until I saw this video I never really realised what life could have been like were I to have had a Dad that had the slightest interest in his children. The friendship that you and your Dad share is something extraordinary and special
Absolutely brilliant stuff. Hilarious, when George started explaining the Canyon after extensively stating he hasn't been on a bike for 25 years. Cracked me up.
I ride a ebike because I have two dodgy knees and a heart problem, without the extra power the motor gives I'd be limited to 4-5 miles and struggle with slight hills (the one closest to me that I'd really struggle with is about 4%). But with the ebike I can handle 25 miles, possibly a bit further on the lower power settings (levels 1 & 2 out of 4), only hopping up the power setting for hills. Ebikes do have a part to play in the future of cycling, especially in helping people switch from car/bus to cycle commuting and e-mountain bikes can help people explore some of the more rougher trails. Sure some purists might not like them but each too their own, cycling can cover a very broad spread.
Good luck. Great that you can keep on cycling. E bikes are the future of transport (even though I don’t ride one) Just have to get that message out there.
@jriden why is it bad for the 'sport'? People ride a bike for all sorts of reasons and this gives the opportunity to those who may suffer from injuries or confidence issues which make riding a non ebike difficult. The more people we get our of their cars and riding a bike the better.
My dad luckily is relatively fit and has a nice bike. I love riding with him and cherish every opportunity. COVID has put a damper on our rides but I'm hoping we can resume together once things settle down. (I travel for work so even though I try to be as careful as possible, it's still a risk I'm not willing to expose him to)
Michael Jolley I totally agree with you. My Dad passed away 5 years ago, I never got to do this with him. Make the most of what you have people, as the people who mean the most to you won’t be around forever.

This was by far the most enjoyable GCN vid I've seen in years. George is pure gold and Hank is solid as well (as always). Loved seeing how chuffed Hank was with riding with his dad and it was impressive to see how well Georgie did on the ride and in front of the camera. Perhaps Lloydy should be looking over his shoulder as he may be bumped as GCN's senior statesman.
This was wonderful to see. I've been riding with my son for 18 years (He'll be 21 in March). in and around Vancouver and have had a blast doing it. An amazing way to spend time with your loved ones. :-)
Hank's dad a total sport! I'd like to have a ride and a beer with him. My dad's 66 and fit as a fiddle. He runs and goes skiing, so I'm planning to get my spare bike going and take him for a 25-30k ride. He hasn't been doing much bicycling the last 30 years or so, but he'd be alright.
Hank's dad would make a perfect series to show you are never too old to pick cycling! And show how much better we would feel from picking cycling/ a sport in later years in life. Well done he did amazing and was an enjoyable video 😁

All my best memories of growing up are from doing things with my parents like hiking, fishing, road trips, golf and just spending time together. These are the things your kids will remember and cherish, not the toys or games you buy them. So get out, do something with you kids and make some memories!
I love GCN, but this was my favorite! As a dad to two 20-somethings that ride, I can relate. I can still keep up without a motor, but I am certain I'll need a motor in 10 years! THANK YOU...tremendously entertaining!
I have to say, the videos with the brother-in-law (Conor), dad (Hank), and wife and son (Dan) are some of my favorites. You all have lovely families and make cycling seem very accessible.
That was totally awesome. Good on him for giving it a go and doing it in an outstanding manner. That hill attack was downright vicious. No competitive spirit there at all. Must run in the family. Been trying to talk my wife into an e bike. She watched this and may now give it a go. Thanks and have a good day, Al
When I visit my dad in Brazil, we run together. I slow down. He's 82. We've done a lot of sports together. Unfortunately, I don't have a bike there to cycle with him, but once in a while we can borrow one. My dad is a beast on his bike!
To be in proper "Top Gear" fashion though, the father should have been shown cruising past the son with the basket on the front of the bike containing a cooler of iced down beer while drinking a beer and not pedaling or exerting any effort.
Literally one of the top 10 videos you’ve ever done team. Pulling in the family member, doing something fun and different. Shoot dad was finally honest about the bike in the video “its ugly”, “feeling all the bumps”, etc. Great to follow along on a full ride with them too! Well done GCN team and dad!
Emotional, Entertaining, Down to earth... Best Video I have ever seen GCN!! Huge respect for Hank's Dad!! We need him on the channel.. Please .. Please!!

Fantastic content and unlike Jack Whitehall and his dad the humor was always light hearted and full of affection between dad and son. Even before the banter at the end I knew GCN should do a (Bike) Travels with My Dad series. Make it so!
Hank, first and foremost you are lucky man to have such a good sport of a dad. I have been looking forward for this video and have to say thanks for this GCN. Thoroughly good fun. I'm with Hanks dad. I don't wish to look like " a turnip dressed up in granny stockings" either.
