    The Survival Summit tests 4 lightweight methods of producing coffee in the field, be it for camping or survival.
    There is nothing more comforting and energy-inducing while out in the field than a cup of coffee. without it, I may never leave the tent and eventually freeze to death. In this video, we explore 4 methods to making coffee whether you are camping or there is a S.H.T.F. situation.
    --------
    Want to get the new Survival Summit Essential Gear list PDF? thesurvivalsum...
    Methods in the video:
    Pour Over (Also known as Drip)
    French Press
    Tea Bag Method
    Cowboy Coffee
    --------
    Advanced Tips:
    Pour Over: After adding grounds to your hot water-washed filter pour a little bit of hot water over the grounds, just enough to cover and lightly saturate. Wait 30 seconds before starting your two minute timer and pouring the rest of the water. This "activates" the grounds which will produce smoother coffee and release the most amount of caffeine.
    French Press: Add coffee grounds to empty container and pour hot water over the grounds then use a spoon to mix any leftover floating grounds into the water. Takes more coffee grounds to make a stronger cup.
    ------
    If you are curious about any of the gear used in this video, this is the list:
    Four Dog Stove (Wood Burning)
    Snow Peak Trek 900 Titanium Cook set
    Snow Peak Titanium Short Spork
    MSR LiteLifter Pot Lifter
    Snow Peak Trek Titanium Plate
    Snow Peak Titanium French Press
    Snow Peak Titanium Double Wall Stacking Mug H450
    Snow Peak Collapsible Coffee Drip

    I’ve packed small amounts of food, coffee, tea, condiments in our bugout gear... along with simple stainless cups for a campfire... and a reusable filter!
    If you’re really in a SHTF scenario, a hot tea or coffee can really boost morale.

    Re: the teabag method; most places that sell tea in bulk also sell organic, reusable, compostable cotton drawstring teabags. Pretty good in terms of streamlining gear and reducing waste if you have the luxury of rinsing & reusing the bags. Similar to the press, strength varies depending on steeping time.

      If one is not car camping or backpacking near a water source this IS the way to go...cuz instant coffee sucks... also when on trail one can drop a bag in bottle and cold soak. NO extra gear to slow ya down !!!

    Good set of options for making coffee outdoors. I even take a small grinder to get a course grind for my press pot when hiking into the woods. I have tried all 3 methods even a Moka pot. Mixing good coffee with the fresh air, scenery and solitude is part of the enjoyment. I would think that even in a survival situation it helps to have a small distraction and a cup of coffee and even the process of making it can do that. I have seen how a cup of coffee can effect the moral of soldiers. For those that think you can not be in a true survival situation and have a good cup of coffee read the account of the Army Rangers in Mogadishu. During the heat of an intense battle one ranger who performed very well found an opportunity to make a good cup of coffee.

    I have a cabin on the thousand islands in gananoque, Ontario. I have a coffee maker, but when I’m up there fishing, I use a percolator more often than not. I think the whole process makes you appreciate the coffee more.

    My method is to grind the coffee at home. I bought these cotton sachet sacks with a drawstring on Amazon. They measure about 2 1/2 x 3 1/2“. I fill them with the ground coffee and then I use my Stanley 20 ounce cup similar to what you have and drop them in the hot water. Awesome coffee with zero grounds. Wash them out when you get home and they are reuseable . You get about a dozen for around six or seven bucks.

    Question: and this is not a joke: i can make great coffee while camping. My goal is to drink my prepared coffee or tea in my tent. My question concerns how to do this without spilling it. The only way I have come up with is to buy an expensive travel cup. If this what everyone does? ( cheap ones leak), or is there some sort of base that someone has devised ( like a bean bag ).
    I bet I will be heading to REI or Amazon… but I do enjoy coming up with a self made alternative and UA-cam viewers are the most creative people on this planet! Thanks!

