Apparently, this film was re-released this year, but as a cut purely by the BBC, resulting in a shorter running time and NO voice overs (except narration, by Benedict Cumberbatch no less), more like the original series. I'm both thinking 'Yes! At last!' and 'Why didn't they do this in the first place?'.
If this movie wasn't dubbed over, it would've been so much better than what we got. Heck, even my nephew, who was 6 at that time, and my niece, who was 5 at the time, thought that it was boring. It got so dull because those voices just take you out of it so fast. Thank goodness for the Cretaceous Cut though
+TheBowserPrime Actually, don't look for the Cretaceous Cut because it is basically the movie on mute. I saw this movie on mute and it was then I noticed the second biggest problem the movie has, the editing. The movie is edited in a way to where the asinine dialog is NEEDED in order to take in the full experience.
(1:22 - 1:47) "Gahh, why the dino-ma-saurs not talking? I-I-I saw them talking in Land Before Time 27, a-a-and if they don't talk, that'll just confuse the kiddies a-a-and their moneyz. Ooh! Ooh and, uh, while we're at it, can we get Sid from Ice Age and Alvin from Alvin And the Chipmunks for the voices? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Tha-that'll bring in the moneyz."
If anyone wants to watch this movies great animation without hearing the beyond terrible voiceovers the Blu-Ray 3D edition has what is known as the Cretaceous Cut. This is a version of the movie that is completely free of any dialog. Its also about ten minutes shorter due to editing out the pointless live action bookends. Its not perfect as it still has a shitty music track and that dumb camera rewind moment is still left there but its vastly preferable to the theatrical cut which is beyond terrible
Loudmouth Reviews, I really believe in your opinion about Walking with Dinosaurs Movie. Plus, I’ve watched better dinosaur movies that are way better then Walking with Dinosaurs Movie including March of the Dinosaurs, Speckles the Tarbosaurus, Dinotasia, Planet Dinosaur Ultimate Killers and Dinosaur 2000. Those are my favorite dinosaur movies and they are way better then Walking with Dinosaurs Movie.
Kieran Stark, Thanks dude, you’re so amazing and awesome for correcting my childhood movies. Plus, The Land Before Time is not the only dinosaur movie in my childhood, Dinosaur 2000, March of the Dinosaurs, Speckles the Tarbosaurus and DinoTasia are the best dinosaur movies that are way better than Walking with Dinosaurs Movie in my childhood.

There's actually a version of this called "The Cretaceous Cut" where the animals don't talk and the awful soundtrack is fixed. But the Gorgosaurus "tiny-arms" Scene is still there, so it kills the mood of the film. Technically it could be better if the dialogue and voice actors were more convincing, as was the case with 'The Jungle Book.' I for one enjoy animal anthropomorphism if done right.
You know what? I don't care what anyone says. I actually love this movie. 1. It introduces different species of dinosaurs that we never learned about before. 2. It tells a bracing coming-of-age story; The storytelling delivers more elaborate information about being a great leader. 3. The soundtrack is top-notch. 4. When it comes to Hollywood mainstream dinosaur movies, this movie is about as realistic as it gets. As for the voice acting, I was charmed by the enthusiastic energy delivered by John Leguizamo, Justin Long, Tiya Sircar, and Skyler Stone. The tone is tongue-in-cheek and lightweight, and yet it does not insult the children's intelligence. If you have never seen Homward Bound, and don't understand anything about dinosaurs or animals, then you will not understand why the voices dubbed over the creatures. It's a unique, underrated gem. It's annoying when people keep hating this movie.
I think this is the only movie reviewed by AniMat to receive BOTH the AniMat Seal of Garbage AND a perfect 10 out of 10 for its animation at the same time!
"Oh oh and while we're at it,can we get Sid from Ice Age and Alvin from Alvin and the chipmunks to do the voices?" You know,at first you'd think he was joking and used those 2 annoying voices to emphasise how annoying the voices were...he wasn't kidding...those were the cast
2013 a year that started With Escape from planet earth & ended with Walking with Dinosaurs well looks like that year felt like the start of what Hollywood is going to treat animation horribly!
