My rats and one of my dogs would play with each other 😂 ONLY through the cage, I never let them together outside the cage but they would chase each other back and fourth it was adorable :)
"Do rats bite?" - I just have to add that sometimes they (gently?) bite your fingers when they think it's food/smell food on them... At least mine do and always kinda seize for a moment there after and then gently lick and groom that same finger as they'd like want to say "omg sorry, my bad oops..." and I always just find it so cute
I google questions like these all the time and sometimes I know the answer, it is always really scary when the answer I get is not correct!! This video is a great help❤🐀
My babies sleep during the day and come out at night. I was thinking it’s just them and their weird little ways. I had them in my bedroom before for a few nights, they kept me awake all night 😂😂
My poor chubby boy got stuck between the rungs on a toy ladder a few weeks ago. Obviously I didn't hesitate to grab him to help. He was so scared that I did actually get my first proper rat bite. It's crazy how powerful their jaws and teeth are!

Hey emiology! Today I got my two male baby dumbo rats. They are the most precious things I've every seen. Any starter tips? These see my first rats but I've been researching for 4 years on and off haha
We used to put our rats cage next to the window, and one day when we moved their cage to clean them, we saw a HUGE hole in the curtain! The had pulled the curtain into the cage and started chewing it despite the fact they had multiple things to chew in their cage 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️😅😅
My rats are like nail clippers. At one point I had long nail I stuck my fingers in there cage and when I took my finger out I couldn’t even see where the white bit was
“Why do rats have tails?” Me why do dogs have tails? Lol😂😂 I love your content Emi!!! I’m getting rats and you are helping to know what to do and what not to do thank you!!!!
I have the ferplast furat cage for my two rats, and its loaded with toys but my rats still chew on the bottom of the cage. Does anyone know how i can help this?
If they’re chewing the bottom of the cage they might be doing it out of boredom / frustration or because they want out. I’d recommend getting them a bigger metal cage that they can’t chew and escape from
is it ok to buy rats from the pet shop? I’m only asking because i’m a teenager and my parents won’t go to a rat breeder. I have two male rats and i was thinking of getting more.
I love my rats tails so much 😂🤣😅 they are really soft and the colour scheme of their skin is interesting especially on a tail...idk I might be gross lol

My girls used to bite when I first got them because I got them from a rescue and the were stressed. After a week or 2 of getting them to trust me they became sweethearts❤️
I have a very old rescue rat that was given away after his housemate and he were attacked by dogs so one day I was playing with him and I set him off and he REALLY bit me, of course, I didn't blame him and still have him to this day even though he isn't doing that well now.
Help I need advice!!! I had several oops litters over night I was giving a baby " girl" who turned out to be a boy and several of my rats had babies one doesn't want to care for her babies my other two who Also had a litter took them in but there both caring for 16 will these babies survive????
It should be fine, some rats alone have litters that big. Theres a chance not all of them will survive but that’s something that could happen anyway even if the mother rat hasn’t rejected them. Try not to stress the other two too much, I recommend talking to breeders in your area who may be able to help with rearing them if your girls decide not to
I have 8 week old males. They do bite me. I sometimes pet them through the cage because Im still working on bonding. And they go after my fingers and bite. Not sure if its from fear or not?
At that age it's most likely fear if they're biting hard, if it's just little nibbles when your fingers are in front of your face thats how young rats navigate the world and they should grow out of it
@@Emiology They are biting fairly hard. Also I just found out that they only just turned 7 weeks old today. She gave them to me when they were only about 5 weeks old because she thought they were 7 weeks at that time. But they do sometimes do light nibbles and other times usually when Im putting my fingers through the cage to oet them, they bite.
