Hydroponic Cucumber Harvest, Grow Bag Peppers and Greenhouse Stuff

  • We worked all day in the hydroponic greenhouse harvesting cucumbers, pruning them, packaging them with shrink wrap, caring for tomatoes, and getting all of the mild peppers into hydroponic grow bags. We used a vermiculite/perlite mixture and have a bunch of bags ready to go to the high tunnel once it warms up. Katy also harvested some of the cauliflower out of the Dutch buckets. It was so good and fresh! Then I showed a newborn calf and also an update on my Desktop NFT system.

    People never stop to realize how much work there is in raising food. I had a 30,000 sq ft green house raising 8,800 bell pepper plants, 2 stems each. Once they started putting on flowers. I had a group of 4 -6 people that were dedicated solely to trimming the side shoots and setting the strings. very labor intensive. Of course when you are harvesting 750 to 1000 pounds of peppers twice a week it makes it worth while. Thanks for the video

    Hi Devon, For the dutch bucket and the growbags you use the same perlite/vermiculite mix except you mix it for the grow bags. In terms of the emitters, there is no way I can find those here in South Africa. If I was to use the tubing that would go to the emitter and then block the end and punch holes into the tublng, do you think that would work or would they block easily?
    As a pensioner I don't really want to go to the expense to try and then it doesn't work.

  • @davek9384
    @davek9384 3 роки тому

    Forgive me as I ramble through a number of topics: 1) the yellow cards - is that the "insect trap yellow sticky 3 x 5" that Crop King sells? 2) Speaking of which, your grows with the desktop NFT system inspired me to try NFT on a small scale. I purchased the desktop system from Cropking and have some lettuce and Napa cabbage started in it. 3) Count your blessings that you're close to their facility - shipping the desktop system to New Mexico was about $34! 4) I may have missed this, but have you posted any videos re pollinating cucumbers? I didn't have much luck last year and was hoping for tips. 5) Thanks for all the work you and your family put in to these videos, they're much appreciated. 6) And congrats for blasting through the 10K subscriber milestone! Well earned.
    Dave

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 роки тому

      Hey Dave! Yes the sticky cards are from CropKing. Glad to hear you are trying the desktop system. I'm having a lot of fun with mine, but wow that shipping is crazy. I know we are lucky and I can't imagine how much it'd cost to ship the supplies we need in the main greenhouse. We grow self pollinating cucumbers. The variety is called Tyria. Thank you so much. We all appreciate that :) -Devon

      @@HomegrownPassion Sonofagun - self-pollinating cukes! Didn't know there was such a thing, thanks. One general, non-hydroponic comment - can't speak for others, but I really appreciate the "farm life" portions of your videos, the walks and ATV tours, the game cameras, farm management, chores, cooking, family, etc. I am newly retired and am now in the high desert of NM, but grew up in northwestern PA, probably not all that far from your location. Brings back a lot of good memories.

    Another pointer I can tell you instead of pollinating and you can take them a little it's like a little sweat Bee you can take sip straws they like the nest in them and they're good pollinators set them in your greenhouse and you don't have to worry about pollinate like little wood bee it like a little sweat bee they are tiny bee they're good for pollination
