As an integral part of Spain they have political functions that wish to secede though not a majority. Spain is a strange country and has several cultural regions including the Basque Country. Armed confrontation is not the answer to subjugate a people is wrong. China did this to Tibet, this was wrong. Catalonia will navigate the process and if a majority express the desire to be independent of Spain then they will. Scotland has the same issues and a referendum was held to decide to secede from the UK but the majority expressed a wish to remain - by voting. A civilised way. Chinas threats to invade and attack Taiwan are very very wrong.