    "Cowboy coffee" is my personal favorite. As an aspiring minimalist when it comes to camping, my gear is far from top notch. I simply use a 32 oz. pinto bean can, put in grounds, fill with water leaving about an inch of head room. Bring to a boil while stirring with a stick. Take off coals and set on the ground to cool. Setting on the ground immediately seems to do the trick as far as "shocking" the grounds to settle at the bottom. I pour out the coffee into my cup and have VERY FEW, if none at all, grounds in my cup as they stay in the bottom of the can. HINT: having a good pair of canvas gloves is also important in this method. No better method at all unless Starbuck's makes a drive through in the bush.

      Average Joe Sprinkle some cold water in the pot right after boiling, the grounds sink right to the bottom

    • @averagejoe8213
      @averagejoe8213 7 років тому

      Liam Hodge, I have heard that and have experimented with that over the years. It seems, for me, an extra step that I don't need. Simply stirring it lightly while cooking and setting it on the ground to cool after I've reached a boil does the trick for me. The grounds have always fallen to the bottom using this method. Thanks for the insight!

    French Press: put in the coffee. Pour in enough water to cover the ground coffee for one minute. Then pour in the rest of the water and wait for the total combined time to be four minutes. Anymore and the coffee starts to become acid. Hope that helps.. :)

      I have a few, the one that I use daily is an old Corning ware, the ones I have for open fire are sm. light weight 4 cup capacity that I picked up at the local antique shops and haven't found a name on them. If you go that route make sure you have the guts in the pot before you get it. They are very hard to find.

    About cowboy coffee, the real cowboy coffee uses the whites of one egg added to the brew about 4 minutes after the grounds are added to the hot water. The whites will conjeal on the bottom of the pot, trapping almost all of the coffee grounds. Yee-hiiio !

    Primula Brew Buddy. Also - use the Brew Buddy as filter pouring cowboy coffee from brewing container to drinking cup. Cowboy coffee has zero acidic tannin. Boil coffee-with-grounds for three minutes, put Brew Buddy on drinking cup, pour through Brew Buddy into drinking cup. Good coffee, no grounds.

    If I want to as light as possible I use a Mug Mate. If I want to get a bit better coffee I bring an Aeropress (maybe with a hand grinder if more serious) and if I'm not out alone and so want to make more cups at a time i bring the Stanley french press... it's stainless so a bit heavier but it's also wider so I can use the pot as a pot. I've played around with those single cup filters that hang on your cup with a little plastic stick, but I'm too clumsy for any pour over technique with a pot without a spout.

    Great video. I like the filtered cowboy coffee method. Just make the cowboy coffee in the big pot and pour it into your mug after covering the opening with a strainer. I use a cheap (highly porous) paper filter. Give some slack to make a bit of a bowl and hold it in place with a heavy duty rubber band. But there lots of other strainers that work. Some reusable.

    You can buy 3"x4" cotton muslin bags off Amazon to use for the teabag method. Because the bags are a lose weave, the hot water is able to get into the grounds in the center.
    Even though I have Toak's titanium press, I keep a few muslin bags in my kit for when I don't want to carry the press. The muslin teabag is perfect for through hikers and ultra-lite backpackers who want to bring [real] coffee, but don't want to carry any any extra gear. Each bag weighs close to nothing, so I can't imagine anyone legitimately complaining about the weight.

    In reference to "Cowboy Coffee" my Dad used to make it over a fire when camping and after adding the grounds a few minutes later would plunge the handle end of a red hot branding iron (or other piece of metal that was sitting in the fire) into the pot and I guess it would push all the grounds to the outer circumference of the bottom of the pot. No grounds in your mouth.

