a lot of great knowledge in this video! Not just walking with a pack is gonna give you the strength to overcome any obstacles. Having good gear, knowing how to use it, and the physical and mental strength to keep going is key!
Hmmm..., I'm at 225 now myself. I have an old surplus pack in the attic. I have some old barbell plates in the garage. Think I'll start walking down to the creek in the mornings. Thanks for the motivation.
I remember a while back all the Pathfinder instructors were challenged to make a critical skills video. They all had great ideas and content in their videos. I made a comment somewhere that if I were to say the most critical skill in my mind it would be physical fitness because your body is the ultimate tool. I enjoy seeing that being emphasized because it truly is in my mind the MOST important thing to consider. Physical fitness leads to long term survival in the everyday world as well. Great review Dave.
Lack of fitness = liability to yourself and to your group. That's the truth, and a good lesson. Skills are vital, gear is important, but what's it worth if you can't move? You're raising the bar again Dave, keep it up!
I used my GR0(older version of the 21L GR1) for the Indy GORUCK Constellation a couple weeks ago. It was plenty of pack for the required items plus my usual loadout. My usual ruck weight is 40lbs. Glad to see you getting into it!
Excellent! I tagged my son when I shared this, he's preparing for a 20K ruck challenge, to benefit veterans in our area. He's got an old surplus Alice that he's fitting out, I hope this might help him. Thanks!
Dave, awesome video! I wish I could give this vid more than one thumbs up. Why do I appreciate this so much? my two passions rucking and bushcraft collide! The 10 c's and conditioning ones body to carry the ruck that right there is the ying&yang of survivability. Thanks for the video and keep'em coming!
Great video Dave. Where I live on the South Coast of Australia, all my hiking is in mountainous areas. If I didn't keep fit, I wouldn't even be able to go for a day hike. It's amazing how many people (especially in the prepper community) invest all their time and energy into accumulating gear and none on physical fitness.
Love my GR1! Ive been using it as my everyday bag to and from work as well as vacations day hikes and anything in between for just over 3 years now and it looks and functions all the same as the day I received it. It is pricey compared to surplus but I agree with Dave in the fact I expect this pack to last a lifetime. The design is very fitness/ruck orientated and would not make be as great as other designs for extended stays in the wilderness. Does work great for day hikes though if you are just moving through and holds a water bladder nicely. Thank you for the review Dave I love seeing gear I have experience with get critiqued by someone who has far my experience than myself.
hi Dave I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your videos and that I am a huge fan. lately your videos while very informative have been very difficult to hear. I don't know what's been going on with that but I have a very hard time hearing what you have to say. I would say it's just me but I hear other videos just fine. please keep them videos coming, love all the information! God bless brother!
Looks like a great pack ! Yup got it all in there ! The ability to be able to lift your body plus 1/3 Rd more is very important ! Also it helps with hyperthermia. To be fit and injuries ! The stronger you are the less likely to twist or pull something! Take care brother
I've searched and searched for a well designed day packs and the closest I could find has been the Day Pack by Outdoors sold at Walmart for $25. It's actually very well made, lots of well thought, large space and a life time warranty. It's almost perfectly designed, with a few minor tweak would make it perfect in my mind. I really wish they would offer larger designs with a hip belt.
I agree with this and ive also been doing this for several weeks, not with the go ruck but with a heavier pack than I really need, just for the purposes mention here and I think its worthy to mention you can over do it so be careful and listen to your body. Its real easy to get hurt if you try to do to much too fast.
If you're looking for a pack with those specifications + a bit more have a go for the Hagofs Tight Pro XL; 30L pack, plate/water-pouch, pockets inside and out, options for extra (3L) pouches on the sides. I've put 1000+ km into mine. I've worn out three over the last 10 yrs, but that's from BOTH trekking and everyday use. I've used a lot of different pack/load systems, and nothing beats the Haglofs for endurance, durability, comfort and versatility.
Well said brother! Was wondering what all you trek around with, hopefully me and the family down here can follow the lead and get trekking. Awsome job Dave
