I drove the Toyota version. I’m a Tesla owner and I was shocked. It feels like an EV from five years ago. There’s so many things are behind on. On a positive note, even though the things only been out a year there are some incredible values on these because they’re depreciating like rocks.
The Tesla may have the same charge time, but having 100 more miles of range means its really not competitive
Soylent Green is a movie about a super food that they said was from sea animals or some shit. Turned out it liquified humans being fed back to us. I’m worried about this sponsor, you should ask to tour their factory or at least stay away from the green flavor.
Tasty!
I was just about to thank Gjeebs for the Soylent Green ad!!
"Soylent Green is People!" - Detective Frank Thorn (The Great Charlton Heston) Yeam, this is a terrible name for a food company.
@@Mxyzptlk21 I think its a great name!
That will be the name of the meals our grand kids will get in Siberian Gulags 70 years from now if we do no stop heating the atmosphere.
Better than AG1.
@@Mxyzptlk21 LOL!!!
15:38 "It's kind of like having a wife." 😂
I just leased one for $280/mo. I was going to lease another Crosstrek, but decided to save $100/mo and try an EV. I like it a lot!
When I first heard you say "Soylent" I thought it was a spin on "Soylent Green", the food substance at the heart of a 1970's movie and novel of the same name. The Soylent drink from today probably gets its name from the contained soybean protein, but I can't believe they picked a name with such a connection to the prior sci-fi story. All the best.
Agree, such a shocking name, which i will always associate with that strange & terrifying movie.
You can buy these "used" with a couple 100 miles on them for 30K. They are an OK around-town car, but you can buy a Model Y for $399 a month. A Model Y is much more of a complete package. From $399/mo* at 0.99% APR
My Subaru solterra lease is $213 a month for 36 months with 36k miles with 0% down payment. I actually love mine, since I use our off grid solar panels it’s basically free to use locally.
What state?
Maryland
SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!
Thanks for the video. EV’s have been on the radar since 2012 and these companies won’t make a car unless they are given a deadline and target of how many they will be selling. They make more as dealers through service of crappy gas cars then evs so they will drag their feet till pigs fly without targets they have to meet. I passed on the Subaru EV and bought Ioniq 5. a truly amazing car.
That instrument cluster looks like a Play Station Portable 1000.
When you turn the car on will it play the PS1 startup jingle?
Charge speed matters for road trips. 20-80 might be 30 minutes but how much can you charge in 10-15 minutes at low SoC when other cars may be pulling in 200 kW?
It doesn't matter how fast it gets to 80%, what matters is how much range it has at 80%. In the Solterra/BZ4X, that's only about 160 miles. In the Model Y, that's almost 230 miles (With realistic range, not what the guess-o-meter says).
Exactly. I prefer to get going in 15 min.
It's the rebadged Toyota bZ4x
That’s a bold assumption you are making…just because one wheel fell off after one week’s ownership…
Or is the bz4x a rebadged Solterra 🤔
If you read back a year or so you will easily see they worked on them together . A joint project
I t is an all wheel drive Subaru that uses Toyota electrical components. So it is a joint project.
$50k+ for this flaming turd. And they’ll still lose money on it.
I just leased a 24. Limited with harman kardon. Excellent sound. Fantastic imaging. Decent subwoofer. Good frequency response.
one more point to consider for this car. the 20" tires have displayed faster than mormal wear in the BZ4X and presumably in some solterras but the weight of the car and instant torque contributes to this
The stitching of the fabric and leather on the seats reminds me of the $10 lawn chairs everyone’s parents had in the 90s
But how are the features vs a Tesla? Does it have a self driving option, sentry mode, dog mode, lojack, dashcam, camp mode, a good phone app, OTA software updates? This has nothing compared to a Tesla, other than smoother suspension.
This is priced inline with Tesla model Y performance, DOA.
It's a rebadged Toyota bz4x. I dont see Toyota putting much effort into electric for a while given how deep they're in on hybrid/phev but hopefully this vehicle line gets some love!
If for some reason you want one of these things lease it, for many reasons. The Solterra and BZ4x should sell for less than $30,000 for what they are.
Lets not forget about the recalls for supposed wheels falling off which may have been a cover for extreme battery issues and range numbers well below stated range when the car was tested, especially in the cold. IE this was for the bz4x but it is the same car.
I wish you had reviewed the adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist compared to Tesla basic Autopilot.
How come Tesla is the only normal priced car company that can make a screen that is fast and responsive? Almost every other car is laggy and slow, how can a huge company not do it at least as good as Tesla?
I agree
That is one place where some companies will go as cheap as possible , but its a terrible place to go cheap . This is 2024 , with the tech that is available right now there is no excuse to save a couple dollars on slow response screens . No excuse what so ever . At this very high price point the screen should be nearly instant in response . And if the go cheap on that , what else have they gone cheap on .
I am happy with the Solterra. The screen works fine. He admitted that the slow screen was his fault. In normal use, it is quite fast. The car is very comfortable and I can recharge in my garage. Range is long enough for my daily use. At least it has buttons for important functions. I refuse to buy a car (Tesla) that relies entirely on a screen. A Tesla screen is way more distracting than a cell phone.
