    One of my pet peeves has always been putting unnecessary 0s on the end of everything. Instead of 800 points and everything costing 110/70/40/40/10, why not 80 points and everything costing 11/7/4/4/1. Much simpler, lol

      Yeah it’s really weird. If you’ve ever looked at Card Wars, they do away with the zeroes and monsters tend to not have more than maybe 8 attack if they’re really powerful. I quite like the simplicity of it. Although that’s probbaly a design choice since its full of goofy cartoon drawings more than anything about the actual numbers.

    Yes! It "stands like a horse" for eternity, untouchable. This privilege of knights gives them something special, to compensate for the fact that -- unlike bishop, rook and queen -- the knights do not gain any extended mobility on the extra-large board.

  • @AncientChess
    @AncientChess  11 років тому +2

    Great idea! When you get the set, you'll see that the inventor also loves innovation and encourages players to create their own variations of the game. This is a really nice game, and a well-made set. Thanks for the comment!

    Thanks for the question. I don't find any mention of castling in the rules. Basically, castling in this game is not necessary, since you set your pieces up from the start. You can create whatever protective position you want for your king in the deployment stage of set-up.

  • @jeffk1722

    wow pawns are only a quarter of the knight/bishop and 1/7th of a rook? I would just go all pawns.

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  8 років тому +16

      +Jeff K Would be an interesting game! Note that there is reason for the difference in values. On a larger board like this, bishops and rooks increase in power along with the size of the board. Pawns on the other hand decrease in power since they have a further distance to possibly queen. So ... beware!

    • @SmallAxeGroup

      But u can't go more than 16 pawns. But pawns are a bit broken. All pawns would only cost 160 points.

    how much money would i get if i became the Shuuro world champion? Also, where can i find more Shuuro game database material? I have "100 Grandmaster Shuuro Games" by Justin Case and "Winning with knight to J3" by Dr. Starglow Flashlight and Richie Cunningham, but it's hard to find other works on the subject. Also, in blitz games, do you do set up first and then start the clock? Also, has anyone actually ever played this game?

    Having so many pieces makes things more interesting in plenty of way also (or being able to have them). Piece values can be assessed more dynamically all the time, various permutations of "cohorts" can be created, and "strike forces". There is proportionately more board to cover, etc. It is chess, but just MORE chess.Knights are special, but now MORE special because of PLINTS. Good thing too, or knights would be totally outshone by bishops. And then there is randomness, and non-prearrangements.

    Makes sense. Seems like a fun chess variant, can't wait to give it a go. Don't want to get too crazy without actually playing it, but my first impulse is to mix in an element of Capablanca/Seirawan chess with the addition of the marshal/elephant (rook+knight) and chancellor/hawk (bishop+knight), both valued at or near the 110 of the queen. Would change how those blocks play for sure, though... Thanks for the vid!

    interesting. blue vs red, big board, set up at beginning ... I can see some similarities. both are great games. Stratego has some very close relatives in China, including Luzhanqi and dou shou qi. I think they may all be derived originally from Chinese chess, but there are many possibilities in those ancient game origins...

    Interesting looking game Rick. I'm curious if you're aware of the old 3M bookshelf game series from the 1960s and 1970s. They were a high quality series of games made into a box that looked like a leather bound book when It sat on the shelf. They had a wide variety of games which included two interesting chess variants. One was called Feudal and the other was called Ploy. They're no longer in production but are very Interesting games easily available on eBay for a reasonable price. If you're interested there are some video reviews on UA-cam.

    If humans had spent their time savoring new peaceful technologies (and discovering the Truth about their suppression) as much as a small subset enjoys chess and its many variations and styles, then it wouldn't have to be destroyed. Even so, while in this body I have a fondness for chess, and this variation is fascinating! I would expect that pawns have a terribly long way to go, but if structured with some efficiency both with each other and in relation to plints are still important.

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  6 років тому

      Think of the 'buying' pieces and arranging them as the 'opening of the game'. It's actually pretty quick (and shorter than a typical chess opening, in which players 'arrange' their pieces in the first several moves). There are many variants, both new and ancient, in which strategy begins with the initial setup of the pieces -- this is a 'new' one.

  • @smashu2
    @smashu2 8 років тому

    The rook are over price at 1.4 than knight and bishop at 1.33 than queen at 1.22 so buy max pawn and max queen 16 pawn and 4 queen 160 + 440 = 700 with 100 point left your stuck so i either 1 less pawn and buy a rook and a minor piece or I buy 2 less pawn and i buy 2 bishop and a knight.

    • @smashu2
      @smashu2 8 років тому

      +smashu2 I take back pawn are not as much a bargain than I thought because the board is bigger so there value decrease I think I would max out on queen for sure than the value of knight is decrease because the board is bigger but the platform make them immune to other piece so they are still pretty strong.

    Interesting game! I might remove the use of dice so as to make it a pure strategy game. And now that houseofstaunton.com sells 12x12 vinyl boards (with 2.25" squares), it would be easy to build a game. Amazon even sells a set of 10 nice 2"x2" wooden cubes for $16 USD :-)
    EDIT: though it looks like you would need to buy *5 complete sets* of chess pieces to handle the number of pieces allowed, which is up to 9 bishops, 9 knights, 6 rooks, 3 queens, 1 king and 18 pawns! And then you'd have a huge number of extra pawns lying around...

    • @rickknowlton9990
      @rickknowlton9990 7 років тому

      Yeah, that's the special deal about the knights -- they have immunity from capture when on the plinths ... except from another knight. It's supposed to give compensation for the fact that they are relatively less powerful on the large board. That is, a rook, queen or bishop gets a very long range on this board, while the knights' range stays the same.

    does the knight just ignores the blocks or does it effect its movemant?

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  5 років тому +1

      THe knight moves normally around the block but -- most important -- the knight is the only piece that is allowed to land on top of a block. This gives the knight a special power (it can only be captured on the block by another knight) ... which is supposed to make up for the fact that the long-ranging rooks, queens and bishops have an increased range of motion on the large board. The knight has no increased range of motion, but instead has this special ability to land on the blocks.
