I remember reading somewhere that SOPHIE said Faceshopping was also about how body modification and artificial changes can be just as real, valid, and as ''you'' as anything considered organic. There's no clear line separating these things, which is something that many trans people relate to, and an idea explored in Immaterial as well.
yeah it’s kind of at the intersections of transhumanism in relationship to consumer culture, beauty standards, social media, gender dysphoria, photoshop, body dysmorphia, virtual reality etc. It’s so so smart and very nuanced. It sounds like horrifying mutilation with knives and saws but also sincere blissful becoming in the middle raising to you to new spiritual euphoria. I think it expresses how lots of especially trans people feel about possible surgical transition. It’s soooo good

The phrase "I'm real when I shop my face" does things to me as someone who want to change their appearance to feel more like themselves.
i love this view, as a trans person i think plastic surgery is great as long as deep down you are doing it for you and only you. i think it gets a bad rep because of social media aspect.
This album is undoubtably a masterpiece, and I feel it really beautifully dives into the trans experience in a way that may not be initially obvious. A lot of it reads like a message Sophie wants to send to her younger self, a hand reached out to a person who is lost and scared and confused about who they are. In Oil of Every Pearls Un-Insides she opens her arms wide and says ‘there’s a place for you here’. Throughout the album she touches on so many different feelings: the anxiety, the overwhelmingness of it all, the euphoria and the bliss of being seen, of being free. It’s incredibly moving and thoughtful and powerful.
I don’t think you’re completely off, but I do think equating the lyrics of Faceshopping to just social media flattens it a little. To me, Faceshopping is a song about alchemy. Sophie puts the ‘fake’, the synthesised, the ‘man-made’ up against nature, merges them in this unholy stomping glorious song. Faceshopping asks questions about what it means to be real or fake. If the bloom is artificial, is it not still beautiful?
‘I’m real when I shop my face’ she says, implying that her real self is the one that she chooses to create. Can we transcend the barriers of nature to get closer to who we really are? Does that put us at odds with nature, or is it a part of our nature in itself?
For transgender people who have been born and raised in a way that doesn’t fit with who they really are, becoming themself often involves processes that others might consider artificial or fake. Changing their appearance, changing their voice, undergoing surgery or using makeup to bring the inner self closer to the outer perception. This links us to the initial idea you brought up of social media, and to take it a step further, to the idea of the self as a performance. Your ‘self’, your ‘brand’, your ‘shop front’ is a story you tell the world. But it’s also a story you tell yourself. And taking control of that is huge.
I feel like I could write a whole essay about the things I could read into this song, but I’ve rambled enough for now. I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts about it.
I really love this album, and your video inspired me to examine what I find so moving about it, which has also given me a new appreciation for the depths of Sophie’s lyrical and sonic work. Thank you for that!

Loved this reaction and your interpretation of the songs. Still not over her passing as she left a big mark on my and many other lives I'm sure. As for us not hearing what she had planned for her second album, I've heard rumours that it was going to be called "Transnation". You can hear a demo of the title song here on UA-cam. The album wasn't finished at the time of her passing, but there is a chance that people/collaborators who were close to her help by putting the finishing touches to the album in a way they think will support her vision. Still, there are many factors to that and it may not happen after all, but we can hope it does see the light of day, someday.

I always thought that Faceshopping is about gender dysphoria. That's why it's so unpleasant, because it expresses the pain that comes with that feelings.
It sounds more like a positive thing than that, because when you come to think of it, the biggest part of SOPHIE's transition is her face, she buys her face, and that makes her feel real.
Whether it's her social media, her social life or how the media perceives her, she pays for her transition, that's what people know, that's what she sells and makes her feel real
That’s a part of it for sure, but there’s more to the story. It’s the seed that grows the tree of problems.
So, as stated at the end of the Ponyboy section and right before Faceshopping, Sophie did a lot of little social commentaries. The commentary in Faceshopping is, from what I gather, about social media criticism of people who get cosmetic surgery. Dysphoria definitely played into the visuals, as the sort of dysmorphic exaggeration of some features and the distortion of the whole face making them pop really played into the whole feeling of dysphoric body dysmorphia, but also the unsolicited “opinions” some people have for facial surgery and their gross comments about peeling off faces and looking like a blow up doll or parody of a human as a result. The lyrics are positive and affirming because she’s all for the visual relief and, at the end, knows some of the difficulty in getting these procedures even with that music money behind her.
At least, that’s just my understanding, especially based on how a certain UA-camr was allowed (when Sophie was still around to do licensing) to use Faceshopping as an opener for a video which brings up this exact point.

