Thank you for all your words of encouragement 💗 Also please trust that I know the difference between ‘establishing dominance’ and hormonal aggression. If a rat has too much testosterone and is experiencing increased aggression because of this it’s a medical condition that needs treating like any other, and will continue causing issues within a group no matter what way shape or method you try. Please know that I’m not making the decision to neuter him lightly, and that in the last two weeks I’ve tried everything possible to get him to live happily with the other boys, with the guidance of experienced breeders, we’ve gone back and forth too many times back into the carrier, the rats have had enough, and I can’t continue getting no sleep for two weeks because they’re squealing all night. As I mentioned in the video I stopped filming when things started getting bad and his aggression towards everyone got worse as it wasn’t something I felt like filming and wanted to focus on them, so you’re only able to see very limited short clips of the start of it all. I appreciate all of your tips but at this point having tried them all already, there’s only really one thing to do from here on that will be in the best interest of all of them ☺️ I encourage anyone who’s in a similar situation to considering neutering / spaying as an option, again not something I would be doing unless absolutely necessary so please trust me on that one!

Have you thought about a behavioral implant? It's something we have used with our boys to great success.
It's a lot less intrusive, and is a ten minute procedure. Still takes 6 weeks to kick in, but we have had aggressive boys turn into right softies afterwards.
And good luck, it can be really tough when it goes wrong.

@@writingratty can you tell me more about that? Is it common? What's it called, brand name? I have 4 boys total with 2 alpha boys. One is over 2 years old. I would like to house them together, but can't trust the alphas.

You know your animals best, Emi. Nobody else was in the room to see how things went down and I think you've had these guys long enough to be able tell what's a problem and what isn't. I can't believe anyone would say otherwise, honestly.

Emiology Neutering male rats due to aggressive behavior is not at all unusual, so please don’t feel you have to explain or apologize! It is actually much better for the rats because it allows them to “chill out” and establish close relationships with their male companions, and this bonding gives the formerly-aggressive male a much better quality of life. After all, the “equipment” causing the aggression is the drive to be the strongest male in order to mate with more females, but these male rats are not going to be with females, so all that energy and drive is turned onto their cage mates. I work with a rescue organization, and one of the more common surgeries (besides spaying females) that we have done before adoptions or recommend to folks after adoptions is neutering aggressive males. So many male rats are relinquished for being “unmanageable” or “bullies,” but once neutered they make wonderful pets and can even often be integrated with other previously-aggressive neutered males, and seem so much happier for having buddies. And honestly, is it kinder to keep a male rat “intact” with all that hormonal drive and no relief? We don’t think anything about advising people to spay and neuter their dogs and cats, and rats who will never mate should have the same relief from constant arousal and the unfortunate behavioral issues that follow. (Just my opinion, of course!)

Tldr: super aggressive and territorial older boy?introduce in the bathtub with vanilla essence for a couple of weeks then take rats to someone else’s house and put them in a small cage together overnight then in a brand new or thoroughly cleaned cage back home
I’ve just introduced my very difficult territorial boy to my new babies (it took a month all up). They’re finally together and happily getting along. The older male was already neutered and still aggressive. I started in neutral territory in the same room as their cage. Bad attacks from the older male. Swapped to the bathtub with vanilla essence on both boys, introduced one at a time. The first baby was very scared of the older male at first for a few days. Each session was like 10-20, mins. After a couple of weeks in the tub every day they were getting along well in the tub. But still the older male was very aggressive in the same room as the cage. So I took them to my mate’s house and introduced them in total neutral territory with vanilla essence. They went straight In the same cage with only water and food added after a few hours. Slept the night there and put them in a brand new cage when we came back home. Not one fight, only slight tussles. Really would recommend this for anyone with a verrrry territorial rat like mine.

Thank you so much for making this video! I am currently in the midst of a pretty difficult introduction, and every time I have attempted to look to UA-cam videos to try to navigate the situation, I seem to only find videos of extremely chill, smooth rat introductions. It's really helpful to see videos that show more difficult cases, since not only does it help me feel like I'm not alone, but it's also helpful to learn how others are handling their difficult intros. Seeing only easy, successful intros on UA-cam thus far has made me feel jealous and confused why mine haven't been as successful! I appreciate this real, honest content very much :) looking forward to seeing how things unfold!