This actually ended up being one of those films that I like and everyone else hates. The funny thing is the story behind the making of this movie is similar to the story behind the making of The Thief and the Cobbler. They both took a lot of time, work, and money to make, then at the very last second, a team of d-bags took over and made too many changes, taking what was originally supposed to be something special, different, and can be enjoyed by everyone and turning it into just another kids movie.
"Gaah, why are the thief and cobbler not talking? I saw them did it in Disney's Aladdin. If they don't talk, it'll just confuse the kiddies and their moneiez. Oh, and can we get Simba from Lion King and Papa Smurf to be the voice overs? Yeah, that will bring in the moneyz."
KidSnivy69 Yeah, I do! It's because the dialogue was real heavy annoying everyone. I just ended up being lucky enough to not be bothered by it. The reasons I loved it were the adventure and amazing animation.

I've seen this movie in early 2014 and thought it looks interesting....and I was wrong! I too hate the voice acting and the characters. Plus I'm surprised no one pointed (SPOILERS) out the pointless opening scene of the human boy saying he hated dinosaurs and the closing scene had no justification towards it. They should've deleted those scenes as it added nothing to the story.
NWR1991 I too don’t like the voiceovers and it’s still really bad. But the animation is spectacular and I loved it when I younger. So I can only rewatch it not only for nostalgia, but to admire the realistic visuals. And c’mon. It cant’t be worse than FOX’s next F up Fantastic Four 2015. Also, those opening and closing scenes would’ve made a bit more sense in the voiceless version.
This could have worked if it was done like Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron: no talking dinosaurs, the movie tells its story without dialogue and the only voice is the occasional narration from the lead character
*sigh* What a horrid way to go; one of the best series of dinosaur documentaries of all time, reduced to a glorified Land Before Time sequel! And not one of the decent ones, either! Luckily, there *is* an upside to this mess: BBC themselves realized what a wretched mistake this was, and made a non-talking dino-version a year after this film's release. The only bit of dialogue that survived is a narration by the great Benedict Cumberbatch. And hey, I'll take Smaug/Sherlock Holmes over Sid and Alvin any day!

I remember when I saw the first trailer and I got so excited. I thought it was going to be like the bbc show, and I was beyond excited to see a dinosaur movie without talking. animalman57, you’re right, this movie is like a crappy version of Dinosaur 2000. I hope they come out with a Director's Cut without all the voice-over stuff, 'cause I was actually really wanting to watch this movie when I saw the first trailer. Then the next series of trailers came out, and I was like "Nope, not touching that." Seriously, if there was no dialogue, I would've tried everything in my power to watch this, especially since I was a huge fan of the BBC mini-series as a kid (but with Kenneth Branagh narrating it; skip over the Avery Brooks one if you can).
This is hands down the WORST animated movie I have seen in my life. Never before have I seen a more soulless cash grab intent on insulting the intelligence of people in general. Not to mention the editors, voice actors and ESPECIALLY Fox's distributors wasted years of life risking painstaking work the animators went to extremes. Thank goodness this movie was nuked by both Frozen and Saving Mr. Banks, the animation studio would move on to make The Lego Movie and Great Britain would learn from this and keep Shaun the Sheep Movie as far away from Fox and the focus groups as possible. DON'T watch this movie, it is the worst adaptation ever made right up with The Cat in the Hat. Even The Last Air Bender movie was far more faithful adaptation of its source material than this dino turd. Not even the mute button can save us from the evil of Fox.
AniMat: The film is filled with terrible nonstop voiceovers by 4 idiots. Me: Well, it could be worse. It could’ve been all of the dinosaurs talking throughout the entire movie like the Gorgosaurus and Patchy’s parents. If it did, it would be Benedict Cumberbatch and Woody Harrelson voice the Gorgos, and Gerard Butler voicing Patchy’s Dad.
I once went to a science world and saw a short documentary based on this film. This time, there was no bad voice acting. Only a heap of great CGI and actual dinosaur sound effects. That was heaven.
