I majored in biochemistry and now work in a medical lab, so I was familiar with HeLa cells for quite some time before I stumbled across the book about her. Reading her story absolutely astounded me. She didn't get nearly enough recognition for her continued contributions to the world. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did
I know this is a book video (and I'm sorry for asking here), but can I ask what you do and how long you studied? I want to study biochemistry as well and hopefully work in a lab, but I've read you can't really get a good job with just a bachelor's degree.
Caitlin A Oh that's okay! My bachelor's degree actually wasn't enough and I had to do a 2.5 year diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology when I was done. I'm Canadian so it's a little bit different than in the US. If you're American you can actually do a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory sciences or medical lab technology. I love the job! My email is tjclouston@mta.ca if you have any more questions about it 😊
AH I LOVE ANNE OF GREEN GABLES!! I've never listened to the audiobook, but I finally finished the series a few days ago and I'm obsessed with it. I very rarely see people talking about it, and this makes me very happy. Enjoy the audiobook!
I finished Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks last month and it was SO GOOD. I thought all the technical stuff was going to go over my head but its explained very well and I got very invested in the actual story as well.
You buying more Harry Potter books makes me feel slightly better about my own insane collection. I have all of the books in Czech and in English, then I also have the first one in French and then an extra copy of the fist one in Czech and in English. And I also have the illustrated editions (I told myself I would only buy the first one, which just did not happen). And I am definitely buying the house edition too. Help.
Henrietta Lacks. The Woman who died of cervical cancer and who's cells are still being used in cancer research today (called HeLa cells and every researcher knows where the name comes from). Her cells were taking when she had already died for research purposes to look at why she died. I actually recently finished a project with HeLa cells, it was incredibly usefull and instructive.
I just had my biology teacher in secondary school blatently talk about it during another subject (called ANW, which basically is general nature sciences, a combo of biology, chemistry, geology and physics). What I read more or less for his class and Dutch literature was: Darwins hofvijfer (Darwin's Dreampond) which expands on evolution research. The scientific phylosophy and history went on during uni :D and was obligatory for everyone. It is very important indeed
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks had been made into a TV movie that's coming out this April, which has Oprah acting in it. Thought that was interesting, hope it's an interesting book for you!
I had to read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks 2 years ago for my Intro to Global Health class at Uni and I absolutely loved it!! I am always recommending it to everyone I meet.
I read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks for my high school AP Lang class this past summer and oh my word it is so good. I read it in two days and it made me cry! I hope you enjoy it.
I just listened to Rachel McAdams performing Anne of Green Gables this month and I LOVED it! She brought it to life in all the ways you want - it was gentle and sweet and her voices were great! Basically, it was perfection.
So interesting that your science classes are teaching The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks! The book is really good and totally interesting. I think it gives a really good look at the human side and the ethics that should be involved in scientific research. Happy reading! :)
I listened to Anne of Green Gables on Audible at the end of the year last year and LOVED IT. Rachel McAdams did an awesome job. I would love for her to do the entire series. ♡
Ha! I just received "Piecing Me Together" and "We Are Okay". I cannot wait to read them. Also, I pre-ordered "Everything Everything" about two weeks ago on paperback. So, I'm awaiting that one, too.
I read the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks a few years ago and it was so interesting! Like nothing I've read before, and I beleive it's becoming a movie as well
I always enjoy the diversity of the books you read. It's clear you love fantasy, but you reach so much more. I can't wait to see what you think of Everything Everything.
I read The Immortal Life if Henrietta Lacks in February and I absolutely loved it! I'm interested to hear your thoughts about it when you finish it! Thanks for all your great content. I love your channel!
I had to read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks for a bio class a couple years ago and it's actually super good. I was surprised how easily the author brought me into a narrative more on the level I expect from fiction. I hope you enjoy it!!
You can definitely read Everything Everything in one sitting. I think I read it across two sittings due to time constraints, though it still only took around 3 hours total.
Great video! Going to pick up Piecing Me Together, sounds so interesting! Also I thought you were a History and Advertising major why do you have to take Biology classes? The philosophical one makes sense but why the other?
Great Haul Regan :) Please read Everything, Everything as it is one of my favourite books however I did enjoy The Sun Is Also A Star a lot more and it gave me a book hangover :( It was so worth it :D Looking forward to seeing your next video!
I had to read the immortal life of henrietta lacks for a class in high school and it was incredible. I didn't think I was going to like it but I LOVED it

Reagan, have you heard of the Bear and the Nightingale? It's a recent release that I think will be right up your alley. I believe it's based on Russian folklore and reads like a fairytale. I've been dying to get my hands on in myself.
I read everything everything last week in one sitting and I really quite enjoyed it but I still don't know how I feel about the ending and when u read it you'll probably know what I mean but I still gave it 4/5 stars :)
I really want to know what you think about Everything, everything! I read it when it came out but didn't like it that much. So predictable and not very believing to me!
OMG I LITERALLY JUST FINISHED EVERYTHING EVERYTHING WHEN I WATCHED THIS AND I WAS hummmm MAYBE EVERYTHING EVERYTHING'S GONNA BE IN HERE AND I WAS RIGHT!!! READ IT IT IS SOOO GOOD! And make sure you don't watch the trailer until you're done.

A few years ago, I listened to the audiobook of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I am not interested in medicine, but, since I have family and close friends in the medical field, I do try to dip into medically relatable stories. If you end up liking this book, I have some recommendations for you!
Ah so many books in this video that I've been dying to read. They all sound fantastic! I was wondering what book recommendation would one give for someone who has just finish reading both the Harry Potter series and the Throne of Glass series for the first time and are kind of on a fantasy/actiony type (basically similar genre to both those series) book kick? (I may or may not be the said someone who is coming to a close on both series [I've been alternating between the series so I don't lose interest in either book because they are so great!])
The immortal life of Henrietta Lacks explores how her cancerous tumor cells continued to divide for an extended period of time. These cells were used for the discovery of the polio vaccine and studying apoptosis patterns. They are popularly known as HeLa cells. The political story behind these cells were used(deals with racism) is so intriguing. You should totally read the book.
