The true origin of Kente can be traced back to the people of Agotime Kpetoe. The cloth is traditionally known as Ke-te, which means "open and close," reflecting the process of its creation. The Ashantis took the cloth and the Ewes' craftsmen during a war between the two groups in 1869. The rivalry between the Ewes and the Ashantis led to the saying "wokum apim- Apim beba" among the Ashantis, reflecting the Ewes' perceived superiority in battle. The people of Agotime Kpetoe celebrate the Kente festival every year around August and September. The Ashantis, due to their large population and business acumen, have globally marketed Kente as their own, even though the true quality Kete is made in Agotime Kpetoe. Despite this, 80% of the weavers in the Ashanti region are from Volta. Thank you Scanty! by the way, I'm from Agotime Kpetoe and got myself some beautiful gorgeous Ashanti lady. WE'RE GHANAIANS. That's all that matters.
Stop the cap,the Wokum apem beba saying emerged during the wars the Ashanti’s had against the Dagomba. The Dagombas were overwhelmed with the number of Ashanti warriors even though they defeated a lot and at the end the my were defeated by the Ashanti thus the saying. Please everyone should do their due diligence and research to verify a comment made on UA-cam , even mine. The same powerful Ewes were conquered by the Akwamu all the way to Ouidah in Benin lol, thus the reason Ewes have a seven day calendar and bear Akan day names . Originally they (groups who migrated from present day Nigeria) originally had 3 or 4 days in a week mostly based on market days

Scanty, hope you know that there’s a whole Asante tribe that settled in the Volta region who now consider themselves Ewes, just that they originated from Asantes. So there’re Ewes with Asante surnames. Edit: These Asantes took their culture and names to the Volta region and settled there, so some Voltarians even dance adowa because their forefathers are Akans. So did Asantes steal the Adowa dance too?

Maybe you don't know the real history. The phrase 'ke na te' got shortened to kɛtɛ. The Eʋe kɛtɛ was documented by a Dutch historian (Olfert Dapper) in 1668 (before the Ashanti Kingdom formed in 1701). A friend of mine actually saw the Eʋe kɛtɛ (attributed to the Eʋe people/Eʋeland) in a museum in Pennsylvania, USA. That kɛtɛ is dated about 2000 years old. You are right about Eʋes being Togolese, the Eʋeland spread across the present day Togo, Benin, and some parts of Nigeria. And by the way, if K. Nkrumah had lost that referendum to keep that part of the volta region strip in Ghana, the GH map would have looked different from what it is currently. That (land strip) was the cause of the tension between K. Nkrumah and Sylvanus Olympio.
