      LemonPie4Me his opinions sound like the bandwagon opinions. I didn't hear anything unique in there. Not saying you can't hate them, but seriously, not one original thought there. If it wasn't john green, cuz I've seen him on beer and board games on blanesocietyfilms and I know he is genuine here because some of the stuff he talks about there, I would say he was pandering and these aren't his full opinions.

    A bit of trivia, the height limit for the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi was 4'2" . That was because that was the height of the "stunt Ewoks" . My husband was an Ewok and did most of the stunts. He's 4'2" . He's cited in Wookieepedia as Graak..

    Actually you're wrong. The Han Shot First thing is wrong. In the original 1977 release, Greedo does not shoot at all -- Han kills him in cold blood! So the phrase should be, Han ONLY shot.

    Darth Maul, don't have a favorite movie, I like them all. Even the prequels! I think it's easy for people to forget that some of us have very fond memories growing up with the prequels as they did growing up with the original trilogy. I've seen those dozens and dozens of times, and I still love them.

      I believe that Warwick Davis pronounces his name Worr-ik(1), but Wahr-ik(2) and Worr-wick(3) are also fairly common in places. 1 is pretty much the only way you'll hear it in England for names and for the city, I've heard it as 2 in Australia, Warwick, RI is officially pronounced as number 3, but people there use number 2 because of some kind of Rhode Island brain disease related accent.
      All 3 are correct, number 1 is "The King's English"

    I have a half-baked theory on the last point, there's the whole thing about the biblical aspects surrounding Star Wars ('may the force be with you' and all that) and in the bible there's this passage: 'And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee'. You could say Luke losing his hand is a good reminder from then on of his bad state of mind for what he was facing

    Glad to hear SOMEONE out there still thinks TFA is amazing and exactly what it should have been :P Getting real tired of this weird obsession with it being nothing but a nostalgia-grab for '77 SW fans. Oh sure and A New Hope was just a nostalgia grab for Flash Gordon fans.

    • @pennymac16
      @pennymac16 7 років тому +1

      Honestly, there are some convincing reviews out there which show how TFA is not much more than nostalgia grabbing. Personally, I am now intrigued as to whether Episode VIII will redeem TFA because there are so many questions that could be answered in a way that would make it a brilliant feat of story telling. On the same note, it could also turn out to making the whole story make even less sense than already.

      I think it'll depend on the two upcoming sequels. I'm having a hard time getting my thought across. Good sequels can take the events of 7 and run with it, giving it layers and meaning or they can merely be cash-grabs =)

    Favorite character in the prequels: Darth Maul.
    Favorite character in the original trilogy: Leia Organa.
    Favorite character in The Force Awakens: BB-8 or Finn or Rey, it's probably a three-way tie.
    Favorite character in Rogue One: It's between Cassian Andor and Orson Krennic. I also like Jyn Erso and Galen Erso and the rest of the motley band of rebels quite a bit. And K-2SO, of course.
    Favorite Star Wars movie: The Empire Strikes Back. But A New Hope, Rogue One, and The Force Awakens aren't far behind.

    • @TheSasquatchy
      @TheSasquatchy 7 років тому +7

      TheJaredtheJaredlong Thats why the original trilogy was better than the prequels, his wife Maria Lucas, was an editor with active input on IV-VI and actively shot down his bad ideas. Not so for I-III. In fact, she is the only Lucas to win an Academy Award for any of the films - for Best Film Editing the original Star Wars in 1977.

    My favorite person in the original 1977 release of Star Wars is Charles Lippincott. Want to know how Star Wars got advertised, how the toy rights worked, and how the comic books got involved. Thats your man right there. He single handedly set all of that up. When Lucas found out though the two had a major falling out over money and Charles did not return for any of the other movies.

  • @KaiCalimatinus

    I actually choked up and later really liked Chewie just going past them, as though he has his own way of internalising things. Having known him for so long, he might not have actually been closer to Han than Leia was, but Chewie maybe felt he was, and Rey didn't know him all that well, so He might have taken slight and just dug his heels in with an "I have things to do.'" attitude.
    Now, if they don't use that in the next one and have him break down or struggle to come to terms with it, that will be a major mistake to me.

    • @ShinyGoldBacon
      @ShinyGoldBacon 7 років тому +4

      I can buy this take on it, but I still would have liked to see Chewie and Leia at least give each other a look of sad acknowledgement before walking on past each other. Or maybe Leia tries to lightly brush his arm to get his attention, but still he refuses to look at her. Just something to show he'd rather be alone at that point.

      Reviews such as those by RedLetterMedia make good cases on how the prequel movies individually are bad pieces of cinema. I have come across a compelling theory on the metastory of the first six episodes, however, which I think at least give the prequels that.