Does anybody have any tips on how to socialize a skittish rat? One of my girls is fine with me picking her up and being petted and the other one won’t even take treats from me
My two girls used to be the same, and the only solution is to just keep at it - keep hand socialising by maybe feeding her a treat balanced on the tip of your finger or perhaps try liquid treats such as meat baby food. In time, she might learn from her confident sister :D
I only have guinea pigs however I would suggest not giving them eye contact and finding what there favourite food is and just try getting them to eat the food while you are near their cage. Hope this helps (:
I have 2 skittish rats at the moment and I've had them for probably 4 or 5 weeks. They've come a long way, but still run any time I try to pet them. I take them out for play time 2 times a day (more is better, but do what you can. 1 time a day, or maybe 2 or 3 times on days that allow). I would only feed them during play time, which required them coming up to me and I would give them food from my hand (obviously this meant I had to be strict about taking them out multiple times a day). If there was a day I knew I wouldn't be able to do this, I would feed them in the cage. This also allowed THEM a break from being forced to interact with me. After a couple weeks of that, I would feed them meat baby food on a spoon. This forces them to not run and hide to eat. After I was comfortable that they would lick the food and not bite it, I would spread the baby food on my hand to have them lick it off. During the same play session, I would also switch to feeding them their kibble from my hand. After a few days of this, I started trying to pet them while they licked the baby food. They would run off at first, but eventually they would let me pet them while they ate. Then I started picking them up while they licked the food. Again, they ran off when I would try this, but eventually they allowed me to pick them up. (pick them up and set them right back down, gradually increasing the length that you hold them as they become more confident) They will play on me and climb up me, but they still don't allow me to pet or hold them without food being involved. Like I said, it's been about 5 weeks of this and they're still not comfortable with me completely. They're about to be introduced to the rest of my SUPER confident rats, and I expect this to help tremendously with their fear of me.
My Perfect Mischief The issue is, she won’t even come up to me making it impossible for me to get her out of the cage. I think it would be easier to bond with her but if she won’t stop running and hiding, I can’t get her out of the cage
@@avery4643 That does make it hard. Usually when I first get a rat, I don't give them a lot of hiding places in their cage. It kind of forces them to become familiar with their environment. I would recommend making the cage pretty bare, maybe some hammocks and chew toys and ropes to climb, but no tunnels or boxes. It will make it easier getting her out of the cage, too. She'll run from you, but you'll have to be fast at snatching her up (I don't have much confidence with this, so this is difficult for me to do). Then you can put her in a carrier and take her to a play area with her sister. You don't have to interact with her at first, and she'll probably hide in a corner somewhere, but eventually she'll start to explore, especially if her sister is exploring too (this might take several play sessions). Let her walk up to you without you trying to touch her. You can also occasionally put her on your shoulder throughout the day and walk around the house. This forces her to spend time with you and become familiar with your scent. Don't stand still for too long because that gives her opportunity to find somewhere to jump to, so make sure you keep moving. Wear junk clothes or something that you don't mind getting peed and pooped on, as fear poops are common.
Great video! Answered two of my unsure questions. Got my little ones on Tuesday, one is PEW, and shes been grabbing my finger regularly, I wondered if it was aggression, or just poor eye-sight which now I know it is! Thanks!!! Overall, this was a great video! Other questions Ive been googling and having trouble getting answers.... Is Christmas Cactus OK for rats (mine keep going for it) and also Peperomia?
if i have cats am i still able to get rats. i would obviously take precautions and make sure there was no way of my cats getting them and when i would take the rats out to play i would close my door but im scared my cats will stress it out by bugging it. i could never let my cats in my room or somehow make space for a rat room im just not sure and google or some youtube doesn’t seem to actually answer.
one of the questions was do rats need wheels... do they? also, will they chew through a plastic cage because i’ve seen some places say the cages need to be metal, but some places say they can be plastic!!
