Very good and informative video Jim. You do a great job providing a perfect overview of these plants. Going to get two Fire Chief Arborvitaes for my front yard

I planted 4 of these 2 years ago. I’m in zone 9a Deep South and we’ve had about 6 weeks of no rain and extremely high temperatures. It’s been in the triple digits with very hot nights and high humidity. I thought these would suffer but they have been a standout in this heat. I’ve lost a few plants but the Fire chief arbs are doing well!

The summary screen at the end is very useful for grabbing a screen shot. Thanks.

I live in northern Indiana zone 6a and a few weeks ago I bought three Fire Chiefs and they are doing well. I wanted to buy more but three was all they had. I plan on buying more next year.

These aren't usually my kind of plants, but this one looks and sounds amazing! I just ordered one to put into the garden.

Love these got 5 planted at the house and picked up 2x huge 15 gallon ones for $13 each a few days back was a good deal I was jumping up and down like a kid lol I love shrubs. I keep mine pruned around 6 inches up to expose trunk and they look like little avatar trees lol. This shrub and the gold mop cypress are some of my favorite conifers for sure don't ask how many of those I have planted I can't count :).

Hi Jim, love this fire chief video!!! Can you tell me what bright green plants are right next to the fire chiefs? They looked great together. Love your videos.

I love mine. I’m in mid Georgia zone 8a. They are in full sun all day. No sign of burn at all. Of course this will be their first brutal august. Time will tell. Lol

When my currently huge happy pinus strobus “blue shag” gives out in 7b I’ll replace with this or mr. Bowling ball.

I’ve been wanting a conifer that grows well in full sun. This maybe the one.

I’m in pnw 8b and my potted Fire Chief got toasted a few years ago in a heat wave. I’ve since put it in the ground, but while it continues to get new growth and the beautiful coloration, there’s a good amount of brown inside and the shape is looser. Can I prune it at some point to tighten up the shape into the ball it used to be?

It amazes mr that a state so north - could be zone 8b 😳

@@rosiesingleton6480 Lots of different climates here due to mountains and ocean. Northwestern OR is mostly a temperate rain forest climate. Other parts are completely different! Pretty wild

QUESTION Do Fire Chief Arborvitae have shallow or deep roots? I’m asking because it would depend on the size pot I put it in. I’m in zone 8b, Foley, AL.

I just got one that will be going in the ground soon in 6b. The info on it before I bought said 24" ball shape, the info that came with it says 24" ball shape with no pruning..... but you say 48". If it's 4' that's going to be too big for where I want it.

Those look really nice. They grow best in the ground up north from you. They can be in a large container but are at risk in summer and late winter so I keep them in the ground.
Thuja must always be pronounced thoo-yah in every country with no European alternate.

Do you think it will get 4x4 in zone 6?

I’m in zone 6 in Kentucky and mine have been putting on about 6” of growth each year. I prune mine in late March by going down into the shrub and pruning the entire limb but not into the woody part. Then they slowly put on another 6” by late fall. I keep mine looking natural and not a clipped meatball. I never have to water them either in full sun heavy clay.

We looked at those and wanted them so bad but was afraid they would be deer candy. We had bowling ball and they destroyed them 😡