    Cloud city, as a setting and as a character. As for the best lightsaber fight, again, cloud city followed closely by the last fight between Luke and Vader. All the other fights are meant to look like real masters, but it comes across as a fancy dance-off plus laserswords. The cloud city fight come across so much more like two guys tearing the place apart and genuinely trying to murder each other. Fights are ugly, not dancy.

    Come to think of it the "now I am Vader" twist is kinda like what they did with Kylo Ren in Episode 8. He helped Rey take down Snoke and then made himself the new Supreme Leader of the First Order in Snoke's place.
    Also, fave character is Padmé. Fave movie, not sure (though as you can see, I don't hate the prequels).

    Saying which is my favorite is always a bit difficult for me. I love Empire strikes back and it is probably the most enjoyable to watch. However, I really have to say a New Hope is my favorite cause it was the first-- the first movie I watched and the thing that really set me down the path of nerd-ism. Seriously, my childhood was not easy and if it hadn't been for things like Star Wars and comic books that really allowed me to escape mentally I'm not sure I would have made it out with my sanity intact.

    I think my favorite is probably, and I know I'll get hate for it, Revenge of the Sith, more for the memories attached to it - I got to go see it in theaters, just me and my dad which is rare in my family, and it's intense and full of this growing sort of "I know it has to happen but I don't want it to!" sense about Anakin. That being said, my favorite character is a three way tie between Leia, Han and Padme.

    I will never understand why someone as intelligent as John can call TFA 'near perfect'

    • @rjgd99
      @rjgd99 7 років тому +1

      Well I mean you can quite objectively say that TFA is a sub-standard Star Wars film, but sure, we can agree to disagree

    • @StarWarsomania
      @StarWarsomania 7 років тому +1

      I know! TFA was a horrible movie that made almost no sense, and implied many better stories in the intervening years between RotJ and TFA I would have much rather seen.

    • @rjgd99
      @rjgd99 7 років тому +1

      OK, let me rephrase that, sorry. TFA is quite objectively a sub-standard Star Wars film, as there is a general consensus amongst truly intellectual REAL Star Wars fans that the movie is terrible.
      You say 2-3 of the Star Wars films aren't very good. Are you really trying to tell me that TFA is better than the likes of the Revenge of the Sith? Even expanding to Attack of the Clones and I suppose the whole story arc includes The Phantom Menace. Whilst yes, there is a lot of mechanical error with the prequels, and some of the dialogue is below-par, and Jar Jar is just cancerous, you cannot deny the superiority this trilogy has above TFA and most other film series. The Emperor's successful concealment as the SUPREME CHANCELLOR, for so long, as well as his use of manipulation and his intelligence to gain power, all the while leading the Jedi into a massive trap. The Jedi are probably the most powerful collective 'race' in the universe and the Emperor manages to outdo the lot of them, pretty much by himself. THAT is a real villain, with a real plot. Not to mention the development we see of Anakin into Darth Vader and the way his character changes, and the subtle transition of Obi-Wan into a more Alec Guinness style. You cannot tell you didn't love Ewan McGregor's portrayal of Obi-Wan. As for the criticisms of Hayden Christensen. Whilst he is not the greatest actor out there, he is neither the worst. He did the best with what he got and played his part as well as he could have. It is more the fault of the script than his own, think of his 'I hate you' line on the banks of Mustafar, tell me that wasn't magnificent acting. Now we come to TFA. A plot directly copy and pasted from Episode 4, yet done so so badly. All it is a remake but with a bigger death star. There is no explanation how the good side are suddenly 'rebels' again, even though the Sith were overthrown and the Republic returned at the end of Return of the Jedi. The villain, Kylo Ren is so bad I don't know whether to laugh or cry. He is shown to be so extremely powerful at the start of the movie, holding a blaster bolt in midair, but when it comes to actually fighting Rey or doing anything else for that matter, he's just terrible. He's mean to be highly trained, wanting to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, which is weird, because you would think he would know that Darth Vader destroyed the Sith. Rey is unlikable and her acting is god-awful. She can suddenly perform Jedi mind tricks with 0 training and not even knowing fully she can use the force. Seems legit. She manages to fight off this supposedly powerful Sith Lord, when she has never even used a lightsaber or anything like it before. No. Should not be happening. Finn, an autistic person who is just in the film for the sake of it. He keeps changing his mind every 10 seconds, and he means nothing in the end as Rey turns out to be the main protagonist. Han Solo was killed off purely for effect. In summary a terrible movie, and not comparable to the original trilogy, and even the prequels.