I must have forgotten this while watch the film, but watch all the scenes play in this video, I noticed that the location of the hole in Patchy’s head. It keeps flipping on both sides of his head.
I'm going to give my opinion about both the original documentary and this movie. Starting with the documentary, I used to like it back when I was a child. I already had a major liking to such dinosaur projects as The Land Before Time and Jurassic Park. So, when I heard there was going to be a six-part documentary about dinosaurs, I got pretty excited. I already enjoyed it on television, and then when I got it on home video, I kept playing it over and over again. I suppose what I liked about the documentary was the variety of dinosaurs. From the Triassic to the Jurassic to the Cretaceous, this documentary really helped me imagine what life was like for dinosaurs back then. It got up to the point where I would make up my own dinosaur documentaries. Today, the fact that all the dinosaurs are CGI sometimes turns me off, but I still respect the documentary for giving dinosaur fanatics something to enjoy and get their imaginations flowing. Now, as for the 2013 movie, I actually watched it in theaters, and my most legitimate disappointment is actually the LACK of dinosaurs. Yes, it has a good supply of species, but compared to how many the documentary had, this movie is rather bare. This is likely because the movie only stays in one moment of time. Yes I know, this is a one-part movie, not a six-part documentary, so it may not have had enough time to go into all the proper time periods. But what that basically means is, Walking with Dinosaurs should never be a movie. It should always be a multi-part documentary for television. As for the long dialogue added in, I actually did not mind it at all. One of my few problems with the original documentary is that all it had was one actor: Kenneth Branagh as the narrator. I wish that documentary had more than one actor to play other dinosaurs so I could listen to recognizable voices. This is the only part I like better in the movie than in the documentary; even with only four voice actors, I can still listen to who's talking and picture how famous a voice actor that person is. Yes, I would have accepted a couple of pauses for silence and a couple of jokes actually annoyed me, but as for the lip-sync, I say the dinosaurs are better off without it because this basically lets the voice acting be what the dinosaurs are THINKING, not what they're saying. So technically, they are still roaring like the dinosaurs they are. I think this is why Roger Ebert complained about Disney's Dinosaur. If that movie had no lip-syncing, he would have liked the dialogue much more. So, am I accepting the long dialogue in this movie? Yes. Do I think the movie is better than the original documentary? Not really.
AniMat gave the movie animation of 10/10, and the maximum calculated score to a 3/10 is 10 out of 30. Adding the Story and Characters, the calculated score is 14/30, which is a 5/10, which is also the equivalent calculated score to Ice Age 4. Speaking of Ice Age, Sid is mentioned in this review.
Overall Score for Walking with Dinosaurs: Story: 5/10 Animation: 10/10 Characters: 4/10 Voice Acting: 6/10 Music: 9/10 Overall: 6.8/10. I still didn't think the idea of voiceovers was a good idea.
The reason why Disney Dinosaur (technically) worked more than this film is because it has a better story, more fleshed out characters and the movie knows when to be silent Damn Hollywood🦖🦕
This film should have gotten a 5/10. It got 14 points out of 30, so that would have rounded up to 15/30, and it wouldn't have gotten the Animat Seal of Garbage
"Daaah, why are the dinomasaurs not talking?? I saw them talking on Land Before Time 27, and if they don't talk that'll just confuse the kiddies and their mannies. Oh and while we're at it, can we get Sid from Ice Age and Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks for the voices? Yeah, that'll bring in the mannies!" Exactly what the execs said with that last-minute decision. I appreciate the Cretaceous Cut for actually taking the criticism into concideration.
so the only reason the movie is not worth watching is the voiceover? just watch the cretaceous edition if you hate the dialogue, that is an option you know. it removes the dialogue
I not understand why people complain about Dinosaurs talking in movies, but there are some good things Land before Time and Dinosaur do for us: They knew when to stop talking! They both gave such memorable and powerful moments without any piece of dialouge. They knew when to stop and gave the audience time to breath. This movie botches everything that made those movies memorable and visualy stunning. Fox was greedy for money and whoever announced these talented voice actors to be in this film should have been fired! I can't believe i used to like this movie. The only thing that is good in this film are the visual effects, but that is it.
