Shouldn't give any water at planting. The cladodes/pads initiate roots from the existing water within the pads, and the roots grow into the dry soil. Water after a month in the ground. The weeding is wrong to do, keep the weeds, don't apply herbicides, they increase the health of the soil, and are not negatively competing if kept trimmed to not get more than about 30cm height of foliage.
I used to live in Algeria and we had cactus which was as high as 4 meters. We have never used any fertilizers nor any manure. They used to produce a huge amount of cactus pears every year.We plant them as a fence and the cactus are stuck together and impossible to pass trough.
Just the very fact that that you let that plant grow to 4 meters tall in the fast dry winds of Algeria, demonstrates your ignorance in its cultivation. You have lost wealth through ignorance. Meanwhile, the sons and daughters of Algeria exile themselves to lands of Spain and France. Inshallah, that the light of knowledge and wisdom reaches you!
We prune ours by taking nopalitos and eating them. this is done when the pads are still growing, about half the size of a mature pad. Prickly pear that is freeze resistant is common across the lower 48 stats of the US.

I don’t think it’s really useful for the plants to weed out the little ones that grow in between. Probably it’s the opposite because in the middle and long run all the weeding and use of Herbizides will not just reduce soil fertility but also kill all the biodiversity. It’s good for the cactus to have some competition and have a few grasses and weeds growing in between.
Excellent... helpful for implementing team. Best suited plantation in degraded lands to produce fodder and fruits... Some clips from India/Odisha project can fit to it. Also cost benefit information be discussed.
You are correct. However, you have missed the the most important point. The youngest cactus pad are edible by humans. Indeed in Mexico, the country of origin and most cultivation, people eat it everyday. Their is precedent. Both cacao and vanilla originated in Mexico. One cannot say that they have not found success in India. Opuntia Ficus Indica will bring the most dramatic change to the Thar desert, and Hindustan will rejoice.

Thanks for vid watching from south Africa my one tree has over 400 fruits now and I have 6 trees what can I use for worms in the leaves it's a black and orange worm can you help please
As long as there are only a few worms why not just let them be? Why always kill everything that isn’t directly “useful”? Perhaps those worms can become butterflies or other insects and are actually important for other plants for pollination? If they become too many, just cut of the leaves that have the worms in them and get them to a far away place.
Yep, a pretty terrible insect for the prickly pear species. Sometimes though, i’ve recorded it on an opuntia engelmannii (my cactus) there was white fuzz on the areoles, but a few days laters it sprouted new pads!

The plant is sold by cutting not seed because the seed contains a valuable oil which fetches seven times the price of olive oil. It is used for cosmetics and is marketed under its French name Huile de Maroc or Huile de Barbarie.
@@parimalabaste9310 I don’t know who can supply you. I must reprimand you because you are afraid of using the variety with spines which would be more available. The spines can be cut off with a kitchen knife or singed off with a blow torch. If you have poor soil but need to feed: cows, goats, camels, sheep, & chickens, then this plant is for you. Even if you don’t need fodder, it still makes for a good substrate for Mushroom production. Do not do yourself a disservice! Also, you can make gobar gas with a biodigestor.