To really enjoy this country out here you better be fit.. I know for the last 4 years due to some health issues I gained a lot... this last year I've been hiking, running, yoga (yeah thats right a cowboy doing yoga lol) eating a ketogenic diet and have lost close to 40lbs... if your going to really enjoy the outdoors you best get in shape ..no excuses and #nevertoolate .. good stuff
Dave that is so cool that you are doing the ruck training with the Rucker. I’m a GRT and I’ve done 5 Goruck events with the Rucker. Have you completed the Goruck Challenge? Thanks for all the great videos, I’m learning a lot!
Sir Dave Canterbury I wish you put out more videos I'll have Bella a frame for your backpack out of PVC pipe I seen one twice and cannot find it I was you put more of them out thank you sir
Dave, you could buy an external frame that fits you with the waste belt, and strap that go ruck pack to the frame. I think you have an ALICE frame laying around somewhere in all your gear that you could use.
Those straps on either side of the back of your pack are those the reflective tapes and if so where or what are they called they look like a good safe thing to have
Dave, have you ever considered making your own workout equipment from natural materials? Like using your rope spinner to make battle rope or climbing ropes from hemp? Carving a pair of gymnastic rings to be used with natural cordage? Using wooden pulleys to make a cable machine? Or simply using a log for squats and to bulk up your shoulders? There's a lot of options that my friends and I use when bushcrafting to get a good workout and do some martial arts.
Ohh another thing my Rothco large transport pack has the same amount of MOLLE as your pack. I put two of the USGI medical pouches on the front in woodland camo the square ones that take up 3 MOLLE spaces.
Dave, have you looked at z packs or hyperlight mountain equipment? Ultra light weight packs that are also bullet proof. You might want to look at their tents too. Just a thought. Thanks as always in promoting fitness, thinking ahead, and dirt time. Your friend, Cast Iron Kid
Thanks for the video Dave!! I have always been suspicious of packs and kits that didn't have some form of TP or wipe. I've seen dozens, maybe hundreds of kit/pack videos and maybe I've seen TP two or three times. Do these people actual spend time in the woods? Do they not wipe? Maybe I'm missing some bushcraft hack, but leaves aren't going to cut it. I take it everywhere. Thanks again for the vid. Always stellar.
Have you given any thought to checking out some the Go Ruck events? I know it doesn't fit with the general wilderness survival genre of the channel, but it would be pretty interesting to see.
Dave I'm wondering why your not carrying one of your own knives. I just tonight purchased the scorpion hd, and have been waiting on the phantom || blued to come back in stock.
Dave, I would like to see you make some videos that can speak to gear, survival sernarios, and common sense(sad I have to add this part) considerations for females getting into bushcrafting. Can you speak to some of the danger's or cautions that a female would face?
Love this series it's been motivating since I need to shed a few pounds as well. Have you found yourself in an emergency situation since you've been doing your UA-cam series? Just wonderin
Thanks Dave. To add....There is a must read book called Alaska: tales of death and survival. It is irresponsible and puts search and rescue peoples' lives at risk to go into the woods unprepared and unfit. Basic calisthenics go a long way. Save travels.
wildernessoutfitters ohh legit, you should also try swimming not like in a pool but the ocean or maybe a lake. I've been doing snorkeling for over 6yrs with the fins my legs get a great workout when I swim 100ft or more out from the beach.
Hey Dave do you mind telling your viewers how much weight you have lost recently? If you told before recently I apologize. You are really starting to slim down!
I Quit drinking and smoking a year in Oct . and started doing bushcraft and black powder events . Your videos were a big inspiration especially. those first winter months. They kept me excited and positive . Thanks for all the great videos.
Dave, this channel has become an advert channel. I would like to see a change to the old videos of things that we can use that don't come from the pathfinder store. Stop trying to sell us shit and just teach us.
I really cant think of anything inside this pack that you CAN buy at the PF Store to be honest most of this we don't even sell, I promote everyone, that is what community does! And it is all good relevant gear for hard use, I have over 1200 videos and 95% of them are educational in nature-
a lot of great knowledge in this video! Not just walking with a pack is gonna give you the strength to overcome any obstacles. Having good gear, knowing how to use it, and the physical and mental strength to keep going is key!

