Yes I converted a 1995 Stevens Classic Tour into a 1x 10 Gravel bike back in 2019, it is now one of my favourite bikes, also doubles as a winter road bike with 32mm road tyres until the forest tracks dry up in spring. 😊👍

Your channel has been elemental in my cycle building journey. I've obsessed over my mtb projects for the past few years, and it's been really nice to have this resource. Your videos are soothing and instructional at the same time. On top of that, the frames you use are some of the coolest I've ever seen. I currently ride a rigid '91 Schwinn Paramount PDG50 set up for gravel and a '96 Trek 970 with a Manitou EFC fork for more aggressive stuff. I'm even considering pogo sticking them with some fresh steed springs, lol. There is a lot of consumer pressure out there to have the latest tech, and your channel helps me find solace in using these bikes and parts that I actually feel connected to, even if I know they aren't the latest and greatest. Also, the amount of manufacturing and waste is a growing issue, and reusing and upcycling eases my mind. So I feel I at least owe you a thanks and a congrats on having one of the best (my favorite) bike build channels out there. Wishing you peace in the hard times. And now it's time to do some rolling meditation. ; )
P.S. - The way I found your channel was through researching a repair for my Estwing hatchet, which you had posted a video for very recently at the time, so kudos to that handy work as well.

I am going to generalize here a bit. I've converted both a vintage road bike and a 90s mountain bike to gravel bikes. The big limiting factors for the road bike for me are tire clearance and bottom bracket height. The 90s mountain bike has no issues with bottom bracket height. The tires clearance switching to 700c wheels limits my tire widths to 38mm with a fork change. I'll be on the lookout for some worthy Dad's bikes:)

Great video and spot on! Last year I found a first-generation Bianchi Advantage (1993 original release I think) with Ishiwata Double Butted tubes with some basic lugs and brazed one stay bridges and attachment points with some lovely tapered unicrown forks (labeled Bianchi Special Tubing before they moved to lower end tubing and tig welding and adding a cheapo front sus fork.) and cantilever brakes mounts with longer chainstays and a great head-tube angle... Definitely worse for wear with lots of seized and rusty parts (came from Michigan and was used for winter commuting on salty roads)... but it cleaned up well, I named her Ruby (cuz she is very red), tossed on some cyclocross 700x35 tires and continue to play with the build and cockpit... she is a fantastic riding bike and much more capable than I would have thought. My next iteration will be better wheels, chainstay dimpling for more rear tire clearance, and a brake upgrade. etc. In a lot of ways she is my favorite bike, tackles terrain that used to be in my mind "only for MTBs" and has become the quintessential "underbiking rig" (aka [F]underbiking)... Every ride she challenges my fitness and bike handling skills... (I am a 68ys rider) and that means sand and rocks and steep climbs and off-camber goodness on horrible desert/east side of the Sierra north of Reno by about 20 miles. So mums the word on these fantastic "700c" dad bikes... they truly rock and are a fantastic alternative to the bike industry's race oriented gravel scene. Super fun and cost to run and play with... imagine my joy when you posted this... great bikes and I love them even more than my 26" resto mod fleet. Take care and thanks for the great video!

Don't have access to old Specialized or GTs in my area but we do have a lot of Canadian branded Raleigh 26" wheel 90s mountain bikes and other lower end consumer bikes. I love working on and riding them. I converted one to single speed that I use for short trips or anywhere I need to lock it up unattended, it looks like a piece of crap but that's on purpose, rides like a dream. Best of all it cost me $25 plus another $35 on new cables, brake pads and tubes. You can't beat that for value for your money.

Best to you and your family. And still managing to share your gifts! I stumbled on 96-97 Scott Santa Cruz is the definition of a hybrid Dad bike. 3x8 Alvio drive, steel tour bike frame except high clearance 700c wheels. I have fit 50mm tires with i26 rims to try but will drop to 42-44 to run fenders. Mavic wheels. I found in beautiful condition and need only to upgrade the bottom bracket to sealed bearing set. I am going to change up the handle bars to VO Crazy bars and new headset. Twist grip shifters to thumb friction shifters. The twist shifters will go on a winter bike that has bar mitts on all season. My back and shoulders need more upright for long rambles. It is the perfect conversion to country or rando style bike.

I did a gravel conversion on a 1994 (I think) Cannondale H400. It works beautifully for gravel. It’s light, quick, takes wider tires without concern, and seems like a natural with a 1x10 drivetrain.
Frankly, it was not the cheapest conversion. I needed a new rear wheel, I installed V brakes, and a new drivetrain. But it’s fun and I LOVE those old Cannondale frames. I may take it out today.