Plastic cage bases are usually fine, but it'll depend on your rats. Mine were fine for months then decided to chew through the base and explore my apartment. They missed their sister who had to be moved to a nursery after having babies unexpectedly. They're fine now that they're back together though! As for wheels, males will usually use them less if they use them at all, but females are likely to use one. If you give them a lot of free roam time, they don't have to have one but still might enjoy it. Just make sure it's the appropriate size.
hi! i just got new rats and they are a little shy. i got them from a breeder but they aren't used to me yet. can you make a video about how to socialize and bond with your rats?
ive seen people using puppy pads to line the bottom of their cages as it absorbs it and doesnt cause ammonia build up. is this a better alternative to fleece if your cage is too awkward for proper bedding(besides the litter box)
Some people use this underneath fleece but rats are chewers and will probably chew up and move the pads around. It’s important for them to have a bedding they can dig around in and forage so they can express natural behaviours ☺️
I good bedding for rat which I recommend is paper pellets or if you want to use fleece lining is you do have to wash it every 2-3 but fleece is good for cages with shallow bedding pans
I don’t recommend fleece at all. Loose beddings like aspen, hemp or shredded cardboard in the main part of the cage and paper bedding like back 2 nature in litter trays ☺️
Emiology the only thing I use fleece for is the shelves in my cage because there not deep enough for loose bedding but at the bottom of my cage Iv got paper pellets and a dig box is that ok?
I can only have "small, quiet pets" where I live. No barking dogs, etc. I'm not really a cat person and my apartment is fairly small, so I am researching rats. I have been on a Google and UA-cam frenzy tonight. Thanks for the informative channel. I subscribed just now.
should i get salt licks for my future rats? do they really need them because i mostly shop for rat stuff on amazon but i cant find any salt licks with reviews about rats but i dont buy anything like that without confirmation that its ok for the ratties.
I think I googled 30 times my Rat has pneumonia ( 3 weeks of X-ray.. lungs cleared, last X-ray was left lung issue) have her on baytril and doxycycline and it’s not working... Started her on Gentamicin... too late ... I had to put her to sleep Thur.. been crying for three days now... Should diagnosed with pneumonia... have her on Gentamicin first? Future knowledge..
you can train rats to detect certain deseases in humans with their sense of smell or find landsmines (the upside of this is that rats learn much faster than dogs and if the dog sits on the mine it can blow up while it wont will when a rat sits on it), so saying they have a good sense of smell is a hard understatement
Any tips for skittish rats? I have two girls who both will let me pet them but only in the cage and will both take treats from me but when I try pick one of them up she squeaks really loud which is really daunting so I’ve stopped trying to pick her up for now, the other one will tolerate me picking her up but will get out my hands at any given chance
Not really, it’s really important for rats to be able to exhibit their natural behaviour of digging and foraging and they can’t do that with fleece. Some people use fleece but I’d never recommend it, you also have to change it really often to prevent ammonia
"Most of the time a rat is probably licking you because your hands taste nice or your hands are salty." I'd be concerned for my well-being if my hands taste nice.
I have heard people taming wild mice around the house and I wonder if it’s safe to and if so(plz answer this too if you can) when tamed and bonded should I let it live on it’s own and hangout with it later
No, it's not. The mice that Emi owns are domesticated and bred to be pets. Keeping wild mice as pets will really stress out the mice and ruin their quality of life because they are used to living without cages and in large groups. They might also carry diseases. Your best bet is to do your research and get pet (fancy) mice.
I assume the reason some people might wonder whether rats have bones it’s because they’re able to fit through such small spaces and are generally really flexible.
I understand that most people would think that mice and rats don't get along but I have owned both for a lot of years and I have some mice that are housed with rats and they get along amazingly! One of my female rats even raised some baby mice as if they were her own. I am very experienced and well educated on rats and mice. They have never faught and none of my mice have ever been harmed by the rats. In one enclosure I have 4 rats and 5 mice and they get along so well, they just absolutely adore each other. But that's just my experience. 😊💖
There’s many other reasons I wouldn’t keep them together such as the cage size requirements / risk of rats living in taller cages mice could fall in and also the slightly different nutritional needs you’d have to accommodate for but I’d be interested to see how you do that!
