    Great video, the view is amazing.
    This is the way I make coffee while camping as well, I think it's the best.
    A word of warning: I broke the brass tube on mine a few years ago. The manufacturer does not sell the tube alone, they will sell the top and tube for a few dollars less than a new unit.
    I cut and threaded the tube and it works fine. I remove it for travel.
    I use a moka pot at home, same thing with a pot on top.

    Hey there Lonnie and Connie. I recently found your channel and am loving your videos.
    I see you using a lot of surivval/bushcraft related tools and products. Have you ever considered signing up for Amazon's affiliate program? It works by you sending traffic to their website from your videos, you don't have to add anything you your videos, just a link in the description. For example you use the GSI 4-cup, you could put a link to that product in the description of your video for people to purchase.
    If people buy it with your link, you make 8-12%+ from the sale. I don't mean to bug you with this and I'm not trying to profit or anything, but I just thought it might be helpful to both you and your viewers.
    I'll be watching! Take care,
    J

      This coffee maker eventually broke on me when transporting by snowmachine on a winter campout. The brass spout broke off. So for my everyday coffee maker for home I got the Stainless steel Bialetti Venus model and love it. I have had it for several years now. To replace this one here in this video after it broke, I found an aluminum standard 8 sided Bialetti Moka Express at a thrift store. I wish it was stainless but otherwise I love it.

    • @angelus_solus
      @angelus_solus 4 роки тому

      Ah, I was wondering abouyt that. GSI also makes a coffee maker that has a pot on the top that doesn't have a spout. I think that would be more durable.

      @@angelus_solus Yes I have seen that GSI stainless on the web and liked the looks of it. It was quite similar to my Venus model but had butterfly wire handles much better suited for fire use. It is called a GSI Moka Espresso Pot on Amazon.

    Hey Lonny, big fan of your videos.
    Your coffee maker looks to be based on the old greek/italian machines. An Italian girl taught me that the perfect amount of water to use is enough to cover the brass inlet port half way, but that may be too much for your cup, and you should get an even nicer cup out of it by tamping down the beans - it slows down the water and keeps in it contact with the beans for longer. It looks like the base of your alcohol stove is about the perfect diameter to use too.

    • @stilianivanov3377
      @stilianivanov3377 8 років тому +9

      The amount of water is up to you. Italians drink short coffees, and they drink it in a few sips... Including me. Nice thick liquid, darker than coil. However you are 100% right about the packing. The ground mixture has to be tightly packed in there, and when you screw the top part on - it should compress a bit more. This way a higher temp is required to heat the bottom part up, the more pressure builds in and the steam/water passes trough it harder. As a result you get much better extraction.

    • @dullbrass
      @dullbrass 8 років тому +2

      The packing and the amount of water go together. Therefore you can get different sizes of these espresso makers. So water up to the brass valve, like Alexander said.
      I would add that you should better use espresso powder instead of regular coffee, it makes a huge difference. I'm not sure why that is though.

    • @idnwiw
      @idnwiw 8 років тому +2

      "espresso powder instead of regular coffee" The difference is the grain size only.

    • @c6q3a24
      @c6q3a24 8 років тому +3

      Yup, it comes down to how fine the beans are ground. Lonny says he does this himself - which is best for a good cup of coffee also.

    • @davidossinger8183
      @davidossinger8183 8 років тому

      Alexander I've got one like that yeah, Bialetti. Makes a richer brew if you fill the filter cup and tamp it very lightly. But you're getting several shots of espresso at a time, so I always share and add water to each cup for americano style.

    Lonnie.....I know this is long past the time that you published this but hopefully this tip will help you even now.....since you have an aeropress, if you put a wet aeropress filter under the top portion of your stove top espresso machine or your moka pot, it will filter out the fines that come through and give you a cleaner cup of coffee. I learned this from James Hoffman's YT videos,who is a great resource for coffee knowledge and I remembered that you mentioned that you do not like the particulates that can come through in this kind of brewing process. James also has a great series of videos on the Aeropress you might find interesting. Take care...

    You learn alot from those who have been where you'd like to go. I like your gear. I'm curious as to the maker of your canteen and coffee maker. Also curious as to how long it took to shoot that video from the point you started recording to finish. I enjoy your videos. They help me to enjoy life. Thank you for adding good things to life and not bad things.

      My "canteen" or water bottle is just a standard stainless steel water bottle. The lid however is a stainless steel lid as well that i found at a thrift store on another stainless water bottle don't know the brand name for the lid. I have three or four of these type water bottles and do not know the maker of any of them. They are pretty common here in the United States. The coffee maker is called the 4 cup GSI mini espresso maker. I know what you mean about good things / bad things. We have to wade through far too much "bad things" in life to want to experience them on purpose.

      Espresso isn't a fancy coffee, it was litteraly the Red Bull of it's day. If you went to an espresso bar you wouldn't even sit. Just take the shot and be on your way back to work.

    Thank you for the field tutorial on making coffee. I haven't tried making coffee in the higher altitudes and perhaps this is the reason for the espresso maker? I boil water and pour it through a single cup strainer of my fav ground bean. I like the use of the cheap denatured alcohol.

      The reason why I like this mini espresso maker is because of the resulting smooth non bitter result. This maker seems to make much better tasting coffee in my opinion than any old fashioned perculators or drip types I've tried including the ones with gold coated foil screens/ filters or paper filters. I also personally enjoy the process of making the coffee using this method.

      I broke the brass neck off of mine and so had to replace it with a different style but the same concept that works the same way. I still use mine daily and I agree that the process of making the coffee is part of the reason for making coffee. I just enjoy the whole process. I even roasted my own beans for several years using a hot air popcorn maker. I recently went back to buying whole roasted beans due to the difficulty of obtaining raw beans.

    Great espresso maker, I've had 2 for about 20 years in fact one of mine has been around the globe from Asia, Europe and back.
    Now your use of a gas treatment bottle is a top tip... low cost fuel bottle that is marked well and don't leak.
    FYI I've forgot once burned up gasket in one.... reason I've got second one while locating replacement gasket.

      I have forgot to add water in one of my moka pots once and it got very hot but thankfully I caught it before any damage was done. It had a silicone gasket which handles high heat quite well.