I'm going to make my own animated dinosaur movie. it mixes Disney's Dinosaur and a documentary called Dinosaur!. It will have a similar fill to the Rite of Spring segment from Fantasia.
I'm sorry everyone. After many years, I decided to instead make a sci-fi/fantasy series about a Tyrannosaurus rex named Theo. This is based on a bunch of fanfics(including one on Wattpad) I made when I was young. Thankfully, Season 1 will mostly focus on Theo's life in the Cretaceous(in a fictional fossil site), and there's no dialogue.
I finally watched it a few days ago and I was VERY disappointed. The animation plus the inclusion of John Leguizamo is the only redeeming factors about the movie. Thank goodness for the Cretaceous cut. Edit: OMG - You put “Hoppípolla” by Sigur Rós in the background music! Made my day! I’d know that song anywhere!
I feel like the only reason that this has the same name of the series (which was one of the best dinosaur docs ever) is to get people who loved that series to come see it.
There’s a Korean dinosaur movie very similar to walking with dinosaurs. It’s called The Dino King, also known as Speckles The Tarbosaurus. But the main character is LITERALLY the only one that talks! Plz review that one if you haven’t already 😁

Justin Ferrell Awesome! Thanks for telling me!
Dumber than Sony?
Jesus...
Oh just wait until You see Foodfight
Honestly, The Movie is ok if you just turn the volume off
Am I the only one weirded out about this film having the only rating with a 1/10 and a 10/10
Is it me or is that impression of the guys that added the voice overs you did sound kind of like that Piction from Storks
1:22 Lol his dimwit voice sounds a lot like Big Billy from The Powerpuff Girls.
This movie makes me sad. This animation is SO beautiful. How dare they botch it up with those horrible voice overs
"It's like if somebody took an actual scientific documentary and turned it into a really bad youtube poop"
-Rick Raptor Reviews
I like the Ralph the Guard Impression from Animaniacs in this review!
So basically, this movie was ALMOST…
Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal before Primal. BUT THEY SQUANDERED IT!!! SQUANDERED IT!!!
Original 2013 movie:
Story: 1/10
Animation: 10/10
Characters: 1/10
Overall: 3/10
Prehistoric Planet re-release:
Story: 10/10
Animation: 10/10
Characters: 10/10
Overall: 10/10
The poor editing is still in the Cretaceous Cut.
It actually didn’t. Animat just flipped the shots in the review.
What I’ve just noticed is that this is a rare “Animat Seal of Garbage” worthy film which has 10/10 quality animation.
According to one article I read, and I quote, the talking dinosaurs "was Fox's preference".
1:22 Why are sound like Big Billy?
If you calculate the scores it's actually like a 5 out of 10
Yeah, but I think the reason he did it was since he hated the talking so much…
Calculating error. AniMat has done it plenty of times.
Great idea to reupload this in 2015: The year of the Dinosau- I meant Sheep :)
yummy you posted that comments on my birthday :3
Tsiki Condor
Lol. Yeah..
Mat, you had the math all wrong
3+10+1 = 14
14/3 = 4.6 -> 5
Glad I’m not the only one I noticed.
He did the same in the Ice Age 2 review.
4+8+4 = 16
16:3 = 5.33 (Closer to a 5)
Yet the movie got a 6…
He would’ve added “Dialogue: -5/10”, considering that it ruins the experience of the movie that was meant to be silent.
@@joaquinm9148 Finally someone else mention that
I'm going to give my opinion about both the original documentary and this movie.
Not really.
Despite the bad voice overs I still enjoyed the movie.
1:22-1:48 animat sounds like Ralph the guard from animaniacs
AniMat gave the movie animation of 10/10, and the maximum calculated score to a 3/10 is 10 out of 30. Adding the Story and Characters, the calculated score is 14/30, which is a 5/10, which is also the equivalent calculated score to Ice Age 4. Speaking of Ice Age, Sid is mentioned in this review.
