Surfed all those spots with him at various times mid 70’s- Late 80’s. Cool to see footage at some of those on some good days. Tom, always humble and just one of the crew in the water.

It's real hard to say GOAT these days with all the young guns showing their stuff.
Tom had a rhythm with the wave that few else have.
Very few "pumps", just flowed. That's what the new gen lacks - flowing with the rhythm of the wave. They all look like they're in fight mode.

Top style masters all time. Totally agree regarding his flow. Artistry how he paints the waves.

A samurai master won't have a flashy style like his apprentice, but he can still fight better.

Heck yes Josh! It's amazing that I have never experienced Tom's surfing while I have been a photographer. As many times as I've shot Rincon and other spots the elusive legend has never paddled out. There was that day at Harbor that you and Tom showed up but I had been there for 7 hours already and split.... Great work my friend, see you soon I'm sure

Christian Fletcher was better..... Back then, contests gave higher marks for hopping to the beach than if you lobbed 6' of air over the guy paddling out but didn't REACH THE BEACH.

If you're gonna make a case for Tom being the GOAT, these weren't very good clips to make a strong case.
Occy had a better winning percentage one on one.
Free surfing Christian Fletcher, Tom Carroll and JBG were better.
Then there's the era that followed the 80's.... Tom ain't even close to J.J.F., A.I., Ke11y, Mason Ho, and many more.

    • @fernandomaron87

For me A.I was the goat, i don't care what anyone else says, no one attacked big strong waves with that power and control while looking that composed like Irons did imo.

yet here we are still admiring his style, flow and how he connects with the energy of the wave. Winning percentage means bull crap when the guy is still out there making it look graceful and easy. Can't say that with many.