For me as a non binary person i think is about the contemplation after you start to think that meaby you want to take a step in your identity and you kinda know what it is by intuition but still you are thinking what is going to be, how people will react and how yourself will be, the first seconds of taking the first hormone or the first time you are about to put a skirt or makeup *edit*(i mean is it cold in the water, i was so invested with your voice and conecting with my self that i forgot that i didn't put the name of the song lmao)

I consider this album as a testament of transition, gender transition. I dont know more trans musicians yet, just Sophie and Arca, so i could be totally wrong, but i think there is a connection of the appreciation and expression in this distorted, fragmented style, gender of music that they two represent. A freedom in music creation to break music in pieces like a collage or mosaic, and setting all the pieces in these sonically distorted ways. In new ways, new roads for trans people to make its way on society. A broken-in-shape path, from previous generations that were broken in many ways.

@@aynosekeponer This is an old comment, but underscores music deals with growing up trans in the middle of nowhere, and the kind of stuck feeling that comes with that. Her music is so amazing and if you haven't heard it yet, I highly recommend the songs "heck", "gunk", "tongue in cheek", and especially "Saltfields" which is one of my favorite songs ever. It has hyperpop influence with a but of pop-punk influence as well!!

Cecile Believe, who shared her voice for like more than 80% of this album, has a very good EP of her own called Plucking a Cherry From the Void. I highly recommend it!
I was worried about you diving into this, I didn’t know how you would take it or even if you would be able to stomach it. But it’s so great to see how willing you were to dive in so deep to the abstract and more experimental styles of dance/electronic/pop/artpop/ambient/post-industrial etc and get so much out of it for someone who is used to something more accessible! Would love to see you explore other artists with a similar ethos to music! Also love how quickly you were able to pick up on the themes and become moved by them or atleast intrigued! Keep it up! I think you’ll be able to approach almost anything now! Even if at times you won’t enjoy it, which is the same with anyone when it comes to anything lol
Glad you enjoyed the video! It's definitely much more experimental than I'm used to but I think it's important to go in with an open attitude because it's amazing what you can learn from other genres and other people's story and their art

I really enjoy how this album has several female vocalists as well as sophie's authentic voice. At first, it leaves us curious as to who is the "real" sophie singing, but that to me just adds another layer of creative thinking to the project. Hyperpop on a fundamental level is a satirisation of pop music, pushing it to its logical conclusion. Sophie having other females sing for her is in a way a method of her gender/artistic expression. Simply brilliant.
Absolutely loved this video. Seeing someone else cry out of overwhelming emotions to Immaterial was really affirming

