Spooie, how many DS games did X-Play give a perfect score to, compared to PSP ones? I think maybe five or six. I only know two PSP titles getting that. I think X-Play went back and forth on the DS later on. I remember Shane Satterfield writing an article that seemed pretty critical of the DS, months after they said the DS was the best handheld at E3. But the fact that there were more DS titles getting a perfect score than PSP ones seemed to indicate a change of heart. I remember when the G4techTV merger started (keep in mind that I didn't initially have G4, just TechTV), I heard all kinds of horror stories from people on the forums about G4 having an extreme hatred for anything Nintendo. Metroid Prime 2 getting a 4 out of 5 seemed to fuel their claims even more. But if G4 had an extreme hatred for anything Nintendo like they claimed, I don't think there would have been more perfect score DS games than PSP ones, a DS Day, an Icons episode on Miyamoto, or a Pokemon Day from the recent G4 re-launch.
The staff of X-Play were self-proclaimed Nintendo fanboys, which they said back on the TechTV forums. They were strong proponents for the DS over the PSP based on what was available at E3 2004. However, I think it took a little while because game companies really learned how to use the second screen for games. Most of them just tacked on small, needless features... or put an inventory window or a map on the second screen. Anyway... This likely isn't a complete list, but from the time I was cataloging scores to when I stopped, the systems each had these... Nintendo DS 5 - Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow 5 - Mario Kart DS 5 - Meteos 5 - The World Ends With You 1 - Cake Mania 1 - Dragon Booster 1 - Tenchu: Dark Secret 1 - Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory 1 - Touch the Dead PSP 5 - God of War: Chains of Olympus 5 - Lumines 1 - Miami Vice: The Game 1 - Rengoku: Tower of Purgatory 1 - Smart Bomb
IIRC the only reason they gave the DS best in show was because they couldn't get hands on with the PSP. Pretty much everywhere else gave the PSP the award.
You forget that this was during an era in which practically everyone had written off Nintendo for all of video games. But in actuality, X-Play gave the DS a higher award than the PSP because it was the more innovative system. While the PSP was simply a portable Playstation, the DS actually allowed developers and gamers a different way to experience playing the games. No one disputes that the PSP would look nicer, but they were all for gameplay over graphics.
Can’t wait to see what advancements in gaming the “DS” will provide to us in 2005
It's a silly gimmick. The thing is gonna fail for sure.
Thank you for including the commercials! It's like a time capsule. The Levi's ad actually solicited a laugh from me!
Looks like this was taken during a November 2004 rerun due to the Halo 2 day thing approaching.
The DS Looks like a promising next gen handheld...
Take my money~

Mario vs donkey Kong for the game boy advance is an brilliant game. 😀👍🎮

Also, why the heck would an airing of Lord Of The Rings show a sneek peek to a Tony Hawk game? XD
I think at the time the LotR came out for the PS2 and PC so they maybe thought they can catch some gamers attention with that one.
The Nintendo ds kick ass. 😀👍🎮
