"Cartoon" is equal to "Anime" only as a general term for animated works. The difference is that Anime includes all forms and styles of animated works, from kid shows to full-length animation features and everything in between. Astro Boy was indeed inspired by Disney, specifically the author was a mad fan of Donald Duck comics and how they came alive as cartoons. We got manga->animation. In contrast, the term "cartoon", as it originated, referred to a time and period-specific animation - simple situational shorts, light, and comedic/satiric in nature. Everything before 1937, when Snow White in 7D became the first "animated musical fantasy film" as a "cartoon" it wasn't. But dictionaries aside, the main difference comes from Japan having a very unique and distinct cultural identity, relationship with hand-drawn arts, and all the other things with region-lock DRM. USSR's animations are another example of "One does not simply copy... ".

Anime in definition means animation/cartoons in Japanese, i forgot but someone literally made a video asking Japanese people what anime is, and over in Japan anything cartoony or animated is anime, for example frozen, minions, SpongeBob are considered anime by Japanese people. The idea of anime being only Japanese is a western idea, but could you blame them anime clearly has a distinct look right? but then when western media starts to look like anime, is it now also anime but not made in Japan? Honestly, and technically everything animated is anime. Argument over. Conclusion, at some point everything will be anime why not just call it anime. Btw it is fine for people to go out of there way to distinguish the two differently, honestly who cares at this point just enjoy what you wanna watch.

I think what defines the term is largely context. The "anime industry" should largely be defined as animation coming from Japan and exclude anime-inspired Western animation like Avatar. There is a greyish line when western studios use Japanese animation studios or international animation, but it's mostly exclusively Japanese. In "I watch anime", I would include animation inspired by the Japanese style of animation, including western cartoons that use the style of anime

I dislike this video, mainly because you spent the first half of the video giving the "Anime is animation from Japan" definition way too much latitude. Clearly from the rest of the video, you at least understand that anime is an art style, and like any other art style (art deco, impressionism, brutalist architecture) there is never going to be a concrete definition that can be used for delineation. The only purpose the first definition serves is for an algorithm to sort shows into anime and not anime baskets. Humans have no reason to think like that or use that definition

Here's the easy answer: We are speaking in english, anime is whatever is primarily produced in Japan, has a Japanese dub, and targeted at a Japanese audience. We are speaking Japanese: Anime includes south park, king of the hill, and spongebob.

Non-japanese cartoons that I like which adopt the anime style -> Not anime, but i wouldn't argue against it. On a case by case basis, I might even agree. Non-japanese cartoons I don't like -> Not anime.

10:41 the info is incorrect. Link Click is based on Chinese comic/manhua "时光代理人" (not donghua. donghua is animation.). Also it is made by LAN Studio which is a Chinese studio. It has a Japanese Dub. But that doesnt make it anime.

Well actually the information that you shared is false or a least to some extent. Link Click is an original project without any source material hence why named Donghua. It has a manhua for it now but that came after the donghua

Aniplex owns Half of Crunchyroll LLC, and Sony Pictures aquired Funimation then Aniplex made a deal to transfer there assets outside Asia to Funimation forming Funimation Global Group LLC a joint business between Sony Music Japan and Sony Pictures Television Distribution America that ran Madman Anime, Animelab,, Cynthia Manga UK, and another streaming service in Europe named Wakanim. They aquired Crunchyroll from Warner Discovery and took the brand because it had larger global reach. Aniplex still operates Aniplex of America

That’s why I said if you want to make money in the anime industry, you should become a manga creator. Mangaka receive 10% royalties for each volume sold. For example, in the case of Jujutsu Kaisen, 100 million copies * ¥480 * 10% = ¥4.8B, or $48M
