When I hear the words 'frequency separation' my mind goes back to those horrendous plastic skin images that were all the rage a few years ago. Needless to say you have a lot more skill and taste than that. There is very little different between editing a portrait and a wildlife image. A great video as always, thank you.
Great video, Julia! I love how you take time in explaining how you edit the portrait rather than rushing through it as others do. You teaching points are quite easy to follow and very helpful
thank you for this! i did want to share a quick note for using the curves in lightroom.. you can create points (without moving them) by holding alt when clicking - and also hold alt when moving the points for finer/less dramatic adjustments - cheers!

I don’t know if it’s just me but a lot of times I actually don’t like lens corrections in Lightroom. I really like the vignetting and slight distortion. Granted this may not be the case for all photos but most photos I feel this way. Good edit 👍🏻

Thanks Julia your tutorial is great. Colour is very subjective but I have to say, the sample photo exposed canon 7d's shortcomings in colour rendition, not very accurate or true to life. I believe 35L + 5D4 would produce a much better starting point in the same scene.
Never seen the clone stamp used like that but I like the end result I’ve been doing the same but obviously use the paint tool for the tones layer and then d&b to blend but this seems quicker if I could just paint highlights as easily as you do.....mine always turns wonky and at your opacity and flow I can only imagine haha
I used to do it with the healing brush tool but I found stamp was so much easier and quicker! The stamp tool is similar to the paint tool, but you are able to sample a lot more colours rather than just one with the paint brush which I think might speed things up for you :) Also the speed just takes practice, you can try using a lower opacity if it looks funny!
Hi Julia, do you often change the camera profile when editing, or do you think that is not so important? I was editing changing the calibration to Adobe Vivid to get more vibrant colors, but after I felt that my editing was to harsh, maybe starting from zero, with Adobe Color is the most clever option after all. Thanks!
I always have my profile set to standard and I never change it since I shoot in RAW. With raw even if you choose a profile, you can remove all the profile edits when you open up your image to edit in Lightroom/Camera Raw, etc. I think it's more important to change if you're doing video or shooting in jpg!
Hey Julia, this may be off topic, but I noticed in your previous videos your lens says "Against me!". How did you do that? I tried searching and couldn't find it.
The original rubber band fell off my lens from using it so much, so the Against Me thing was a rubber band we got from one of their shows and was the perfect size to put around my lens to replace the old one!
Thank you!! Ah it could be because the photo file you're working on is a very different resolution to the file I created the action on. The action I created is a mostly one size fits all, but there could be instances where it doesn't work as well on some images! I have a video where I went through all the steps to create it here: ua-cam.com/video/En60tErTNZ4/v-deo.html&t I would recommend to make one for yourself to suite your photos as there are small things you can adjust along the way so it turns out correct! I hope that helps :)
Hi there! Thank you for your videos - they are helping me learn so much! I was practicing HSL and I am wondering if there is a way to change only certain areas with the same color - for example, to keep the lips of my human subject natural and bright, but toning down a pink or maroon shirt of a similar color.
Thank you! Unfortunately this is where Lightroom falls a little short. The only way to be able to do that is using an adjustment brush and brushing over the specific area that you want to change. I think capture one lets you do what you are after though! I have been meaning to try it out recently so hopefully I can make some new editing tutorials if I enjoy using it.
I realized the bokeh at the left side was messed up is that a camera thing or a lens thing. I would like to know cause I’m thinking of buying the 7d mark ii
One suggestion for your workflow: Instead of making individual layers for skin retouch, you can do them all on one layer, add a layer mask, then brush away the parts that were too heavy. Awesome tutorial, specifically enjoyed the split toning and curves :)

Many thanks for your tutorial. It certainly shows your understanding of the sliders in LR and refinement in PS. Although it is a personal thing, my view is that your LR edit is way over the top and a more natural edit can be done in about 30 seconds with a fraction of the steps, and you did not acknowledge 2 very cool sliders, calibration blue primary at the bottom together with offset orange in color. I did like your PS edit.

I have a question. How reliable are Memory cards for your camera after you have used them to the maximum, and then re-formatted them for your camera. I have a Nikon d3400 and I just buy new cards after one fills up to the maximum. Now I have Several cards and I don't want to continue like this. But I have been reluctant to re-format my cards and start over with that same card.
At (6:30 min) this change is too subtle , give to the photo this '60s-'70s (retro) looks, I don't like. I prefer the natural shadow color with not redish/bluedish shadows. This editing style remember me the Vietnam's photos in Time Magazine of the 60s-70's or National Geographic of this era (I'm 6-10yrs old). Look beautiful before you touch the shadows. But your tutorials are crystal clear to understand and to follow, Thanks.!!
I shoot with kit lens, pls tell me somebody is it lens that can't follow up other editing or its me, what I mean it, even thought I follow step by step editing never ends up like yours
I’ve done a photoshoot on a kit lens (I have a video about it on my channel) and regardless of gear it is possible to take nice photos + be able to edit them 😊 with my Lightroom tutorials I try to explain why I’m moving a slider and how it’s affecting my image so you can follow and do something similar. Every photo taken is different in terms of lighting, location, colour, etc. So if I do +10 exposure on my image, that might not necessarily work on yours or even on another photo from the same shoot that I did. If you follow my LR tutorials I would recommend to follow all the steps, but not copy them completely - so apply the slider and then adjust it compared to how it affects your image instead 😊 I hope that helps!

The 7d is a rental. I believe she only owns Canon and Sony full frames

That's just all up to personal preference though :) I love the retro look!
