I think this particular one has been staged, although it highlights a sadly all too familiar occurrence of a young disabled person being accused by an older person of misusing spaces. I resorted to making a placard to hang on my windscreen when I park that has the disabled symbol with and in huge print says: “A young person and disabled? YES! I use a wheelchair.” I use it with confidence and I educate anyone who asks. Although, you absolutely are under no obligation to do this. I tell them my need for using a wheelchair but not always. In 22 years of being a disabled driver no one has ever apologised for accusing me. I tend to find it’s older men who are more confrontational, women tend to look disapproving and give finger wagging a good go. On multiple times, I have clocked what they’re wearing and what they look like and then confront them in Tesco by politely asking if there’s a problem with me parking in a disabled space. When they see me they get the shock of their lives. I remain calm as possible and generally attempt to educate them and thank them for their time. They often end up, just listening and looking incredibly embarrassed!
No, I have experienced this kind of thing in the supermarket disabled bays. I had one last week where she came up to the door and demanded to see my blue badge. I pointed to the dash where I put it. I put up with it for a few more minutes and gave her a selection of the most extreme cuss words and stood there telling me that she'd call the police. As I got out of the car I noticed that she had no blue badge and when I mentioned it to her she said that was alright, she was just checking. She's lucky she was a woman, my crutches make excellent cudgels.
I would have said 'FO , call the police if you have any issues, I'll talk to them' and wound my window up. Finished. NEVER engage with nuts, it'll just go on and on and on and on and on......
Not all disabled people are missing a leg, confined to a wheelchair or are forced to use crutches. There are some invisible disabilities where the person may look healthy but they are unable to walk for any great length of time. So if they're displaying the disability placard just leave them alone and keep your thoughts to yourself. It only is an issue if they park in a disabled spot and they do NOT display a placard.
When she asked "what's your disability", yu shoulda replied that "I suffer with a blood pressure problem that causes you to walk around all day with a 12" stiffy". Would've loved to have seen her face to that reply :)
If a disabled person needs to rest or write up a list or even just gather their wits after a conversation with a busybody, I say they have every right to sit there for a bit without having to justify their actions. Ugh, what's the matter with people??? 😮 His car didn't look disabled???? 😅
The irony of her saying someone “doesn’t look disabled or their car”, while walking around with no obvious signs of disability herself. Also, calling a public parking space “my space” is peak Karen.
I am a disabled veteran myself but right now as long as I can walk I will do that. For there are people in much worse shape than I am, and need the space right now
My husband is disabled veteran, with handicap plate , when I drive without him I park far away because I feel blessed I could walk . He wish he could walk . Very sad to see people that should not park in ♿️ do .
I’m disabled also and I feel the same way as you. Until I cannot walk much or at all I will keep walking and not use disabled parking. I don’t want to lose the ability to walk by not walking. And, yes, there are people that need to park there more than I do.
Funny idea, I know, but if I was disabled and if I came to a parking lot with a few empty normal spaces which are not too far off the building I want to get into, I would park in one of those and NOT in the disabled parking spot, so just in case an hour or so later the parking lot might be full and another disabled person might come and still find the disabled spot empty. People claiming „ownership“ of disabled spots really are something.
