ARE SHOWS LIKE THIS CRUEL? Read below. I can only speak for the rats, as I don’t understand how things work for the other animals there. I was there to pick up my boys, and to meet my friends. The rats have cucumber and a water bottle on top of the show tanks, as well as food inside, and as you can see none of them are distressed. Behind the bench between the tanks and judges are four stewards. Their role is to look after the tanked rats who are taking part in the show. They stop people from disturbing rats waiting on their turn who mostly sleep and eat the treats mixed into their substrate. If a rat looks like they are upset in the tank, the steward will notify the judge and the owner. These rats are NOT FOR SALE, they are mostly owned by breeders who are encouraged to show. It is in their and the breeders best interest to acclimatize their pets to the show tank and environment. Animals who are not happy will be identified by a judge and are often no longer judged (it’s why the pet class exists). They are bred selectively for good temperament and they’re already used to people, as they are crepuscular they sleep most of the day anyway and are not left in the tanks overnight. The rabbits and the other animals on the other hand I have nothing to do with, and there was many things I saw that I was unhappy with (that I didn’t film) some were on wire mesh bases, had no hay, and seemed more nervous than the ones I filmed that seemed relaxed. As I said I have no idea how the rabbit world works, but me filming it isn’t supporting, just showing you what it's like, and many of us on the rat side discussed things we thought wasn’t okay with it. Would I show my own rats? Probably not. But these animals are only in these enclosures for a matter of hours, not weeks and months like a pet store, they're not for sale.
Thank you for posting this, I actually wanted to ask your opinion on these shows. I really don't like how these animals are kept in such small spaces, even if it's just for a day and I can just imagine how stressfull this whole situation is for them. Most small animals really don't like changes and they need some day to get use to a new place, here they are put in a new situation with people touching them all day, with unfamiliar noises and smells. I also think it's dangerous as you just can't know if any animal has any latent disease. I can totaly understand that for breeders it's important to get their animals judged, but I just really don't like the way it's done. I'm also happy to hear that behind the scenes the well beeing of the rats is taken into consideration and that they are well cared for.
I went to a pet show not long ago and most the pets seemed ok. But I did not like when the pets were distressed or out of basic needs such as food or water. I think with adequate attention to their care the shows can be ok. But besides that ur was hard to watch. Especially when people kept ignoring the signs asking not to poke your fingers in the cages.
i show my rabbit occasionally. he does not do any shows that he has to be in a cage for. I cant speak for other animals, but i can say that there are some pretty shady rabbit owners. Most of them completely disregard and ignore you if you point out that they should not be on wired floors, need a bigger cage, need hay or anything like that. they only care that they win. it is quite sad, i dont understand how anyone could do that to their animals.
After I get the courage and strength to put my decorations away I usually find small Christmassy things around the house but I am too lazy to go and put them in the loft so they usually say up until atleast July 😂🤣