Yeah, not surprising I guess given that it’s a platform mate to the Toyota. Hopefully Subaru will build their own EV and infuse not only some pure EV characteristics, but also some classic Subaru characteristics into it. That would be a great vehicle.
charging may be okay on paper but people have been having huge issues with charging their Solterras and bZ4Xs. Sub-50kW especially in the cold. I did like the bZ4X when I test drove it.
It's a good car to lease, especially if you will not road trip it. If you're looking to buy, look elsewhere. This is old tech and pretty much every other competitor has better stuff.
The review was pretty good, however i note you said you have never had wireless recharge work properly, so you don't use it. perhaps I miss heard, but I've never had a problem with it and find the feature extremely useful.
Good, even-keeled review. It’s based on the Toyota Bz4x, which is part of why it has some odd features for a Subaru (eg, the weird, Prius-like driver screen).
Is there still a limitation for fast charging for this car and the BZ4X? The initial car was programmed so that you couldn’t fast charge more than twice in a 24 hour period…
I haven't had soylent in a while. I liked the Banana one the most I think. The plain one always taste like liquid plain cheerio's. The charge curve for this car must be pretty flat which is a good thing if the peak speed isn't amazing.
Yea I was surprised the charging times were the same with such different peak charing speeds
A box that has been "styled" with little regard to its basic function or user. Its sharp angled contrasting insets have as much utility as the fake boobs that Cadillac once had on their fronts. and can't distract attention from the price tag.
This is the same one Sarah n Tuned was reviewing
You can get a new performance model 3 which as as sedan actually has more room nevermind the y and the 3 is 2.9 0-60, probably quieter, better range, better sound, fsd capable, sentry mode, dashcam, faster charging. Has a frunk, better UI, games, web browser. Solterra has horrible range loss in winter. Already determined with the bz4x which is the SAME EXACT CAR. Charging speed on this is horrible for traveling. That is why in china they can't sell the bz4x with $15,000 dollar reductions. This car and the bz4x is a flop. Don't even consider it unless it is 25k.
Nailed it
$50k is not smart in the market we are in right now . Can you even fit 4 full size adults in that cramped space ?
I was talking to a sales manager at a Subaru dealership about these. He said he cringes whenever they get these. They hate them too and they can’t move them off the lot.
@badugiboybimmer9232 I think where we’ll see EVs stick around in the longer term will be in the more urban, coastal regions with less volatile weather. I don’t see people in the Midwest that have adopted EVs rebuying them simply because of the limited range in poor weather which we get half the year, longer distance traveling via the highway vs flying, and the additional planning required for long distance travel, yeah, you can get away with all that, but do you want to?
I have an EV and, while it isnt bad to travel with, I’ll only do in good weather from now on. I do like it, but my next car likely wont be another EV.
70s’ inspired rear vents
An EV without a frunk in 2024 is crazy
I’m totally disappointed!
Had no idea Subaru was entering the EV market.
Anybody saw the Charlton Heston 1973 movie Soylent green? 😮. My brother in law just got a Toyota BZ4x ( same car) and he loved it. I’m waiting for the 2025 Tesla model YLR to replace my 2020 MYP cause I have FSD.
Appreciate the dictionary 6:19
I've driven a lot of EVs still nothing compares to a Tesla
That steering wheel is the same shape as the late 50s-early 60s Chryslers my grandfather drove. - Gen Z
First somewhat posotive review I've seen on this or the Toyota variant...
All they had to do is put a 100 kWh battery in this for it to move. Toyota and Subaru like shooting themselves in the foot with this sort of thing lately. Also Toyota not building a fully EV Prius seems like a fumble to me.
The demand for EV’s has fallen off considerably the last few months, and hybrids sell way, way better than EV’s do
@@blakestebbe7937 Toyota and Subaru can put higher capacity batteries in the BZ4X and Solterra, make an electric Prius when they already make a PHEV version, and still push hybrids to most of the market. Do you in your galaxy brain think Toyota and Subaru have that limited amount of resources that they can't do both? This isn't even about EV's, this is about making better vehicles.
He’s right , the market right now is hybrids . It’s all about making as much money as possible and hybrids is where its at and Toyota knows that very well
Soylent Green Gjeebs! It's People!!!!!!!!!
What is the real world range of this vehicle? 222 miles is not very acceptable but maybe it’s not overstating the range like Tesla.
This title makes me feel the way I did when I realized 7-ELEVEn is spelled just like that…
its just bz4x under different skin, don't expect too much
Dude, soy based protein? Seriously? I would think someone like you would not go for soy 🤣
He’s testing a Soyterra…
@@FrunkensteinVonZipperneck 😂 that’s funny, i mean Soy products go well with Subaru 🤣
Is he not aware that this is just a BZ4X with Subaru badges?
Yep , one and the same . Toyota and Subaru worked together on this project . Joint effort
This looks like a 38K vehicle as spec’d, just no where near what they are asking.
I had a similar situation. A chick once gave me something for a week. It wasn't a great experience.