during one of my classes, my lecturer always shows my class a music video/ a song before class and he played the music video for It’s Okay To Cry and we all discussed about it and ever since I’ve been addicted to the song and the message and the music video. SOPHIE's musicality and emotionality provide a really nuanced perspective on a range of different topics. I think this album is a concept album, trying to embody musically how being trans affected her life from an emotional perspective. It explores the battle for self acceptance and internal perception of the self, and then figuring out how to navigate and overcome external societal pressure. It's groundbreaking work, truly breaking music conventions in order to display the truth of her inner self.
okay please listen to the oil of every pearls un-inside Remix album because that really is the next chapter of her new world. if that makes sense. it's really wild and chaotic but pretty amazing using samples from the base album
On the topic of the song is it cold in the water, SOPHIE herself apparently said that it’s about her being afraid but also excited to transition from male to female. She’s afraid of what people may think or say but she’s also excited to be her most authentic self. (I’m not 100% sure if that is the meaning but that’s what I heard that SOPHIE herself said, idk if she actually did though)
if you speed up pretending a shit ton you can hear her saying something like "i was just pretending" and its really cool and i think it really adds to the meaninga of this album with the trans experience. i love this album so much and it really connects with me as a trans person.
this album means so much to me as a trans person and when sophie passed i genuinely couldnt process it because her music has helped me through so much. im a trans masc, queer, and disabled person living in texas and her music has made me feel safe despite my rights always being discussed and taken away. i miss her a lot and being able to share her music and perspective of the trans experience is really amazing and beautiful. im so happy you listened to this and got to experience it too.

I think faceshopping in particular has a sort of layered meaning when you consider that Sophie was trans. On the one hand, "my face is the front of shop, my face is the real shop front," is saying that (especially in the digital age) the artist IS the product, and to sell your music is to sell yourself. On the other, "my shop is the face I front," might be talking about how there is more to the artist than the art, the image you sell is a front. And then leading into, "I'm real when I shop my face," could be about how, yes there's more to the individual than image, but especially for a trans person, image is a form of self actualization. The artists' image becomes both a cynical product, and an expression of a deeper truth.
And then the song goes bwah bwah bwah bwah bwuh bwuh which is so true :)

Hi there Luscent! Really enjoy seeing people not at all familiar with SOPHIE, which is a lot of people honestly, finally get to feel what she is expressing. To give a personal trans perspective to this reaction, I really do see a lot of your initial reactions in some of my initial reactions still fully closeted and somewhat aware of my own existence of being hidden and hated. Like not knowing at all or connecting with anything queer I think I had some of the same initial reactions to particularly 'FACESHOPPING'. As I have grown into understanding just how much she spoke to who I am as someone still finding herself, this album genuinely might be one of the most important things in my life.
I'm sure a few others have mentioned the incredible subtext and genuinely text of being queer in society, but SOPHIE was unequivocally proud of who she was and what she could do and be. The beauty and hardship in the noises of this album are genuinely what a lot of the transformative nature of figuring out a fully repressed identity feels. It is incredibly scary and everytime I feel the fear I am beginning to learn to return to It's Okay to Cry and Is It Cold in the Water because both are the affirming and comforting centerpieces to the album. I have realized just how much of my inner motivation and voice is the fully accepting and loving voice of SOPHIE.
Very happy to see someone still able to pick up on the emotion and power of this album despite not having that experience.

He has really unique music and his voice is quite different as well, so I'm sure you'd have an opinion of some sort on his style, he has 5 different albums, Viator, Finite Form, Hilo, Pop Food, and Micropop. I would most definitely suggest listening to Pop Food or Hilo first because they are his most famous albums for sure, and Micropop after if you want to react again, but it's all up to you!

Idk if this has been said in the 2 years this video is up but the "I'm real when i shop my face" line in faceshopping is about how sophie felt struggling with gender dysphoria as a trans woman. how she only felt like the real her when she used software to manupulate how she looked and not the person she saw in the mirror.
Hey! I would like to suggest 2 singers for consideration: Alec Benjamin and Ben Platt.
My first suggestion would be Alec Benjamin, as he just released a new album last Friday and so currently his fans are very active. He has 3 albums, his first is called "Narrated for You," his second is "These Two Windows," and last Friday (Good Friday) he released his third album "(Un)Commentary." I don't think it really matters which order you listen to them in, but I personally would suggest listening to "Narrated for You" first because it is first in chronological order and then you could listen to his skill progress with each album. He has a very unique voice that is gently and sometimes people describe it as kind of childish (although I don't really understand that description) and his music is super cool. What he does is he writes stories with his music, often tying it to himself in the last verse. He is a very interesting and unique artist and I would love for you to react to him.
My other suggestion is Ben Platt. He is very well known in the theatre industry and would bring all the theatre kids to your channel. He is best known for his lead role of Evan Hansen in the Broadway musical "Dear Evan Hansen." He is an incredible singer, probably one of the best male singers there are, and currently has 2 released albums. His first album is "Sing to me Instead" and his second is "Reverie." I would suggest listening to "Sing to me Instead" first, because his albums show a lot of growth as both an artist as well as a person. I am also almost 100% sure that "Sing to me Instead" will make you cry a LOT.