I adore this video. His shoes. His lack of fitness. His willingness to make a video with his son. I feel the same with my pops. I've got him set up on a carbon gravel bike but it's always a treat when he actually rides with me. And he was the one who got me interested in cycling in the first place. His passion and patience paved the way for me.
This is a great video, and thanks for raising the profile of ebikes. My brother is about 500% fitter than me but we both love to cycle, so when I visited him in California I rented an ebike which meant we could ride together without him getting frustrated or me dying :)
I don't think it's something that can be disabled. I'm pretty sure that's just the fastest the motor can assist with. If you go faster then that, the motor will disengage to prevent it from burning out. There are certainly some e-road bike models that are assisted up to a higher speed then this and I would like to watch the episode again with one of those being used.
@@only1sn1not1taken You can disable it with an appropriate dongle costing around £150 (would invalidate your warranty). The Bosch motor is restricted to 15.5mph (250 watts continuous) to comply with UK law. It is quite capable of assistance to maybe 25mph. In the US the assistance limit is 20mph (class 1 I think) using the same Bosch motors. The 15.5mph assistance is arbitary and quite low and when you hit the assistance limit the bike is much more difficult to pedal than a standard road bike. I would suggest the bike used in the vid if de-restrcted even with 'dad' riding would have possibly won even though its a shopping commuter bike and the race bike being much faster on the flats and downhill due to the gearing. Even as in the video, its great that someone relatively unfit can enjoy a challenging ride that they would have little chance of completing (certainly not enjoying) without the motor assistance.
@@martinlong8739 This puts a lot of strain on the bearings in the motor. So it's quite probable that you best to replace them, which is not easy on Bosch motors.
@@jean-cyrillkreuer6410 Hello there, replacing Bosch bearings is not an easy job as you know and requires a press (to remove the bearings) and the ability to disassemble the motor to access them. However bearing failure on Bosch motors is invariably caused by water getting into the motor casings. It is highly unlikely to be caused by raising an arbitrary restriction of 15.5mph. The very same Bosch motors are sold in the US with a 20mph restriction as class 1 ebikes. See this Bosch page listing the very same motors sold with assist to 15.5mph in the UK being sold with assist to 20mph in the US www.bosch-ebike.com/us/products/drive-units/ They are good motors they can easily handle it and more. Excellent! As a son, father and (now) grandfather the video captured everything that is good about hanging out with your child and father. As an editorial comment, I am glad my son doesn't take me on roads as busy as shown in the video. Good on "Hank's dad!" He is a sport. Cheers to the ebike for bringing new folks into our sport/past time.
What a great Vid. Love Hanks dad. Having lost my old man 3 years ago, I'd give anything to go for a ride with him. Treasure the time you all have with your parents. Make great memories like this.
As someone who’s a similar age to Hank and has witnessed their own Father recently getting really into cycling, we’ve been riding together and I can properly appreciate the excitement Hank shows at the start in being able to share your hobby with your dad. Hope you get to do some more rides with him Hank, it’s the best :)
You have me remembering the rides my father took me on when I was very young, teaching me how to safely ride on the road. Enjoy the opportunities you have to ride with your father. Great video, guys.
You can get mirrors for your bike. Helmet, wrist or handlebar mounted. I have one on my commuter that plugs into the bar end. They're great if you've got young kids as well, because you can then keep an eye on them from in front or behind.
I watched this entire video with a big smile on my face. You have a special relationship with your dad Hank. Just like I had with mine. I wish he was here so I could do something similar. Thank you GCN for making me remember many happy moments I spent with my dad while I was watching this video.
What a brilliant video!! Fair play the George riding that bike that distance. I know what will be on his Christmas list as I reckon he will keep it up!!
My friend stayed with her parents during the lockdown here and came back converted to E-bikes (and probably puffer vests, they go hand in hand for the older set), and her mum keeps suggesting she buys one. At $4,000 minimum, maybe not, but she loves it as wants one too!
I really enjoyed this father/son duel and I would imagine Hank's Dad figured he was riding a modern moped and nothing wrong with that. Yesterday on the road I saw a gent riding a new Honda trail bike styled like the Honda 50 Dax I had in the Seventies. Four hours later I was at work and I saw him pull into the parking lot. And he must have been having a good time on his joy ride.
"Should we take on Europe?" "Yeah, let's do France." This idea stayed relevant for quite some time now, eh? You might want to consider choosing a route through Belgium..
What an awsome video. Your dad is a legend as are you. I recently got an E-bike after 45 years of not cycling and I absolutely love it. I'm 66 years old BTW.
