Poking around Pelican Bay Anchorage | Wayfinders Now #37
Hey Y’all,
We begin to explore the west coast of Florida and Hope gets to do what she does best!
We're Esther and Michael, an American couple with writing and photography backgrounds. In 2017, we sold our loft in Atlanta and moved aboard a 1994 Island Packet 35 named Hope that needed some love (and boat work after sitting on the hard for over three years!).
As we learn how to become better sailors, we’re especially interested in living small to gain abundance-cultivating sustainable living habits and having more time for nature and art! And we're learning about ways to 'live small' by reducing our waste footprint on and off the boat!

Hey Y’all, Our 13-year old cat, Bowie, loves watching bird videos. She prefers birds over everything else (i.e. squirrels, mice, etc.), but we noticed that she was particularly engaged when a red cardinal appeared during a video, so Michael found a red cardinal toy (that chirps when it moves). Could you possibly expand on your single, rather general comment about the OzonaX's performance? You say only "It rows pretty nicely, too." For example, I would love to know how the dinghy rows with TWO people aboard as opposed to one (the downfall of many tenders). It would also be very helpful to me if you could compare rowing your OzonaX to rowing other dinghies and/or prams you have tried over the years. Meanwhile, thanks so much for your whole kit-building series; it's VERY well done. Best, Chris (in Maine)

    If you forget to close your mushroom vent in a seaway it will dump seawater in your solids tank through the vent and you are somewhat "hosed" so to speak. That is a big problem. Closing the mushroom vent in anything that is a beating to weather or seaway that isn't smooth *must* be on the checklist. We also add a bit of choir on top after we use the can. I found that when not doing that it was not dry enough over a month. Having two toilets (installing the second now) the plan is to use them like "A" and "B" so "A" can sit for a month or so unused after it is full to more completely desiccate/compost while we are using the other airhead. Then, literally since and repeat using freshly cleaned "A" while "B" sits.

    The fan's are inadequate with the kit; I agree. I got a better12v computer cooling fan that is about 4x as powerful. The housing I got from home depot. I think it is a swimming pool part. It was about $30 or so. I found that it is faster than using the wet bag for coco coir. I have a strong knife that I brake the brick (totally dry) into leaves. It has grain to it and it will allow you to take it apart to thin 1/4" or so sheaves that you can break up into smaller chips by hand. I do this in a 5 gallon bucket and use the kitchen sink sprayer to mist them all down, mix it up and mist again and let it set and absorb. You can go to a solid brick to fine coir with no clumps in a bout an hour ish. I then just break it up by hand while watching TV or whatever. Since it is in the big 5 gallon bucket it doesn't get all over. We have 2 airheads on our catamaran. One is the house size (oval seat, larger) one is the marine size. For guys the marine size is ....um .... difficult. It is like sitting on a cheerio and trying to fit everything is a bit "fun" If you can fit it, I do recommend the home size.

    I was told you should replace engine mounts with the boat in the water, not on the hard. Older boats are flexible so with the boat in the water and completing alignment in the water, it will remain true. Aligning the engine while on jacks will no longer be aligned once back in the water. Just parroting what the mechanic at Specialized Mechanical Services told me.

    Just installed my new airhead and used the Marinco Nicro 500 passive vent with the 5’ section of vendor provided hose. I like the suggestion for using the bleach solution for spraying after use. How about handi wipes? And you are right about letting the new coco brick sit for a couple of days…it broke down into a nice moist sawdust texture ready to add to the solids bucket. Used 1.5 qt. of bottle water. Nice video!

    im about 3/4 into this build. Trick I figured out is room temp epoxy is thick as honey but with heat gun warming up the mix, it gets nice and runny. So I put a glob of epoxy and then with the heat gun in left hand and putty spreader in my right, comes out very nice and easy.

    This was very helpful! I have a ridiculously small holding tank and no offshore discharge port (a previous owner must have taken it out). Was that low tide going under that bridge, or does tide affect you that far inland?

    • @WayfindersNow
      @WayfindersNow 3 роки тому

      Since the bridge is behind a lock, it isn't really impacted by tide. The bridge clearance depends more on Lake Okeechobee levels and whether/how much water is released by the Army Corp. The Army Corp also posts daily updates about the lake level and bridge clearance (scroll down in the grey area): w3.saj.usace.army.mil/h2o/currentLL.shtml. Did you go west on the canal? Where are you headed?

    • @WayfindersNow
      @WayfindersNow 3 роки тому

      Yes, we played around on the west coast for a while and then headed back east on the Okeechobee Water to Stuart (where we are now) because we're slated to get our chainplates replaced by Mack Yacht starting next week (was our only schedule obligation, which we'd booked about a year in advance). :) For the lake, you may already know, but the algae blooms and lake water releases were a real concern to us, we kept us with the news and there was a bad bloom at one of the locks, so we took precautions (wore disposable gloves, masks, and closed our boat up so our cat wasn't exposed).

    • @WayfindersNow
      @WayfindersNow 3 роки тому

      Oh, you'd asked about where we're headed? After getting our chainplates replaced in Stuart, we're hoping to head back to Jacksonville (our home port) for hurricane season and then head back out (Bahamas?) for next season. Right now, we're having a hard time finding a slip (even back at our old marina). Covid + impending hurricane season is making it tricky. So we'll see...

    That cheese! Trusting a mooring buoy is high winds is unnerving to any boater. We have seen 'secure' mooring buoys with boats attached give way with disastrous consequences. Glad you hear Hope made it thru the blow safely. Has the Sailrite Power Plus Flywheel proven useful?