Really good presentation of a basic pack setup. Straightforward and honest. Nice job!

Thanks Dave for sharing

Did the GRT with my Rucker, love it!

Great advice man didn't really think about some of that gonna have to head out with my gear to do some trading like you great video man keep it up!!
Sir Dave ,can you make a video on what type of nutrients we need when we are outdoors and what type of food will give us the energy to keep going on?
Ohh another thing my Rothco large transport pack has the same amount of MOLLE as your pack. I put two of the USGI medical pouches on the front in woodland camo the square ones that take up 3 MOLLE spaces.

Great channel You should check out the spec ops brand EDC pack it is like that pack but has more features.
Your looking more fit Dave. I can tell just in the video your getting in better shape
loos like a nice versatile pack, I'm shorter so I would probably use the waist strap, wish my iLive pack had a waist belt
Dave,I see your caring a garberg knife and as a backup what looks to be a mora knife,How come you don't have one of your knives, just wandering?
I carry my knives a lot as well but wanted to promote other companies in this video as well
Awesome
thanks for the video! Good energy! cheers!
A Silky saw instead of a Bacho? Have they improved? I remember you didn't like the Silky.
Love this series it's been motivating since I need to shed a few pounds as well. Have you found yourself in an emergency situation since you've been doing your UA-cam series? Just wonderin
What happened to Rufus I have not seen him in any of the latest videos ? Hope he is ok.
Thanks Dave. To add....There is a must read book called Alaska: tales of death and survival. It is irresponsible and puts search and rescue peoples' lives at risk to go into the woods unprepared and unfit. Basic calisthenics go a long way. Save travels.
Thanks.
You must really be liking that Garberg.
So are you building muscle or trying to loose weight by doing this rucking stuff?
Both, I am doing other routines as well as just this but only filming the Trekking portion
wildernessoutfitters ohh legit, you should also try swimming not like in a pool but the ocean or maybe a lake. I've been doing snorkeling for over 6yrs with the fins my legs get a great workout when I swim 100ft or more out from the beach.
Haven't read all the comments, but I wonder if a guy could turn a ruck weight into a grill or a griddle without sacrificing a whole lot of weight
Rudy Ellenburg You could carry steel rifle armor plates. 2 would be around 15lbs and depending on the person, it might make sense for them to carry.
Before climbing up the rope tie your pack to the end of it. Then pull the pack up after you climb back up.
still looking for a pack I can attach to my crutches...
Is there a link or website we can find a pack like this ???
Where did you get the reflective straps you have on the pack?
nice pack but no tarp or something like it in it
The Hyperlight is a Hammock Tar and Bug Net in one package, guess I should have said that for those unfamiliar with Hennessy Hammocks
Great video. Makes me want to go out into the woods and hurt myself 😂
Can you link the pack
plz make a 64oz cooking pot/drink bottle kit
most definitely
I believe this is a 21L not a 26L
Hey Dave do you mind telling your viewers how much weight you have lost recently? If you told before recently I apologize. You are really starting to slim down!
O Lordy you just mentioned that you weight 208 now but weighed 225 3 weeks ago. Do you mind telling us how much was your highest weight?
I’m training for the marines and Now ima start rucking
I've gotta tell you, i see the results of your training/eating program. You look much thinner in the mid- section and more muscular on top.
Sorry Dave, I can't hear you. Love you though. I'll try next time.
This is 21L Not 26L
In my humble opinion, the weight should somehow double as a pan for cooking
Agreed ... bring along the cast iron.
Great group MED pack but, pricey.
The poor man may consider tractor weights and an Alice pack instead.
Yes I have a couple other videos with very common man options
I'm guess'in you gave up the Pall Malls :}>
3 years ago
Good for you Bro......Tobacco's a tough one to beat!!!
I Quit drinking and smoking a year in Oct . and started doing bushcraft and black powder events . Your videos were a big inspiration especially. those first winter months. They kept me excited and positive . Thanks for all the great videos.
Hardest habit that I ever broke. Harder than any other substance I abused in the past.
That's awesome. How'd you do it?
What happened to the educational videos!
There is plenty of education here if you really listen
first