@@Emiology thanks for your reply! As I said I've owned mice and rats for many years so my life basically revolves around them and I just have to work around them. My mice and rats have always just gotten along without me needing to interfere or do anything like that. It started when I was free roaming the rats in my room and one of my mice Bobby who was a baby at the time, he's nearly 4 now(that's really old for a mouse), was on my shoulder because he just always wants to be around me and so I decided to let him down onto the ground with the rats and Bobby was very interested in them but they didn't really even notice him, well they knew he was there but they didn't really care. From then on my rats and mice have been living in harmony together. I feed my rats and mice the same nutritious diet and they absolutely thrive off it, their costs are all really healthy, they are a good weight, they have plenty of energy especially some of the older ones that still like to climb and play and run around! I just love them all so much!😊💜💜

Hi! I just wanted to ask you if you could do a video where you cut your rats nails. My rats nails are getting long, but I’m quite scared of cutting them. Can you give any advice? Or could you maybe cut their nails/explain how to in a video? Thank you Emi! Your channel has helped me a lot!
Yes you can. Although it’s still a risky surgery, neutering the Male is less invasive. Some people will tell you not to neuter for convenience and put them through it just to house the two sexes. Also you’d need multiple rats ideally as it takes a while for them to recover before they can be introduced, the Male can’t be alone during that and neither can the female
I think the confusion with the bladder is that rats do not have gal bladders and this makes the confusion that they don't have bladders. Just a thought :)
in sweden they found a rat in a home who was 40 cm (15,45 inches) long without her tail, would it be possible in the near future to breed domestic rats of this size or greater and do you think they would life longer?
“Rats have tails because they have tails.”

if i have cats am i still able to get rats. i would obviously take precautions and make sure there was no way of my cats getting them and when i would take the rats out to play i would close my door but im scared my cats will stress it out by bugging it. i could never let my cats in my room or somehow make space for a rat room im just not sure and google or some youtube doesn’t seem to actually answer.
I have 4 adult cats and foster kittens on top of that and have had no problems. Just don't let them play together or anything.
Oh and it's okay if they're in the same room as long as you keep a close eye on them. Just close the door when you're not in the room.
Thank you Emi I enjoyed this. Funny and informative.
one of the questions was do rats need wheels... do they? also, will they chew through a plastic cage because i’ve seen some places say the cages need to be metal, but some places say they can be plastic!!
I tried this when one of my girls had babies and she just tore it to bits.
What’s the minimal size of a cage for a rat?
is there a way to bathe rats? the shop I bought mine said water isn’t good for their skin?!!
Rats shouldn’t be bathed, water is fine for their skin but it’s stressful. I have a video on it if you like ☺️
What bedding to you recommend for rats x
I good bedding for rat which I recommend is paper pellets or if you want to use fleece lining is you do have to wash it every 2-3 but fleece is good for cages with shallow bedding pans
I’m not Emiology, but I’d recommend Back2Nature because it’s dust-free, absorbent, and made from recycled paper (and I think it smells really nice 😂)
Rat-Tastic yeah I used to use back2nature on the bottom of my hamster cage
If you're not able to have dogs rats are a really good option! They can be just as affectionate as dogs :)
Emi, my room is super cold, and im getting rats soon what should i do about my cold room, do i need to cover the cage? bc of how cold my room is?
If it’s cold enough for you to survive in it it’ll be fine for the rats. Rats do better when it’s cold compared to when it’s really hot ☺️
should i get salt licks for my future rats? do they really need them because i mostly shop for rat stuff on amazon but i cant find any salt licks with reviews about rats but i dont buy anything like that without confirmation that its ok for the ratties.
They don’t need them and shouldn’t really have them
I don't normally want ads with a video but I wish I would get ads with your videos. A sort of reward for your great videos.
PICKLE RICKKKK
I think I googled 30 times my Rat has pneumonia ( 3 weeks of X-ray.. lungs cleared, last X-ray was left lung issue) have her on baytril and doxycycline and it’s not working... Started her on Gentamicin... too late ... I had to put her to sleep Thur.. been crying for three days now...
Should diagnosed with pneumonia... have her on Gentamicin first? Future knowledge..