Overall Score for Walking with Dinosaurs:
Story: 5/10
Animation: 10/10
Characters: 4/10
Voice Acting: 6/10
Music: 9/10
Overall: 6.8/10. I still didn't think the idea of voiceovers was a good idea.
Watch the Cretaceous Cut, thats the version I saw and it was a great time. No Voice Overs what ever, just a dinosaur documentary.
all this movie needs is to get the footage, edit the music and dialogue on windows movie maker, and BOOM this movie's all better.
Wait a minute if you add 1+10+3 it is 14 divide it by 3 it would have been 4.6 or 5
The reason why Disney Dinosaur (technically) worked more than this film is because it has a better story, more fleshed out characters and the movie knows when to be silent
Damn Hollywood🦖🦕
I felt the same way when I first watched it. BUT. I discovered that the special edition Blue Ray has the option to remove the dialogue! Woohoo!
The shut up edition
1:22
This film should have gotten a 5/10. It got 14 points out of 30, so that would have rounded up to 15/30, and it wouldn't have gotten the Animat Seal of Garbage
Nah, its his review, he can give it whatever he wants, I dont think the animation was even close to rescuing this film
"Actually 14 points means a 5/10, not a 3/10" 🤓
this is similar to the other prehistoric disney movie from 2000, "Dinosaurs"
"Daaah, why are the dinomasaurs not talking?? I saw them talking on Land Before Time 27, and if they don't talk that'll just confuse the kiddies and their mannies. Oh and while we're at it, can we get Sid from Ice Age and Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks for the voices? Yeah, that'll bring in the mannies!"
Exactly what the execs said with that last-minute decision. I appreciate the Cretaceous Cut for actually taking the criticism into concideration.
There’s a Cretaceous cut of film that doesn’t have any dialogue so you can just watch that
so the only reason the movie is not worth watching is the voiceover? just watch the cretaceous edition if you hate the dialogue, that is an option you know. it removes the dialogue
This was your most unfair review. It should have gotten a 5/10. Not biased just how the system works
Happy feet and guardians of whatever, great to know the studio atleast knows how to animate dinosaurs (the only good thing about this movie).
Yeah this wasn't the best year
The worst year of animated movies.
+DRAGOON9908 yeah
2020:thats cute
Little did you know, D(___) Figures The Movie came out that year.
At least we had The Hangover Part 3
A movie based on the TV documentary by bbc that was adapted by 20th century fox
Splendid review. By the way, what was the background music that you used? It sounds majestic and stirring.
- take care, beannacht de duit
I feel like the only reason that this has the same name of the series (which was one of the best dinosaur docs ever) is to get people who loved that series to come see it.
(8:32) The math is incorrect. Technically, this movie gets a 5/10.
It should have been 5
3+10+1=14
14 divided by 3 is 4.6 which rounds up to 5
maybe someday, someone might re-edit this movie, like with The Thief and the Cobbler: the Re-Cobbled cut.
Basically a prehistory version of Thief amd The Cobbler.
GRAND DAD
As someone who has seen the original, and the Allosaurus special, this looks like an insult to Walking With Dinosaurs.
There’s a Korean dinosaur movie very similar to walking with dinosaurs. It’s called The Dino King, also known as Speckles The Tarbosaurus. But the main character is LITERALLY the only one that talks! Plz review that one if you haven’t already 😁
The stupid executive voice and cracked teen voice were the best parts of this review
animat should review the classic 2000 dinosaur film
The version I saw no one was talking the only person who was talking was the voice-over guy
Most of those dinosaurs look pretty good
I enjoyed the movie, I didn't mind the Dialogue, it was the Animation I enjoyed
Anination 10/10 and the movie is 3/10? HOLY CRAP! Wait, for a second I thought I was dreaming that this was not real. Because this is crazy!
0:00 SONG?? PLEASEEEE IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR YEARS
I still enjoyed the ending song.
Take a shot for every animated dinosaur film that was supposed to have no talking but ended up having talking.
you know this movie shouldn't been at 5/10 it 14 points so which mean it gets 5/10
MrSonicFan 12, it should because it’s painfully average.
Whoever added the goofy voices was on drugs