    Pre-ground coffee in tea bags is easy and clean, but you don't get a lot of options.
    I disliked the pour over because I used a plastic over cup holder with cone filters. I had to carry the bulky holder and clean it.
    Eventually I just combined and simplified by dropping the #4 cone filter into my Sea-to-Summit X-Mug (or the Walmart knock off) and steep in the mug (effectively lined with a filter). Carefully removing the filter is just like plunging a press, but zero cleaning.
    Actually I did cut out one sub-step I used as a crutch for using smaller cone filters. At first I used a clothes pin to hold the filter to the side of the X-Mug, just so it didn't fall in. Eventually I just use a better size and became a more gentle with the pour, and/or hand pinched the filter to the edge of the mug. This would be harder with a tall deep mug, but the X-Mug is sufficiently short and more conical.

    an other way to help settle the grounds on cowboy coffee is take your pot after you have stired it. hold it in your hand and do a quick windmills with it. just don't let go. this will help settle the grounds to the bottom. then drink with your teeth clinched for the ones you missed. coffee is this important!!!

    Let me get this straight: you worry about the filter taste on the drip, but you are okay with soaking a rubber band in the water for the tea bag method. Also, once you push down on the French press the grounds are isolated unless you pour out the very last drops.

    • @TheSurvivalSummit

      I didn’t like the tea bag method, the inner grounds did not get saturated enough plus the rubber band I’m sure added an adverse flavor. Taste buds were a little shot during filming from all the coffee 😜 was jittery for hours.

    Interesting take on the subject... The title however is a bit misleading. You are discussing coffee making for backpackers or light packers. Car campers aren't all that concerned with weight / space limits like this and can use Propane Drip brewers or percolators. I do agree though. The best method that you show, is the pour over / drip method... Cowboy coffee works, but I hate filtering the grounds with my teeth.

    Great video. Not sure I agree with you on the pour over coffee making a stronger cup of coffee then the press. That is the one thing I like about using the press, it's stronger and has more of the coffee bean oil that the paper filter removes, makes a more robust cup of coffee.

    • @TheSurvivalSummit
      @TheSurvivalSummit  6 років тому

      I was incorrect with the strength comparison. French press I believe has a higher caffeine content and stronger flavor due to the length of time the water is in contact with the grounds. Good call.

    What if in a survival situation, you need water, and what you find you have to boil the water? It will not be the bast water but coffee should cover any bad taste. Yes, I would filter the water with a T shirt or something then boil it. Then I guess it's cowboy coffee, presuming you heve beans or grounds. I wonder if you filter the water then boil it to use later, or boil it to kill pathogens then dump the coffe in the hot water. I am wondering should I use a pour over thing that is light weight that can be used for tea or even pine needles, get a metal percolator with no plastic parts for a campfire, Or just a metal coffee pot with no basket for cowboy coffee, and to boil water in too just to drink. I like the pour over method, I am thinking if you have no filters what to do. I like the french press too. Anything with a metal filter I think is better for survival, and a pot is a good thing to have just to purify drinking water. I think a percolator would work to filter and steralize drinking water. In survival, you need things that have more than one application. I think you could boil water, put grounds in a T shirt or something, then do a pour over in a cup... sorta like a pour over / tea bag thing. I suppose you could tear off a piece of cloth and put coffee in it and set it in a cup then pour the boiling water in.

  • @jamesaritchie2

    The best coffee always comes from water that's brought to a strong, rolling boil. You've been listen to the French who think coffee should never be boiled, and should be made even colder with a French press, and drank only after it cools down. A rolling boil actually neutralizes the acid and gets rid of the bitterness. Stop complicating the process. Bring a coffeepot. Fill with water. When the water is warm, and coffee. A lot of coffee. Bring to a rolling boils and keep it there for two minutes. Drink coffee. it's call cowboy coffee, and it wins more awards that all the French press, don't boil it coffee in the world.

    • @TheSurvivalSummit
      @TheSurvivalSummit  6 років тому

      The French presses have a reusable filter that should eliminate any grounds from getting into your poured coffee. I love mine from Snow Peak due to the weight, made out of Titanium. However, it can get warped over time if it’s stuffed in the bottom of your pack which will lead to grounds getting around the filter. Most French presses are made from materials that are more rigid, though heavier.