Love your reactions. Here's another Norwegian that you might consider reacting to. Shortly after turning 9, this little barefooted girl arranged and performed a masterpiece cover of the Screamin' Jay Hawkins' 1956 original, "I Put a Spell on You". Although this song has been performed time and time again, many think this studio performance got closest to the original artist's intent. To further confound the issue, it also just doesn't seem rational that this is coming from a little Angelina Jordan. You may not prefer critiquing child singers, but this child prodigy is like nothing we've seen before.

Angelina Jordan is a child prodigy who: began singing at 16 months old; shows a clear preference for jazz/blues (Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Etta James, Ben E. King, and Amy Winehouse), a talent which always work its way into every performance with her vibrato and riffs; she arranges all of her music; entered Norway's Got Talent at 7 y/o, and ended up winning; has performed around the world; her parents have kept their focus on her having a normal childhood so 90% of requests and offers have been turned down. The largest performance she has sung for was for over 40,000 people, while still a preteen in Norway.
Having won Norway’s Got Talent, she was invited to compete America's Got Talent "The Champions" in 2020, at 13 y/o. She auditioned with her own arrangement of "Bohemian Rhapsody", earning herm a pass straight to the finals. By 15, she has over 160 cover performances and 5 originals. She has signed with Republic Records at 14. Her parents have still tried to preserve a normal childhood as possible for her and her little sister. Omer Bhatti: “We were in shock when she started to sing…it was a discussion whether it was an impression of that kind of music (ref to Gloomy Sunday performance) or the real deal…and the next time we saw her, she owned the stage, when she rehearsed, she told the bassist what she wanted and had full control. And we were like…ok…you are a star…we have something special here…”.
Judge Lisa Tønne: “…I am so happy that there is a human like you on earth. For me, this is not human like talent, I can’t explain it. … I’ve never ever experienced such a talent in my life.… “Don’t think. Just sing”.
Judge Mia Gundersen: “Angelina, you have a gift that you got at such an early age. And to be able to convey this talent to the world is a huge task for an 8 year old, but you nail it. You know I promised you and myself to not cry, but you hit something inside me whenever you sing, and you hit something in many people when you sing. - The Barefoot Princess of Jazz Backstory -
Angelina is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz". She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio recording. The story is that when living in the Middle East, at age 6, she came across an orphaned girl about her age sitting in the street, earning money by weighing people on a bathroom scale. She noticed how really cold it was and that the little girl was not only barefooted, but had scars on her feet. So 6 year old Angelina took off her own shoes, shoes that she loved, and gave them to the girl. Angelina decided she wouldn't wear shoes in her performances to remind her of all the children in the world who had no parents, proper clothes, or shoes. She remembers that girl every time she takes off her shoes to perform.
Of the encounter, little 6 year old Angelina wrote in her diary: “The world is very strange. Right then and there I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.” In 2015, at 9 years of age, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter (making her the youngest published author in Norway). The book and her attire Angelina wore for her AGTC audition (above) were designed by her grandmother, who was herself a child prodigy in poetry and art. She has performed in charities for children, helping to raise 21 million euros and millions of dollars.

pretending was originally a full spng with lyrics but SOPHIE felt it was too literal - a song about how her inner demons made her think she wasnt really trans and that she was just pretending - so she stretched it out into a super ambient song. if you listen to pretending suuuper sped up, you can make out the lyric "I was just pretending" stretched across almost the whole track.
