    Man Queen Victoria was such a trendsetter. I mean helping popularize tea parties, wearing a white dress/gown to get married, celebrating Christmas the way we do (big decorated pine tree, exchanging gifts, etc.).
    Also, if you get invited to high tea at a fancy hotel, I highly recommend it. I went to one in Boston with my family last Christmas and it was great!

      When my dads ex girlfriend's family came to visit the USA from India, they were also unfamiliar with iced tea. I was surprized that they dont have iced tea in india because they drink a lot of tea there and it's hot so I thought they would ice it sometimes. If anyone reads this who is from india, do you drink iced tea?

    In much of the US, to people and tea shoppes (who should know better), "tea" is any kind of dried leaf or rose hips or who knows what soaked in water, and "chai" is tea with a LOAD of strong spices added.

      True...when I make iced tea at home ( my "southern iced tea " family heirloom traditional way) I use 12 black tea bags in a guard of water , bring to a rolling boil, let sit 5 mins.put 1-1/2 cups sugar in a gallon container and pour hot tea into it..squeezing out bags with a spoon.i stir the hot tea/ sugar up to dissolve in container.Then I fill, squeeze out (rinsing teabags) 3 time total into it sugar mix 2 more time w clean water.Stir up and add water from tap to make up the gallon.The whole point is to still be able to taste the flavor of the Tea especially when plenty of ice is used in the glass, bc it will get watered down.It is so great freshly made and on a hot day I can down 2 or 3 glasses in a row.If you put in the fridge it will get cloudy and sweeter when cold.Add a sprig of garden mint and yay!Tip: if your iced tea mix become foamy when stirring add 1/2 tsp baking soda to dissipate the foam.

      +Pratyush Srivastava many Americans know quite a bit about tea. That being said, the blends used to make tea meant to be consumed cold are different than the ones meant to be served hot so many "American" brands taste terrible as hot tea because they aren't really designed for that use. Hot tea is not something Americans drink in public at anywhere near the same rate as cold tea so it can be quite difficult to get good hot tea in this country when out.

      I was really non plussed when I returned to live here (Scotland) however, because I would put the kettle on and go do something only to find the kettle boiled and cooling by the time I got back. It took me a while to retune to British kettle speeds; due to different electricity system here, kettles are much quicker.

    I drink an enormous amount of tea, although I'm not as particular as Lennon about preparation. Having dealt with boil-water advisories and lousy tap water, I recommend keeping some tea in your emergency/camping kit to make bleach-treated or stale emergency water palatable.

    I unknowingly drank Pu-erh tea for most of my life under the guise that it was standard ol' "Chinese Tea" (technically it is, but what we Westerners know as Chinese Tea is generally jasmine flavoured white or green tea, which every place serves). That restaurant switched to Jasmine about 3 years ago and I was so disappointed, they were the only place that would by default serve Pu-erh when you asked for tea.. Fortunately, you can request it at most Yum Cha restaurants, and it's easy to find at Asian grocers. You don't have to spend big bucks for the high grade cakes (the longer aged, the more $$$), a tin of loose leaf generally will set you back a smidgen more than other varieties. Pu-erh is pretty much liquid red gold.

    Definitely a Lennon... similarly particular about how it's made, too... I will notice if the bag's in after the hot water because it comes out weak and watery regardless of how long you steep it.... Properly, you should warm the pot and your cup prior to brewing and pouring, too....

    #37: in Australia the word Tea is commonly used in place of the word Dinner in regular conversation. making the phrase tea-time = dinner-time. and yes this has been known to cause confusion when talking to non-Australians

    Regarding #7: We do know why the sound of the name changed. It's called the Great Vowel Shift.

      +Cíat Ó Gáibhtheacháin etymonline.com/index.php?term=tea&allowed_in_frame=0
      The Great Vowel Shift took place around 1350-1600. As you can tell from the link, "tea" entered the English language (first spelled "tay") in the 1650s, after the Shift was complete. Then by the min 1700s had changed to it's modern pronunciation.
      It's not a bad guess, the Great Vowel Shift, but the dates don't match.

    • @talideon
      @talideon 8 років тому

      R Dreher Not quite. The problem here is *late mergers*. There were certain shifts that happened during the second phase of the GVS that happened unevenly across the English speaking world, only settling in the 1700s. The particular vowels were those in words like 'meat', 'mate', 'day' and 'meet', which includes that in 'tea'. 'Tea' was borrowed' into English at just the right time to also be subject to GVS late mergers.
      So no, it's not a guess. It's just me remembering part of the GVS that most people forget or leave out because it doesn't line up cleanly with the conventional end date of 1600.

    • @rdreher7380
      @rdreher7380 8 років тому

      Cíat Ó Gáibhtheacháin Ah, your probably right. I refreshed myself a bit on the topic, and yeah, it's probably just a later merger, analogous to meat and meet.
      I guess we should look a little more into Mental Floss's claim that "we don't know exactly when or why it changed." Historical Linguistics is always full of uncertainty and dispute, so maybe they simplified something they researched. Maybe it was out of date or incomplete. Anyway, yeah it is a bit of a blunder on their part.

    I once went to a tea house in China. They served miniscule quantities of tea in tiny cups over a long period of time in overly ceremonious manners and charged a lot of money. People who get overly fancy about tea... they're just imagining things in their head and projecting that onto their taste buds.

    • @KaiCalimatinus

    There's a guy I work with who will use at least three tea bags if not more when he's making a cup of tea. His reasoning is that the more tea bags you have, the more cancer it fights. I think he means prevents because he doesn't have cancer, but either way I'm pretty sure tea does not "fight" cancer no matter how many tea bags you use.