    • @WayfindersNow
      @WayfindersNow 3 роки тому

      I know--cheese! As it turned out, the line to the mooring was pretty chafed and on its last legs, so it's so good we used a back up line and nudged them to replace their line. The Monster Wheel is definitely worth it. To be honest, we feel they should just include it with the machine (instead of the current plastic one), but we're biased since that would've saved us over $100. But yets, it's definitely worth it. The weight of it gives you more control, especially when you're using a finicky thread like Profilen. Wish we'd bought it sooner but hindsight! 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I concur with the comment suggesting the 15/16" crowfoot wrench! That coupled with a 15/16" deep well socket with some universals and LONG extensions are also very helpful. Metric gear wrenches/ratcheting wrenches in 18mm, 17 mm, 15 mm, 14mm. The other HUGE tip I used was to get a basketball and a foot air pump. Deflate the basketball, put it between the stringers under the engine and inflate it to take the load off of the motor mounts. The basketball trick saved me tons of time!!!

    DSince you removed and replaced the engine brackets, have you had any trouble with them? A mechanic friend was skeptical. I love the idea.

      Hey Steve, Yanmar mounts are a serviceable item and we replaced ours with Yanmar OEM mounts. And since swapping them out, we've noticed that the engine is less rattle-y after this swap. No trouble with them since. :)

    I am considering tackling this project on our C&C Landfall-38 as we find our Yanmar loud and it vibrates the boat like crazy. Did you find this quieted your boat or lessened vibrations while motoring?

    • @estherl8731
      @estherl8731 3 роки тому

      Yes, we noticed less rattling, but soundproofing the engine compartment quieted the boat more than anything, so much so, that our cat just sleeps while the engine is running (she was noticeably nervous before).

    Did you replace the chain plates? They are supposed to be replaced every 20 years.

    • @WayfindersNow
      @WayfindersNow 4 роки тому

      Yeah, the chainplates are a big job. We have yet to replace them, thankfully ours are well-sealed and look good(no cracks or obvious corrosion). That said, we are working on a replacement strategy now and are planning to swap in new ones. We have been in touch with Garhauer Marine and likely will be ordering 6/4 Titanium which is less expensive than it sounds, thankfully! Not looking forward to grinding out the old ones, but, glad that the undertaking is not a regular maintenance item!

    I would like to know how well this fits on the IP35. We are considering an IP either 35, 37, or 38.

      Hi Craig and Terri! The Ozona X Pram is 5 feet long, 49 inches wide, and 18 inches tall when nested, and we are currently stowing it sideways on the coachroof deck in between the companionway and the mast. To do this has required some small modifications to the mainsheet that has not been a detriment to operation. Although it fits perfectly in that space, we likely will stow it on the forward coachroof deck above the main cabin, since it is difficult for Esther to see around the dinghy when it is stowed behind the mast. We should note that we aren't using the Staysail boom that is common on the Island Packets, but, I believe that there is still room if you were to have the boom set up. It is possible to stow the pram forward and to still keep the side decks free for any work, which is important to us. We have also installed Kato Marine Bay II davits which we found for a good deal used, that we'll use when not making offshore passages which can support a dinghy up to 350 pounds. The davits are small, unobtrusive, and looks good with lines of the boat. :) Good luck with your search, Island Packet makes an incredible cruising boat and we fall in love with ours more and more each day! Let us know if you have any other questions. Also, you should check out the Island Packet forums (ipyoa.com and iphomeport.com) if you haven't already, they are a very welcoming bunch and have listings of IP's for sale.

      @@WayfindersNow Thank you. I am on iphomeport, and also the Facebook group for ipyoa. We have been on two IP's a 370 and a 350. We liked the 370, we but found the 350 to be too small. We have yet to get on a 35, 37, or 38. We were planning a trip to Florida to tour the IP factory and do a little boat shopping, but then the virus the shall remain nameless happened. We plan to start shopping in January/February next year. With plans to refit in the spring. We will be filming it also, so stay tuned. By-the-way, we just subscribed.

      @@searscr1 That's really exciting news! And of course, they're quite a few IPs in Florida. We'd toured the factory earlier this year and it was great (sadly messed up the video settings so the footage wasn't salvageable). Looking forward to hearing updates about your boat hunting and refit! If boat shopping brings you to the Jax area, please let us know!

    Thanks for the build tips. I am just starting this build from the plans, without the kit. In the process of patterning all the pieces onto standard plywood to use as a template in case I decide to build another unit some day. One of the most tedious things I have ever done, and I was in the Navy so that is saying something. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the build.

      Hey Junior, that's exciting to hear about your progress! We're really happy with how our nesting pram turned out and excited to see other examples. If you have any questions along the way, feel free to reach out anytime--wayfindersnow@gmail.com or DM us over Instagram (instagram.com/wayfinders_now). It's really daunting to think about lofting the plans onto plywood, but good on you for having those skills. We'd love to hear how it's going and thanks for reaching out!

    Do you think that the sailrite basting tape would work to create the ruffles? We use the basting tape in most of our sewing projects. The curtains looked awesome btw. We subscribed and will be following along ☺️

      Hey there! Aw, thanks for subscribing. 🙌🏾 It means a lot. I think using basting tape would definitely work. I think I shied away from it for two reasons: just trying to conserve what we have for more unwieldy projects and also sometimes it gums up the needle on our LSZ-1.