    • @rjgd99
      @rjgd99 7 років тому

      The reason I said the intellectual thing was because it takes someone who has the mental capacity as well as love for Star Wars to look past the editorial/production flaws of the prequels to appreciate them for what they're meant to be. It wasn't a dig at your intelligence level.
      No matter the acting or specific bits of dialogue, it's a great trilogy and tells the story of Anakin Skywalker so so well, and you know it does because you really felt emotion when you see him turn to the dark side, or when he takes his first breath in the suit. As for 'horrible characters', only one I can really think of is Jar Jar, and even he had a massive purpose in the plot, as well as being appealing to younger children, who believe it or not, do find him funny. And we must remember, that the trilogy started in 1999, where although things had advanced greatly in cinema, they didn't have anywhere near the capabilities of the producers of TFA.
      You're right, the characters in the prequels are truly great, even beyond the ones you've listed, and you do not see this in TFA. Do you have anywhere near the same attachment to Obi-Wan, Anakin or even Padme as you do to the likes of Rey or Finn, or Count Dooku compared to Kylo Ren? No. Nowhere near. The characters I felt most attached to in TFA were from the original trilogy, one of which was killed off purely for effect.
      I said Kylo was a Sith as I was trying to reinforce my comparison between him and Darth Vader, especially seeing as he wants to be like him so much. I was just making the comparison starker, my bad. Whether he was FULLY trained or not, he was still highly trained in the Dark Side. He is extremely strong with the force as we see with the blaster bolt, and his ability to use mind tricks/control to torture. It can be seen that Kylo has a very distinct fighting style (you can watch a UA-cam video about this) which means he must have been trained to a decent level with a lightsaber.
      As for Rey. She did not have any official 'martial training'. She probably did become experienced fighting with her staff given the environment she lived in, yes but that means nothing when it comes to fighting with a lightsaber, a completely different weapon, and not something you can simply adapt your fighting style with a staff to. She used silly stabbing movements most of the time and clearly had no idea what she was doing. Even if she did have the relevant training, I think it's safe to say that Kylo would have had more. Not to mention his far superior knowledge of the force compared to Rey, who, let's be honest, should not have been able to use her power at all. As for Rey remaining calm? She showed just as much emotion as Kylo did, even more. If you saw her reaction after he killed Han Solo, you would know that she was fuelled by her emotions at this point, as well as her expressions during the duel, if you can call it that.
      Now to debunk the bullshit about Kylo Ren. Yes his strength balanced between light and dark, but he killed his father in order to full embrace the Dark Side, therefore consolidating his power where it belongs. Even if he was 'at his weakest' he should still have been able to defeat Rey, someone who had never held a lightsaber before and had nowhere near the knowledge of the force that he did. He dealt with Finn so easily, using the force and his lighsaber efficiently, and it was quite easy in the end, which is kinda weird because Storm troopers would have received melee training in all forms. And this was also after being hit by the bow-caster. Why couldn't he use the force against Rey properly? If he had done the same to her as he had to Finn it would have been over. There's no reason for him not to. He just didn't beat her because the plot willed it. Because Jar Jar Abrams was too stupid to think up any real, original plot that made sense.
      It's quite clear to see that Abrams was relying on his copy-paste version of Episode 4 to bring in the money and fool reminiscent Star Wars fans who didn't like the prequels. He used some of the same direct imagery and virtually the exact same plot, and this fooled a lot of Star Wars fans into loving it, because they did not possess either the mental capacity or the knowledge about Star Wars as a whole to know any different. I feel so sorry for those kids whose first Star Wars film TFA is. He played an extremely safe card, and got a return on it from those to ignorant see past the facade of what he's really up to. I wonder what will happen in the next films now that they might actually have to make their own plot, unless they continue to copy episodes 5+6.

      I just explained why that argument is invalid. All force users are influenced by their emotions to a certain extent. You think Obi Wan and Anakin weren't influenced in their duel? The Dark Side use their anger/hate to fuel their power. Are they not emotions? Besides, if you actually watch the scene you can tell easily that both of them are channelling their emotions quite aggressively. Still no excuse for him to lose, even if what you say it true. He should be far advanced with a lightsaber, compared to Rey, who, as I have had explained, shouldn't have had a clue what she was doing. It says a lot about the movie that you cannot actually counter the points I make without repeating the arguments I have already refuted.
      I don't care how it 'makes me sound', it's the truth and both you and I know it.

    Although "The Empire Strikes Back" may be a better movie, nothing will match the feeling of seeing the story of "A New Hope" unfold; it was for me the perfect visualisation of the many pulp science fiction stories I had read as a kid. When I saw it, it was just "Star Wars" and I had no idea that more would come. It was perfect and complete and amazing, the essence of space opera finally made into a movie that got it all right.

    This wasn't just to make the sets harder to find, but it also was to prevent the film being gouged by the owners of locations. If they called it Star Wars, the people who owned places like the forest that eventually became Edor would assume the film had a bottomless budget and would charge more for the rights to use the location, while they would charge far less for a tiny film no one ever heard of.