    I dont understand how the drip method produces a stronger cup of coffee then the french press. is there any reasoning behind this or just his opinion?

    • @glennismade
      @glennismade 8 років тому

      +Survival Summit french press actually produces far more nectines (strength producing particles) inside french press, the issue is because its an immersive method it tends to produce a more acidic cup the longer you leave it. it also leaves half of the coffee stuck to the grounds. pour over on the other hand has nearly no body to it and is a clean and light cup of coffee. but you can easily increase the strength with more coffee to water although I would recommend a 21-1 or a 16-1 ratio for best results.

  • @2012Viking

    While camping I have tried the percolator, teabag and "Cowboy" method and while they work (sort of, lol), I don't like the coffee as much as I did my home brew. My new go-to for both camping and at home is the Aeropress ( amzn.com/B00WT76SYY ). It is not compact like your drip method or the teabag but the coffee it make is superior to anything else I have tasted, IMO, including from my Keurig. A friend of mine used to always use the french press for camping until I had him try my Aeropress, he now has one and uses it. He says it is a smoother coffee and just better than what he could get from the french press. The downside for camping or survival, if needed for that, is that it is almost all plastic and I don't know how durable it will be long term. I think if you are careful and don't intentionally abuse it, I think it will be fine. (Hey Aerobie how 'bout a titanium Aeropress???)

    • @2012Viking
      @2012Viking 9 років тому

      +Survival Summit I have only had and used mine for about 8 months now and the only thing that needs replaced are the paper filter discs unless you pay the extra and get the stainless steel filter. Then you don't need to replace anything. I do have the stainless filters but prefer the paper ones. It came with 350 filters and since the filters are about the diameter of a silver dollar and same thickness as any coffee filter, they take up virtually no space. If you do decide to try it, I would pay the extra couple dollars and try the ss filters. If they work for you it would be one less thing to worry about and then nothing would need replaced. I also suggest checking some of the videos on youtube on how to use it and how to do the (?name) 'reverse brew' method, makes a stronger cup-o-joe. - I agree titanium would be awesome :)

    • @2012Viking
      @2012Viking 9 років тому +1

      +Survival Summit oh, and another quick tip, though a little expensive. If you already have, like I do, a Keurig, the k-cups are the perfect measurement and grind for this. Simply cut them open and pour into the Aeropress. Since I almost never use my Keurig any more I had a lot of the k-cups to use up and they are handy for camping because you don't need to measure and only need to 'open' one cup at a time so the coffee stays fresher.

      2012Viking I am an Aeropress fanatic but never would have thought of using the K cups with it! Uh, no offense but you left out the obvious (and in my opinion the best) option. I have been backpacking in the North Cascades for over 40 years and we went through the cowboy coffee idea many years ago. Never liked french presses in the best of circumstances and drip coffee makers usually wind up cold within minutes. The best thing I have used for years now is instant. It used to be Folgers which, granted, was just better than a sharp stick in the eye. But for the last few years Starbucks Italian roast instant does the trick. It is Starbucks and it is instant, but it is a relatively good coffee that is quick and full of coffee goodness. And being from the Seattle area, an 8 ounce cup of coffee is what we give to our children to get them to sleep. I have a 52 ounce coffee cup and on occasion if the situation warrants it, I'll have two cups. Instant coffee would be my choice. Thanks for reading.

    • @TheSurvivalSummit
      @TheSurvivalSummit  6 років тому

      I didn’t do instant for this video cause it’s not really a method for brewing coffee but it shouldn’t be discounted. If I were to make the video today it would be included for sure. It’s a great light weight solution and is fast. I also use the Starbucks instant from time to time if I don’t have time for the longer methods. Southeast USA where I’m typically camping cold pour over is not an issue lol but it is for people camping in colder climates, thanks for your comment!
