Joanna Lumley has now reached the half-way mark in her journey. At Khartoum, the White Nile is joined by the Blue Nile which flows from the southeast and Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Once a great trading center, Khartoum still has many remnants of the 19th century battles with the British. Lumley also undergoes a special skin treatment using scented acacia wood. On leaving Khartoum, she flies to Lake Tana where she eats some of the local delicacies and enjoys a local alcoholic beverage. A visit to St. George's monastery reveals extraordinary murals. From Lake Tana they drive to the Simien Mountains where young women train as long distance runners.
Welcome to the History Channel, the home of gripping and powerful documentaries. Here you can watch both full length documentaries and series that explore some of the most comprehensive pieces of world history.

It deepens your soul to see such a gift, freely given from someone of faith to a complete stranger visiting their home. There are lessons to be learned by these people. I have watched many of these documentaries and enjoy them greatly. However, in the moments when Joanna, in Ethiopia, goes to the where the healing waters are as recognized by the Coptic Christians in Ethiopia and was subsequently blessed an baptized by the priest, that act, for me, was more than enjoyment, it was moving. The priest seemed so genuine and kind and she grateful and gracious. In these past few years, I have watched in wonderment at the faith so many have but I do not. I envy them for having faith, pretty much whatever that faith may be. I don't have faith. Maybe I have been touched by so much violence, personally, amongst other things that I have become too cynical. I, in this situation, know that I would have been as gracious and as grateful as Joanna was and would hold that moment dear, but I don't know if I would carry that with me, other than as a reminder of a lovely experience. One might think that people go there when they are at their last, so desperate to be healthy, mentally and physically but I think that healings must have happened for people to repeatedly come from such a distance with no finances. There must be a basis for why....as in Lourdes, they found that the water that does heal some is found to contain large amounts of minerals needed by us all but not managed in all our systems so there, something happens. I would love to believe it is a higher power, but I don't know and if I ever said I believed it, I would be laughed at. So vain. Anyway, I found that scene so moving that I continually come back to it and watch every movement, gesture, etc. I envy their faith and the joy they find in it. Also, the young deacon/monk....20yo and already knows what he needs to. Inspirational.

I've have always admired Joanna so much, since I was teen and saw her in the James Bond's 1969 release , then followed her lates 60s and early, 70s, I loved in the Sapphire and Steel Sci-Fi saga at the end of the 70s, but this a truly new remarkable facet of hers. Her mellow , funny and gentle narrative, on-screen charming presence, the way she carries herself documenting that amazing African continent, breathtaking-landscapes ,all of these make a delight for the eyes , soul and the weary spirit to be carried over by , getting always the best of people on those forgotten regions of the world
    An Absolutely FABULOUS WOMAN !!!!

Its a matter of culture. The problem is a lot of muslims think saudi arabia is muslims role model but its absolutely wrong. We should follow and understand correctly only our Quran. Because saudi mix their culture in religion. Their barbaric way of life. Its just kaaba is in saudi

The moment you land in Addis Ababa the filth and the poverty will make you regret why you visit, this white woman is being paid to go through all that. She can put up with all that because the money she is being paid is worth the inconvenience and plus she takes everything she needs for convenience, what about you who probably is still struggling in western countries?
