Full HD 60FPS: Two Baldwin VO1000Ms on Naval Weapons Station Earle Train with New Cast P3 and Escort

- In this video, a pair of Baldwin VO1000Ms are notched out through Middletown, bringing a 21-car train to Naval Weapons Station Earle’s main-side base in Colts Neck. These engines were originally built around the early 1950s and have been working on the Earle base for a number of years. In the present day, the only thing Baldwin about these engines is their exteriors; they were rebuilt with EMD 567C prime movers and have been mainstays at Earle for the better part of 35 years. The lead unit, 65-00367, is equipped with a Nathan P3, which was standard among Earle locomotives for many years.
The Earle trains run randomly and typically only when a ship is docked at their 2.9-mile port in Sandy Hook Bay. The trains are usually escorted to and from the pier by the US Navy Police, usually in marked vehicles but also, as in this video, with unmarked pickup trucks. I don’t know the specifics of what these trains carry, nor do I want to know. I’m perfectly content with occasionally seeing these trains to help document the long-storied history of this somewhat mysterious railroad line.

Nice. Those old Baldwin locomotives were not playing around. Getting the job done.
Very cool that these Baldwin locomotive locomotives are re-engined with EMD prime movers
When was this shot? I used to drive #9 for the navy a few years ago!
Great catch! Both locomotives are Ex frisco built in November of 52!
Very cool operation
So does this make them operating back to back or front to front?
Obviously for better visibility
The track must be in good shape to handle a train that fast. And possibly heavy, as I don't know if those boxcars are loaded or not.
This particular train was empty, but the loaded trains can be very heavy
Any idea on when you're going to film this again? Just made a replica like this train in o scale
Unfortunately, I don’t have an answer. This train runs randomly, and everything has to set up perfectly for me to see them. That’s awesome that you made a replica of this train! Do you have a video?

Nice P3. C&D 1888 has this same exact horn. BTW this is new cast not old cast. Old cast P3s sound a lot different
Thanks! I couldn’t get a good answer on what kind of horn this actually is. The consensus was it probably was an old cast, but nobody knew for sure. Thanks again for the positive identification
Lots of ammo
i thought the baldwins were long gone? i last saw them in the engine house in leonardo when i was working with an overhead crane inspection company back in the early 80's i couldve sworn i saw EMD switchers at colts neck yard when i was a SEABEE there after 911
Nope, these two Baldwins have been running all these years. If I’m not mistaken, the active roster for Earle is these two S12s (#1 and #2), one SW1200 (#4), and the two Gensets.
@@jerseyshorerailproductions i was stationed there in 2000 and the baldwins mightve been mothballed at leonardo, but i recall the engine house there being demoed
