DISCOVER THE LARGEST BASTIONED FORTRESS IN EUROPE, THE SANT FERRAN DE FIGUERES FORTRESS

Tour of the Sant Ferran Fortress in Figueres, a city in the Empordá region in Catalonia, Spain. It is the largest bastioned fortress in Europe with more than 3 kilometers of walls in which the most advanced military construction techniques were used within the Spanish military engineering of the 18th century. Also known as Castillo de Sant Ferran, it was the result of the Treaty of the Pyrenees that modified the borders between Spain and France after the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century. It was the scene of the Napoleonic Wars where one of the Great Heroes of Spain, General Alvarez de Castro, died, a military powder keg during the Spanish Civil War and a Francoist concentration camp.