I was waiting for this ever since you mentioned it on your live😇🥰
you can train rats to detect certain deseases in humans with their sense of smell or find landsmines (the upside of this is that rats learn much faster than dogs and if the dog sits on the mine it can blow up while it wont will when a rat sits on it), so saying they have a good sense of smell is a hard understatement
Yes two of my precious rats were trained to sniff out explosives
@@Emiology thats amazing
Any tips for skittish rats? I have two girls who both will let me pet them but only in the cage and will both take treats from me but when I try pick one of them up she squeaks really loud which is really daunting so I’ve stopped trying to pick her up for now, the other one will tolerate me picking her up but will get out my hands at any given chance
'Do rAtS hiBeRnATe' I'm lmao, great topic in your video. Hope your rats are doing well, they are adorable.
Hi! I really liked this video. I have a question though, Is it okay if I don’t give my rats any bedding in their cage and just use fleece liners?
Not really, it’s really important for rats to be able to exhibit their natural behaviour of digging and foraging and they can’t do that with fleece. Some people use fleece but I’d never recommend it, you also have to change it really often to prevent ammonia
Thank you!
No, they need to forage and tunnel. Fleece doesn’t absorb anything and will effect their health.
"Most of the time a rat is probably licking you because your hands taste nice or your hands are salty."
I'd be concerned for my well-being if my hands taste nice.
I love orbit just chilling in the background
Are they allowed apple crumble because my girlfriend keeps feeding hers apple crumble and milky tea
Richard Bentley probably not a lot of it
Can i give my rats dirt
Dawn and dusk means at sun shine and sun rise mostly
Glad to see another rat video
Im going to get rats and i was wondering when i should clean there cage every week?
Y e s r a t s h a v e b o n e s
I just love them all so much!😊💜💜
Hi emi I'm a really big fan and I am a really big fan and I want to say that I hope all your family is safe and u including your pets and I wanted some name suggestions because I am getting rats soon thank you for reading emi if u did xx

This is so great keep up the pawtastic work
My laptop is cracked almost the same way and spot 🙃
Can you do a video on good cheap (ish) rat cages for those on budgets and also one about the differences between rat genders and your preferences
I’ve already done a video on rat cages ☺️
@@Emiology oh yes, sorry I'm new and am about to get rats.
Hey! I’m really interested in getting a mouse/mice what do you recommend for minimum cage size?
This is about rats. Mice are different.
can u do this with mice
Ooo I love your laptop. What model is it and year?
It's a HP pavilion but I got it like 7-8 years ago
Orbit walking by is so cute 😫
Hi! I just wanted to ask you if you could do a video where you cut your rats nails. My rats nails are getting long, but I’m quite scared of cutting them. Can you give any advice? Or could you maybe cut their nails/explain how to in a video? Thank you Emi! Your channel has helped me a lot!
Shadow the rat has a good video on it:

That is going to be next Wednesdays video ☺️
Emiology yay! Thank you!
I’m looking to get mice, but i don’t know where to get them... do you have any website or specific breeders you’d recommend?
Wow so interesting. I love all small creatures.
Can somebody please tell me if I can keep a girl and boy rat together if the girl is spayed so that they cant get pregnant
We needed this 😂
If I'm introducing a small group of 3 mice do I still need to keep them in the temporary cage for 10 days
I went on the rat cage calculator and it says it's suitable for 15 rats I only have 2 is that okay
Yeah.. Bigger is better.
Can you do one on mice lol I have a mouse and I wonder what some of the questions people ask.♡♡♡
is all living things paper bedding 14 day odor control 25% more absorbent safe
What if there is breeder or adoption center in your state ?
I think the confusion with the bladder is that rats do not have gal bladders and this makes the confusion that they don't have bladders. Just a thought :)
in sweden they found a rat in a home who was 40 cm (15,45 inches) long without her tail, would it be possible in the near future to breed domestic rats of this size or greater and do you think they would life longer?
Some adult rats can get to about 11 inches, but Gambian pouches rats exist and they’re huge!