Well, it was not my best idea 😁.
But I also have an old trekking frame from the nineties from Winora and now that I've seen your video, it is yet the better frame to build my gravel bike.

It's not a dad bike or a gravel bike, per se, but one of my favorite bikes right now is a 95 Marin Bear Valley I bought to flip during the pandemic. When I got it home I noticed a small dent in the top tube and was hesitant about selling it at first so I started riding it instead. Now it's a 1x8 go most places bike that I've probably sunk way too much money into but I love it.

First year of COVID 2020, I updated my 1994 Marin Pine Mountain (original owner) Tange Prestige tubing (3x8) to 1x11. I was not frugal. Fortunately, there were deals on Shimano XT M8000 components and went with Absolute Black 36T chainring. And Jones H-Bar 2.5. Have Maxxis Minion DHF 2.1. Planning to tinker again, trying out Rene Herse Rat Trap 2.3 (Endurance) and 11-46 XT Cassette. My wife's almost new '94 Gary Fisher Montare is waiting to get attention. Might turn it to 1x11 and convert the Marin to a drop bar all-around 2x11.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I found as I got older the simplicity of my 26/27.5 single speeder was getting a bit limited at times so I thought about a gravel bike. The costs are so much higher than a 1x10 mtb so thinking a little and doing my research I found that 29ers are quite happy with 700c Teravail tyres, bingo, a few more mods, ditching the Deore clutch mech and shifter for NOS XTm781 mech and Microshift thumb shifter which has given me the creamiest shifting and a set of carbon forks to replace the Rockshox fork and I’m done. I did get a great deal on the 29er and after all the mods it’s still way cheaper than a traditional gravel bike.

I have CF bikes, and Ti bikes and I love them but there will always be an inexpensive steel retro modded 90's MTB and some kind of hybrid/flat bar-Street Fighter in my stable that I can just jump on and ride. Truth is if it wasn't for those inexpensive bikes I wouldn't have the more expensive ones that I love so much, because they are not the bikes I fell back in love with cycling riding and tinkering with, and all my bikes, even the crazy 5.8kg Di2 full internal cable nightmare I just finished are built from the frame up with the knowledge I gained tinkering with old steel.

Agreed on all points. After the 90s MTB insanity of the past few years, hybrids are still sorta reasonable--I fear these awesome bikes will be declared the Next Big Thing in the hobby and it's gonna ruin the fun.

Original owners of these HyDad bikes are now into golf, Tommy Bahama shirts and ebikes. Perhaps u could even trade for some Nike Air Monarchs OTD ⚡

There are advantages I think you should include; 1. Better bike. 90s dad bikes are low tech, and better than these so called high tech 'improvements'. 2. Health benefits of getting back on a bikes are a savings on medical costs. 3.Environmental. even if you only use it 10% of what you travel in a car.....you are still saving the environment. 4. Efficient. Some say a man on a bike is the most efficient transportation on this planet. that include birds and animals.

Beware hybrid bikes that shipped with narrow tires. You could wind up with an otherwise great bike with limited tire clearance, not great for gravel. That's my situation. Next time I'll start with a rigid mountain bike.

Чому варто? Страрі велосипеди прості у ремонті і недорогі. А для простої поїздки не потрібен велосипед який коштує 10 000$.

Dad bike is a term coined by the young guns that work at bike shops. Not really an offensive term in my book and it aptly defines the mountain bike from the 1990's. Pro's of a dad bike? Rock solid components coupled with a steel frame albeit heavier but for a commuter so what?

I'll pass I'm not a fan of coustom it costs to much to do rather its new components or used you don't really tell the while truth you can build because of your sponsors people like myself that doesn't have the help like you cannot build there dream ride

    • @anotheryoutuber_
      @anotheryoutuber_ Рік тому +2

definitely just depends on your dream and timeline. there are definitely bike co-ops and organizations that will let you borrow tools and a stand in their shop, they can have so many parts they will often give certain ones away, and if you can find the availability to volunteer they can give you priority on things that get donated. but this channel should definitely do a video on a shop like that to show what they are like.

He did say it's for the tinkerer. I'll have to call up my LBS and ask how to much my three conversions would have cost me if I had him do everything. It also depends on what parts are going for in your area... or online if you're willing to have things shipped. Also.... patience. Many things to consider, especially for the first timer. Luckily I've already built up a modest bicycle tool kit (some new....some old, like my park tool stand and a truing stand). Dope thing these days is if I don't know how to do something there's someone on youtube that has a how-to. Park tools, RJ the bike guy are great examples.....and Sheldon Brown's website is very helpful as well.