Looks very different from the shows I've been to in my country, Sweden. Woodchips are basically outlawed within the mouse, hamster and rat communities (no serious breeder recommends it, neither does the clubs). Satin guinea pigs (3:34 looks satin) are banned due to the satin sickness. Wired bottom is illegal unless it's in direct contact with the ground. But there's always that one or few people at the shows that are.. questionable, to say the least. A well bred animal will not be stressed out from being showed or being in a show cage for a few hours. Sometimes we have to stay at hotels or friends houses if the shows are very far away, which means the animals will need to be able to stay in those petboxes overnight (mice, hamsters and other very small animals, rats need bigger enclosures for sure). I've showed mice three times and was a secretary at one show. Saw some things I didn't like with other breeders/keepers, but mostly just very cute and friendly animals. Any sign that the animal is unwell, has parasites or has a bad temperament is immediately disqualified upon entering. I love showing my mice, I showed for conformation/health/temperament and not so much standards. Looks aren't everything, but sadly too many breeders of all species like to pay all the attention to just looks :/ I don't see the point of showing a pet from a regular owner, I feel it's more a thing for breeders to get input on their animals so they can know what could need improving. Never been at a rat show but I know the rat community here is very very picky and dead serious when it comes to their welfare. TLDR; Shows aren't inherently bad or cruel, people are. Animal welfare is key!
I am so jealous! Hoping to visit this show next year! A friend of mine, Hamstery BBeauty, did go there so we all got pics and videos! As an ethical hobby breeder of the Syrian hamster, I can assure you that these hamsters are fine!🤗 They just sleep all day long and can nibble for food and water on cucumber as well! Even though these small wired boxes (for the Syrians, the ones on the thumbnail) are great, I’d rather have the Fauna boxes they did already use for exotic rodents. But that is only because we stuff ours with hay so they can sleep without laying in the open! I’ll compete the 8th of February with some of mine on the Topshow here in the Netherlands. Wish me luck! By the way; have fun with your new little friends!❤️
I hope you have luck at the show! I got my hamster through the SPCA, and they didn't know how old she was. She seems to be slowing down a bit, and getting just a bit grumpy. I hope I can still keep her for a while.
GERBOs........... oh those ones the judge was handling are so tame. mine can't stand being held lol. you can tell they're a very well bonded/trained pair because the second gerbil doesn't try to leave the travel cage despite the lid being off
Congratulations on your new boys! They're so cute! Could you contact the bus company to complain about the driver who drove off after looking you in the eye?
I probably would if I had ended up having to pay £50 for the next train, but I managed to get away with it, so I only lost an hour of my time. I can’t even remember what number bus it was so it’s not really worth it!
I know it’s probably not the best place to go but I got my work experience in pets at home 🥰 mainly because I’d want to see the side we don’t see to pet shops 😬 I’m so excited tho to see the rats everyday because there are 2 gorgeous girls in there but I just don’t have the space or money to buy them!
I did my work experience at pets at home too! It made me never want to buy animals there again (or apply for a job there) but I did enjoy it whilst I was there, it was very eye opening though 😬
Emiology I have sadly brought from there when I was younger (I’m 15 now) I only go in there if I really need some food for my girls because I’ve noticed not many big supermarkets sell decent small animal food😬 I’ve sworn to myself I would only adopt animals from now on unless it was completely necessary to buy one from a breeder. For example I almost adopted a Degu that had been stuck in the shelter for a while but I struggled to find him a friend so I nearly brought one. So glad I didn’t 😬
There are two specific rat types that I'd like, but don't know of anywhere to get them as far as rescues go, and would have to resort to a pet shop. Do you think it would be okay to get two boys from separate shops?
Hi PLEASE someone I need help. I know that this is not related to the video but I found out that two feeder rats I got as babies that were supposed to be two females turned out it was a male and a female. I don’t want to bring it back to the pet store just to be eaten. I’m separating their cages rn and is planning to get the male neutered. The vet said the rats need to at least be 3 months old but they are only a month old. Is it ok to keep rats separated for 2 months? Thank you for whoever that answers this. And do you guys have any idea what I can do besides bringing them back?
I'm not a rat expert, but if you are getting them neutered, it is best for them to stay away from each other for that amount of time, as I said I'm not an expert, but you mean well, I hope you have found out what you were looking for! -Crescent
Personally I do not think the majority of rat and mouse shows are cruel. I do want to show mice more in the near future when I have improved my lines but one of the reasons we selective breed is so they can handle shows like these! My mice LOVE human attention and these shows are so much fun for them. I breed these mice not just for colour but for temperament, my mice are incredibly friendly and always have been. It is not like a pet store mouse doing a show like this because they wouldn’t be able to handle it due to them having poor blood lines. The majority of the owners do really care that is why they put so much time, energy and money into these species. It takes a long time to get these lines perfect and to a show standard so it isn’t like a random person just breeds their 2 random mice/rats once and they get first place because that isn’t how it works 😂 I can only speak for mice and rats as I have never owned anything else 😂
My 2 rats are from a pet shop. I know I shouldn't have and rescue or breeder is how people should get animals. But both my rats are not scared of humans atall and will happily come out and play with loads of friends in my house. Not all pet shop rats are scared. Depends how much time and effort you put in
They can eat most things as small treats I've fed my rat pork rib meat when they were feeling ill but their main food should always be their rat diet/ lab block
Hi! I love your videos, I have watched you for years now. ❤ Your rats are super cute! I keep females. :) I dont think this type of show is bad at all. When you purchase rats from reputable breeders, the rats are extremely well socialized and things like being in new environments and new smells shouldnt stress them out. Or if those things do, then those rats should not continue to be bred and sold. :)

If rats lived longer I would get one 😭 They are so cute
There are two specific rat types that I'd like, but don't know of anywhere to get them as far as rescues go, and would have to resort to a pet shop. Do you think it would be okay to get two boys from separate shops?
Aw the poor rabbits but ur rats are so CuTe!❤️
My animals do shows I have 1 4th prize 2rd prize and 2 1st prize xx
Can you do a show all my pets video on your channel? Im a fan of you!
I am getting rats at the end of the month and wanted to know what you feed your rats

• Crescent Moon • ok thank you so much!
oh wait Bradford? Do you live in Yorkshire Emiology? only ever been to Leeds and York lol
I can’t believe the bust driver did that to you :(
Personally I do not think the majority of rat and mouse shows are cruel.
Depends how much time and effort you put in
What a shitty bus driver haha :-)
Sorry to hear about that lol.

Can you buy animals from here or did u arrange with the breeder and meet there?
I am getting rats at the end of the month and wanted to know if they could eat pork?
They can eat most things as small treats I've fed my rat pork rib meat when they were feeling ill but their main food should always be their rat diet/ lab block
OMG THERE SO NICE!! By the way your not a awkward human being.
This video came up in my recommendations and i thought it said 10 minutes ago lmaoooo and j was like wheres the mask 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
Hi! I love your videos, I have watched you for years now. ❤ Your rats are super cute! I keep females. :)
I dont think this type of show is bad at all. When you purchase rats from reputable breeders, the rats are extremely well socialized and things like being in new environments and new smells shouldnt stress them out. Or if those things do, then those rats should not continue to be bred and sold. :)
Adorable boys
2:32 he was peeing 😂
Lovely animals
I'm considering getting some rats myself, but I do not have a lot of rat breeders in my area. Is that bad?
The right rats are worth travelling for ☺️