I have a rat that had to be neutered. He was so amped up on hormones that he was ALWAYS nervous and antsy.
It took 2 MONTHS for his hormones to settle down. I tried around 6 weeks and he was still attacking my alpha. I waited 2 more weeks and he's not only living peacefully with everyone but he's also happier in general.
Getting him neutered was the right choice.
*Edited to add: I tried EVERYTHING. Bathtub, in a blocked off hallway, carrier, vanilla ... Nothing worked. He was just aggressive towards other rats.

reminds me a bit of my rats. Was busy introducing them they were in the first half of the big cage, when one of my older rats got a bladder infection. and because of the pain he lashed out at one of the babys wich caused a wound that needed stitches. So while waiting for the vet i put the babys in a seperate cage. but putting them back after one day didnt go to well. because the wounded one was very afraid. So i also need to begin again in a little while.
Tried to wait till the bladder infection was gone, but with bladder dust, a bad appetite, weight los and no energy i think after a lot of struggle its time to let him go (the vet thinks his kidneys have taken to much damage)

They are pretty small,no bigger than my hand so right now I just have their two separate cages close together so my older girls can sniff and get used to the babies more. They puff up sometimes but I think they are beginning to accept eachother more. Lol I'm not going to do the carrier method though until the babies get larger. I'm scared that my older girls could snap and seriously hurt them since the babies dont know any better. But anyways,I think you could get more little ones but just make sure you have a separate temporary cage to keep them in for a bit. ^^"

this is unfortunately pretty common with rats that are houses in the same room and nearby or split cages, ive had so many awful introductions because my rats were kept in the same space where they could smell/ see/hear one another but couldnt do anything about it, which caused pent up territorial issues (including my neutered boys) so i now keep new rats in a seperate room until theyre ready to be introduced and it works much better for me :) hope that helps!

Yep, sometimes thats the case. The younger boys were kept downstairs for as long as possible but unfortunately i don't physically have the luxury of a separate room I can use to keep them in, it usually works fine because I can intro as soon I get them but Crumbles neuter being delayed really threw a spanner in the works

Oh gosh, I’m so sorry to hear this emi!! That sounds horrible, you and your poor boys must all be so stressed! Maybe after humbug has been neutered, would you consider introducing them in pairs? Like Wispa and Crumble / Humbug and Twix, then switch, before trying again as a group? It might be a tiny bit easier if there are less established “teams” and they’re all familiar with each other. Best of luck with everything, I hope humbug is ok!!

This sounds Exactly like my introduction with my four boys 😂
    . Hot
    . Stressful
    . Terrifying
My pet shop rat did the EXACT same as crumble and I waited like 2 days and then put them into the carrier but only with the 2 least agressive and the most agressive older rat. Thankfully it went well

I have a boy with some possible aggression issues living with his 2 brothers and this video and your other intro videos are providing some insight into things I will have to take into consideration when I plan on adding 3 babies to the mix. I've owned rats for over 10 years but intros always kind of get me anxious even still.

I’m about to introduce my two new babies into my big girl cage. I’m so nervous. They’ve been introduced to my three older ladies and all is well for the most part. Two of my rats are definitely “food aggressive” whenever treats are involved. Even though everyone gets the same amount of the same thing.

  • @lilacaes

I got 2 new rats almost a year ago, and I still havent been able to get a successful introduction because my one girl Penelope keeps starting fights for no reason. I would introduce them in the tub, and ive tried spreading treats around, putting some vanilla extract on them.....nothing has worked so I essentially gave up bc im so terrified of the sounds of them fighting omg. So they now share a double critter nation, but its blocked off so they cant get to each other :( I super wish they wouldve gotten along bc I think it couldve helped the 2 newer rats since theyre so skittish and scared of me but :/ sometimes rats dont get along, it b like that sometimes

hi, i have a question and if you have the time to answer that would be great! my rat currently has to take a pill 2x a day. i have been giving it to her with peanut butter but she has gotten tired of it. i went to pick up the ferret paste you talk about but my pet store didn’t have that one. i picked on a Furo-vite ferret vitamin supplement. it seems pretty similar but i was wondering if you think it is ok to use?

I feel your pain, 3 out of our 5 boys had to be neutered 😖 and now one of the neutered boys is starting to show aggression 😩😩 (he’s around 18 months and was neutered over 6 months ago, they’ve been living together as a group of 5 for a couple of months after successful intros) If anyone has any experience / ideas how to handle aggression after neutering this would be appreciated 😅

It was like this for all of my ratties when they first started interacting. I didnt get much sleep the first week or two trying to make sure I kept doing this method and confusing everyone's scents with food etc. Its hard but itll get better! They're establishing dominance and roles among eachother. 🖤
