  • In this weeks landscape / seascape photography video I find myself at Staithes, North Yorkshire for a sunrise that never happened.
Jostling for position at the classic spot, high above the village, I try and capture that famous scene - cliché it maybe but there's a reason it's so popular.
Will I be able to make something when the light has failed to appear? Will I find another composition down in the village?
Only one way to find out.... Enjoy the video.
This the first part of a short series of videos from the North Yorkshire coast.
Thanks to Dave Peck for coming along on this trip.

Excellent lobster pot shot. Certainly made up for the lack of a sunset.

That shot 8:15 was great Gary, brilliant composition and I liked the way you talked us through the focus stack 👍

Thanks very much. I seem to spend all my time focus stacking 🙂 In next weeks shot I have to focus stack from 6 inches in front of the lens to infinity!

Great video. Never been to Staithes, reminded me of my last trip to Whitby and after checking on a map I can see why!
Just added it to my "to-do" list for next time I'm in the area!

It’s a great place. Give me a shout if you make it back down this far south 👍🏻
Yep, well worth putting on the to-do list.
Some more gems from around Whitby coming in the next few weeks.

Thoroughly enjoyed the video Gary, and great shots!...That darker and moody atmosphere works for me and always lends a gravitas to images.
I'm hoping to get up North Yorkshire at some point this year, which would definitely include Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay as locations, plus others along the route...No definite plans made as yet.
As already mentioned in the comments, Staithes looks really nice, and I knew nothing about it either. So thanks for the tip and this will definitely be added to my location planner.
    Cheers mate!

I love Staithes it really is a gorgeous little fishing village. I've only visited once before but will hopefully return when in the area next month. Regarding focus stacking it's definitely worth taking multiple images at different focus points just in case. I've been caught out a few times over the years assuming I've achieved front to back sharpness shooting at f11/16 only to find out the background is soft

I've become obsessed with stacking I think. Its all I seem to talk about in my videos :-) Better to be safe than sorry though!