That's awesome, Howard! We think E-Bikes are absolutely great - if they get more people sat on saddles turning pedals then they're a winner in our book! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I absolutely LOVE their relationship. What EVERY Dad and their Children deserve. George, Sir, you are smashing and such a wonderful person. Hank, you're an awesome sport and have loved every minute of your contributions to GCN.
Dad: ~disappears into the distance at every opportunity~ Seriously, though, it's clear that they were having fun and making a story for the cameras. And we only saw about 15 minutes of what was probably a 90-minute ride. (Hank Sr's top speed was 17mph and they did 21 miles.)
Next Dad/Hank challenge: Off-road. Hank on a MTB, Dad in a tank.
I'd watch that

Super video - hank is so likeable and apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Well done hanks dad
What a great Vid. Love Hanks dad. Having lost my old man 3 years ago, I'd give anything to go for a ride with him. Treasure the time you all have with your parents. Make great memories like this.
This was a bloody good watch. The crowd want more!
Wanted to leave a comment just to say how wonderful this video was, truly genuine and Hank's father is an absolute gem AND a badass!
Why did no one commented on that massive burn Hank's dad delivered right at the beginning, when he commented on Hank and Lycra?
Whoa! Javier in the wild! I also thought this vid was great. Would be fun to see them riding up Mt Rokko or out west.
Lol, in the wild, a rare sight. Yes, it would be!
Dan’s son can already take him. And I reckon Si’s dad, Matt Stephens, probably rides more than he does...
Matt is Si's father???? OMG!!! That sounds like a beginning of a beautiful soap opera!
Wait what?! For real???😅😅😅
That's kinda funny 😄
@@IraklyShanidze00X nah I think that’s just OCs head cannon. Matt was 13 when Si was born
You have me remembering the rides my father took me on when I was very young, teaching me how to safely ride on the road. Enjoy the opportunities you have to ride with your father. Great video, guys.
i dont care but bro! your dad is a tank comannder !!!! thats so cool!!
One of the best videos on UA-cam. What could be better than a bike ride with your dad? Thanks for sharing that, it was very heartwarming.
Love it! What a Legend Hank‘s Dad is!
Great video! Thanks to Hank and Dad, and all production members. Really enjoyed that.
You already lost from the start, he was a tank commander !!
Certainly one of the very best GCNs ever! Your dad is a legend and NEEDS to feature on GCN more often. 🙂👍
I agree with your dad ref wing mirrors. I have switched from motor bikes to bicycles and the old neck isn't as flexible as it used to be
You can get mirrors for your bike.
Hank is just an amazing presenter, pure carisma and always making the videos interesting. Miss his duo with Opie.
litteraly the best gcn vid i've ever seen xD
I really enjoyed this father/son duel and I would imagine Hank's Dad figured he was riding a modern moped and nothing wrong with that. Yesterday on the road I saw a gent riding a new Honda trail bike styled like the Honda 50 Dax I had in the Seventies. Four hours later I was at work and I saw him pull into the parking lot. And he must have been having a good time on his joy ride.
"Should we take on Europe?" "Yeah, let's do France."
This idea stayed relevant for quite some time now, eh?
You might want to consider choosing a route through Belgium..
What an awsome video. Your dad is a legend as are you. I recently got an E-bike after 45 years of not cycling and I absolutely love it. I'm 66 years old BTW.
That's awesome, Howard! We think E-Bikes are absolutely great - if they get more people sat on saddles turning pedals then they're a winner in our book! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Oh my this video reminds me a classic version of the Top Gear lol
Indeed
I absolutely LOVE their relationship. What EVERY Dad and their Children deserve. George, Sir, you are smashing and such a wonderful person. Hank, you're an awesome sport and have loved every minute of your contributions to GCN.
"The older you get the less you want to get your leg over"
I loved watching a son and father having fun on their bike. He clearly loves his dad and it was beautiful to watch!
"It's great to ride a bike with my dad"
~Leaves his dad to ride by himself the entire ride~
Dad: ~disappears into the distance at every opportunity~
Seriously, though, it's clear that they were having fun and making a story for the cameras. And we only saw about 15 minutes of what was probably a 90-minute ride. (Hank Sr's top speed was 17mph and they did 21 miles.)
I have never smiled or laughed so much watching a GCN video before! So good to watch.
What an adorably manly cunning gentleman, respect.
One of the best GCN videos. Hilarious and heartwarming. What a bond. I swear I cheered when the dad caught up.
Dad is a legend
Absolutely enjoyable show, good work. Hank's dad is a good sport, and has a great sense of humor...totally enjoyed this!
