If you forget to close your mushroom vent in a seaway it will dump seawater in your solids tank through the vent and you are somewhat "hosed" so to speak. That is a big problem. Closing the mushroom vent in anything that is a beating to weather or seaway that isn't smooth *must* be on the checklist. We also add a bit of choir on top after we use the can. I found that when not doing that it was not dry enough over a month. Having two toilets (installing the second now) the plan is to use them like "A" and "B" so "A" can sit for a month or so unused after it is full to more completely desiccate/compost while we are using the other airhead. Then, literally since and repeat using freshly cleaned "A" while "B" sits.

The fan's are inadequate with the kit; I agree. I got a better12v computer cooling fan that is about 4x as powerful. The housing I got from home depot. I think it is a swimming pool part. It was about $30 or so. I found that it is faster than using the wet bag for coco coir. I have a strong knife that I brake the brick (totally dry) into leaves. It has grain to it and it will allow you to take it apart to thin 1/4" or so sheaves that you can break up into smaller chips by hand. I do this in a 5 gallon bucket and use the kitchen sink sprayer to mist them all down, mix it up and mist again and let it set and absorb. You can go to a solid brick to fine coir with no clumps in a bout an hour ish. I then just break it up by hand while watching TV or whatever. Since it is in the big 5 gallon bucket it doesn't get all over. We have 2 airheads on our catamaran. One is the house size (oval seat, larger) one is the marine size. For guys the marine size is ....um .... difficult. It is like sitting on a cheerio and trying to fit everything is a bit "fun" If you can fit it, I do recommend the home size.

Just installed my new airhead and used the Marinco Nicro 500 passive vent with the 5’ section of vendor provided hose. I like the suggestion for using the bleach solution for spraying after use. How about handi wipes? And you are right about letting the new coco brick sit for a couple of days…it broke down into a nice moist sawdust texture ready to add to the solids bucket. Used 1.5 qt. of bottle water. Nice video!

This was very helpful! I have a ridiculously small holding tank and no offshore discharge port (a previous owner must have taken it out). Needless to say I need to pump out my system every week, which is fine for now. But I would like a better alternative for the long term cruising I plan to do.

Any issues with the height of the toilet? Seems very tall, plus mounting it elevated on that little shelf. Good info in this video 👍

Hey, I just measured to make sure but the toilet unit is only about 18.5" tall and on the shelf, it's about 24" high. I'm only about 5'1" tall and it's totally fine for me (hehe). Hope this helps!

@@WayfindersNow thanks for that info. We may replace 1 head with composition head... not sure yet.
