This is just awesome stuff. Pat Kirwin has forever changed the way I look at football as a fan reading his book "Take Your Eye Off the Ball". Trust me, must read for football fans.
What bill was saying is that the personell is just as important as the scheme. That's why u hear coaches talk about when they're are the draft or wherever, is does the player fit the scheme. U can't just plug any player in any scheme and except good results!
Also why franchises that fire coaches and GM's every oome to three years perpetually stink. As soon as you start putting that personnel together you have to start from scratch.
The best defense explained by Coach Cowher. It stuffs the run, and give you multiple opportunities for a variety of confusing zone blitzes. Most college teams should run it. Most coaches are too stupid to keep it this simple. There's a reason why Bill Cowher as a player beat out HOF Sam Mills a couple of years straight for a spot on the Browns. Bill was just a very smart guy to have on your football team - if only for special teams.
People forget that when Bill Cowher, Dom Capers, and Dick LeBeau arrived in Pittsburgh in 1992, the Steelers were rather thin on defensive linemen. And it showed during the course of the season as the Steelers' inability to rush the passer in conventional ways became obvious. Hence, the 34 "fire zone" was adopted. Next thing you know, all 11 starting Steeler defenders (and reserves) were sacking the quarterback.
Love this defense, and have been arguing it for years with people I have coached with.. The obvious caveat...do you have the talent athletes at all three levels? Monsters up front, freaks at LB, a beast SS, and a ball hawking FS.
can you explain how this was filmed ? particularly the lighting of the pens on the clear board so it shows up so well - i like this idea to help make videos for the kids i'm coaching to better understand schemes. chalk talk they can rewatch again and again.
The 46 is underrated with 2 safeties or fast outside linebackers at outside linebacker it's easy to switch to nickel and dime. Between the 3-4 and 4-3 the 4-3 is smarter because to me it's harder to find a good Linebacker or cb/s vs four linemen. With four linemen you don't need to be as good at Linebacker and cb/s if you draft trade or sign right. Plus Throughout history it seems that 4-3 is easier for defenses to get the scheme.
Defensive line dominance is a premium in a 4-3......like the Steel Curtain/stunt 4-3/Tampa 2 scheme. Not so much in a 3-4, where, unless you're Bruce Smith, the defensive lineman only has to tie up as many blockers as possible, thus freeing up the linebackers and defensive backs. Now, the biggest liability of the 46 defense is that you only have 2 db's in coverage. And if a quarterback like Dan Marino gets just enough time (like he did in '85 combined with his quick release), the 46 can get lit up big time.
You take away either the RE or LE in the 3-4. Whichever leaves your 2 best defense tackles along with your pass rushers. You're 2 inside linebackers are there still and you now have 5 DBs
Like any defense, it has weaknesses. CBs don’t get the support of a Cover-2 or Cover-4 and LBs can get placed in unfavorable matchups. If you don’t pressure the QB, it all falls apart, so you need get OLBs to get it done and pressure QB into INTs and mistakes
This should have at least 500k views... blows me away how many football fans have no idea what lies beneath.
you'd be even more surprised at how many "coaches" are clueless
Derrick did Santos that's why I'm here.... I've never played. had a little bit of an idea about what they meant by 3-4 defense... now I know

Bailey M couldn’t agree more! Reading it now.
I realized that if you watch a specific player all game youll see alot more things than if you just watch the snap
That was so well explained by Bill Cowher a true steeler legend
And really he barely scratched the surface
My first year coaching highschool football this year. Thank you for the tips

When people say thirty-four instead of three-four it hurts my ears.

I LOVE THIS
Great stuff.
Very well explained

Cohwer and Dick LeBeau we're Chess everyone else was playing checkers
2024. Now it’s a pass heavy league.

In a base defence like this, how do you transition to nickel? Is Sam replaced with a DB?
You take away either the RE or LE in the 3-4. Whichever leaves your 2 best defense tackles along with your pass rushers. You're 2 inside linebackers are there still and you now have 5 DBs
Cowher we need ya...come back to the Burgh!
Why isnt bill cowher not coaching dude is a legend much respect from a raider fan
Bill likes his current well paying job. He's had some hardship in his personal life, does not need the stress, and wants to enjoy things.
The W and S are the quarterbacks of this defense.
Still prefer 4-3 outside linebackers in coverage compared to a 3-4 pass rush- coverage linebacker.
I don’t understand why you wouldn’t play this system
It’s all depends on what types of players comprise the team’s defense. Some teams can’t do this if they don’t have the correct personnel.
exactly guys... like the Giants this past season ran the 3-4 and don't have quality LBs... amongst other holes in the D LoL

@@ThorMaximusIt can be worse in the 46, where you have 9 guys in the box ready to rush the quarterback.......more of a go-for-broke defense.
Is there a baby version?
The Steelers need a legit nose tackle. Haven't had one since Hampton. Haven't had one PERIOD in a while.
Remember guys, wenes
Cat and mouse game
Thats what this is