That Soylent Green crap you’re hawking tastes terrible. Maybe it’s the rotting corpses they used for flavor…🤣🤢
I'll stick to my Tesla plan!
This car is beyond FUGLY inside and out! I wouldn't drive it if it were free. I mean, it's almost like they were deliberately trying to make this thing ugly. The Pontiac Aztek lives again!
I don’t understand all the apologists for Legacy auto. Oh they need time to do it cheaply. Oh the govt is forcing them to do it too fast. EVs are not ready for prime time and they’re too expensive. Well the govt is trying to get Big auto to play catch-up, as China is going to be eating our lunch. The rest of the world outside of the Oil belt don’t want to be beholden to Big oil anymore, don’t want the pollution anymore and don’t want to be spending their nation budgets to make Exxon and BP execs rich while their countries stay in poverty. That is why China will dominate!
Toyota built compliance car!😅
wonder how much they are losing on that, probably less than ford 132k loss per vehicle
What a name .... why .... why ... would you buy this and not a Tesla .... I am on my 4th Forester !
Toyota better take notice. The model Y is far better in almost every way and is cheaper.
People who like Toyota they don’t care about Tesla. Tesla can’t even sell cars at this moment
@@amrindersingh3949 the most traded in cars for Teslas are... Toyotas.
😂 what a joke , revisit it in 2 years, will be able to pick it up for $2999.
Gee, my wireless charging in my '21 Model Y has always worked great!
I got spoiled by Tesla with the frunk… Can’t look at EV the same way without a frunk…and they want 50k for it.. just doesn’t make sense to buy anything else but Tesla
It’s hard to compete with the Model Y.
Horrible EV. Mine is gone, thank goodness, terrible charging and only 62 kWh of that battery is usable. Try DCFC above 50% SOC and it charges at 16 kW, yes 16 KW! Cold weather it’s a terrible road tripper,, 2 hours to charge at a 200 kW charger. I do not know anyone who has ever got 100 KWh DCFC either. Avoid this car. No illuminated window switches either. Nav does do any charging or trip planning. It’s the worst I have experienced and it costs $15 per month.
Please explain how any lease is a deal!?! How does losing 6K for 2 years help? Guess if you bought the value would go down.. Can you buy it out if you want?
It is a repackaged Toyota bz4x piece of crap, right?
Toyota and Subaru worked together on them . Joint project . So, yes
See, EV's suck, so now that you are at our dealers, check out this ICE car......
It looks like a dated gas car....eye roll.
No thanks.
I usually do not mind looks and design, but Nissan, Toyota and Subaru currently make the ugliest cars i've seen in a liong time.
That's one ugly mug. Subaru wants $54k for this thing?! Any sane person would be buying the Tesla Model Y Performance.
NOBODY will buy that, why would they, the range and price suck!
Do they know what kinda of market we live in right now ? I think not . Way over priced for a Tiny electric car with very poor range
Sorry/ but just a huge billboard showing the world the owner of this car has no idea about cars. Just a total b.s. waste of money.
Things to love about EVs:
1. Child battery labor
2. Range anxiety
3. Risk of garage fires
4. Paying 20k more than a comparable vehicle
5. Battery degredation
6. Poor resale value
7. Reduced performance in cold, highway
8. Higher repair costs
9. Awful charging network experiences in the weather without restrooms
10. Higher insurance rates
11. Replacing tires more frequently
But hey theres a tax credit!
Made by BYD CHINA
Yes, I forgot about that. Now that I saw a video about byd "chopstick axles" and suspension breaking all over I wonder if this is the reason for the wheels falling off scare or was that in fact the lugnuts and studs and not the suspension parts.
Not. You're thinking of the bZ3.
@@default7950
BYD makes the Toyota BZ4X
BYD makes the Subaru Solterra
These are the same car (SUV).
Bad name , its also a Toyota 🤔 it's already a decade behind in design, buy a Tesla you won't regret it.
Ridiculous sponsors name ,total fail , liquid humans, really amazing fail.
This is the worst car! And the drivers screen is so stupid!
Unfortunately this is ugly
Nope. Thanks for the review.
Ew
THAT IS ONE UGLY CAR....
I'm a huge Subaru fan, but this car is terrible. Why Subaru,, Why?
It’s not even a Subaru, it’s a thinly veiled Toyota. All subie did was slap their badges on it
Hard pass.
I have been watching your videos and like them but I wonder if this video was even worth making for you based on views for all of your time and trouble. This car has already been well known as an overpriced flop and is old news. Maybe not worth making this video.
Shows the contrast of what infant companies like Tesla and Rivian can produce, versus legacy automaker Titans.
Well, the rich lesbians that are eco conscious may like this car.
There's probably like 10,000 of those in all of America
All Japanese EVs are terrible.
Nissan Ariya is the exception.
Subaru got stupid . Subaru should have made a hybrid . The Subaru AWD system eats up power.
Yikes, this reviewer was bad.
Subaru’s trying hard to give away the vehicle. Finance at 0% APR for 72 months or lease for 330/mo with nothing down
At $330/mo it practically pays for itself in fuel cost savings…
