duck's body being still and the legs going, Tom makes adjustment with his leg compression and extension while keeping his trunk relaxed. He particularly compresses coming out of turns while most people get up too high at the top of their turn and come off the back of the wave. Great breakdown with coaches eye Clayton

    I’m old, so I grew up watching Tom compete and as my inspiration. As surfing changed over the years starting with Kelly and that whole group, I gravitated more toward free surfing videos not comps. I liked Rob’s style who never looked like he was trying to kill a wave, but that didn’t win many comps. This video proves that over and above anything, is the need to be able to read a wave. As the saying goes ‘Style never goes out of fashion’ I’ll keep watching and keep trying. Thanks guys.
    Ps. Don’t have a job, don’t have any money, don’t have any prospects, but just got what looked like the last Carver in the UK. (Thanks MasterCard) I’m nothing if not optimistic.😎

    so great!! biggest take away are probably a couple of things that you have been talking about that I know I don't do enough - point my board straight down the wave and go right back to the foam! It's so clear in this clip

    Most shiney gold nugget - relaxing the muscles in the body helps you FEEL the wave more and thereby respond better

    I was 14, surfing in Santa Cruz, when Tom was born. I'd say surfing Rincon a lot gave him his style. This movie is really exceptional. You guys doing a review is a great idea.

    loved how he took his time and read the wave before doing the cardboard surfer into a bottom turn...ill take this mindset into my next surf as i struggle with good bottom turns...most probably cause I'm rushing them to begin with.

    • @ombesurf
      @ombesurf  3 роки тому

      Absolutely, just waits for the right moment, nothing is rushed.

  • @fitstrong404
    @fitstrong404 3 роки тому +3

    This is excellent. I also laughed out loud at the beginning! Thanks for going through this. I love Tom Curren anyway but watching this has just made me appreciate him even more. Biggest take away......how he surfs right next to the foam ball. I am also guilty of racing away down the line too fast and therefore trying to turn when there's no power in the wave (or less power).
    Heres an interesting question....Do you think the tendency to race off down the line has to do with where you grew up surfing (or where you surf the majority of the time)? I learnt to surf in the UK and not renowned for its long peeling waves I always felt I had to make the most of the wave whilst it held up and so it has been ingrained to race off before it closes out!

    • @mcbudget
      @mcbudget 3 роки тому +2

      Yes i think you’re right. Growing up on California point breaks (like Curren at Rincon) would help develop awareness of where the power source of the wave is. You just get more time on each wave to read it and find a rhythm. That’s harder in junky beach breaks.

    • @ombesurf
      @ombesurf  3 роки тому

      Great point... Where you grew up could be a factor for sure, there are so many elements that can come in to play as well though, fear being a big one of those elements.

    • @fitstrong404
      @fitstrong404 3 роки тому

      @@ombesurf Yep, absolutely. I love what you guys are doing and am definitely applying it to my surfing. Slowing everything down is a big one for me (and getting the coffee cup arm pointing forward). I am trying to learn how to relax and let the wave dictate things rather than doing everything (badly) at 100 miles an hour to try and get the most I can out of the wave, thinking its going to close out! 😂

    Use the wave to maintain/increase speed, nose to the beach. Use trailing arm (coffee cup) to initiate and complete turns. Thank for the breakdown :-)

    Such a good analysis! Pointing out the back arm going over the top on the cutbacks and top turns was really good. Also, Tom Curren's new nickname should be THE KING OF COFFEE (or maybe just Starbucks)

    Golden Nuggets:
    1- How many times you look at the fome
    2- High back arm
    3- look for the power zones, wait for them, do not rush it. The wave has it's own time.
    4- relax bitch. Relax.

    Throughly enjoy your chats. I also agree that this movie was entertaining. I can't agree with you on Tom being an amazing surfer. Tom's surfing shows constant hesitation from a style that grew from mimicking others.
    Many of the stars of the late 80s had similar issues. It was second generation of pro surfers and everything about surfing competition was changing daily.
