"I Don't Wanna Be Known As A High School Legend" What Happened To KYREE WALKER? Stunted Growth

  • Today’s feature I can still remember having some of the craziest high school freshman mixtapes on UA-cam, and in of them you could tell he was much bigger, faster and more talented than his class. Without knowing his true age at the time, I thought, wow, this kid looks to be the next phenomenon in basketball or a least a prospect worth keeping an eye on. Fast forward from the day I first saw him play to now and things has gone totally opposite than as planned and you ask yourself why? How did this player much more advanced than the kids on the floor with him basically not take a step in the right direction since then. He was once quoted saying "I Don't Want To Be Known As a High School Legend" But in the end, that's exactly what he may be remembered as. Can Kyree Walker Make the NBA? What Happened To KYREE WALKER? Stunted Growth

This probably the fist video I seen on me in the last 2 years. It made me laugh honestly. I mean no disrespect to anyone but why everyone gotta say something about my career and what I did. I’m not perfect person. Things happen in my life I wish it never happened, but I live with my choices. I’m only 21 man. I got long career in front of me. When I make it to the league a lot of people can’t say shit. I’m just blessed man.

I remember when I was a kid (37 now) you had to be REALLY good to get noticed. Played in the ABCD camp and got toasted by truly elite talent. Now UA-cam makes every kid a star by making highlight reels in lay up lines. it's too easy to be overrated

“Just be a high school legend”
I’d take it. HS legend gets you enough clout to go D1 and get drafted. ESPN gave him an 81 Grade and 14 offers. Sitting out a senior season, then choosing to just “train for the draft” was just the wrong route.
He goes to a D1 gets more exposure, coaching and structure even for a season, you can get drafted off that.

UA-cam was/is the best or worst thing that happened to a lot of these kids I would see video titles like the best 6th grader in the world, or the best this, most athletic this. They are all highlights, click bait sometimes you fall in love with the lights and don't do the work. Which leads to a lack of fundamentals, team play etc. If he was training for the league his conditioning looks terrible. Whoever was training him needed to address this.. I'm not sure, but if he was 19 turning 20, some states won't let you play HS/Prep ball.. appreciate this one

The greatest thing adults can bring to kids is perspective. A broader more nuanced way of looking at the world around him. This kid clearly had none of that because he couldn't see that the world keeps spinning while you're taking years off from hooping. The saddest part was he actually thought he was going to get drafted, when he wasn't on any board and hadn't been mentioned by anyone - but because he had no perspective all he saw was what he experienced. And now he's another year older and there's another crop of young talent sweeping past him and he never got the perspective to see it coming.

Facts, but he still could/should. Imagine G-League vlogs documenting the struggles of pursuing an NBA opportunity, especially in the era of two-ways deals & so many high schoolers (& even foreigners) making a jump to the G-League. As much opportunity as it presents to young players, it make it that much more difficult to stick in the league. The NBA moves at light speed. It’s insane.

These HS rankings is a popularity show and so is loading up these AAU teams. Having the wrong people in your corner can really hurt more than everything else. Looks like he was taught to get buckets and do nothing more. Don't rebound definitely don't defend and forget FT shooting just get buckets. Everyone please take note. Just because someone is older than you & loves you doesn't mean they know what is best for you & you should do. Never just take what one person wants you to do & do it without question. Hell list your options, take advice from loved ones but then also other trusted individuals take on it. Your coach, a youth leader in your community. He'll a former player who looked to have it all but then featured on stunted growth & see where it went wrong for him.

@@FLValentino No, he was welcomed back to GS the next season, but he didn’t want to prove himself by beating out Nick Young, decided to disappear until the team released him, Cavs (crappy team) got rid of him after one week, played even less with TOR during their championship run, got a better opportunity via Covid season and yet they got rid of him and now is in the G league. He seemed comfy just going off his given talent. Didn’t see him getting much better from frosh year in hs. Anything but humble. Could have been like jalen brown also from the atl as he kinna had a similar attacking the basket game, but for all those reasons stunted. Dude was also grossly overrated/hyped by those dunk vids imo. He was a dunker, but lacked a great all around game. Took plays off. Could have slimmed down. Only so much you can use your body when peers catch up physical wise & you don’t improve.

As memory serves Jameer wasn’t hyped. He was a four year player who stacked up awards pre big 1 and done era. He was also undersized. His biggest selling point was you’re getting a guy who can run an offense and who had a good game, not a superstar.
Goes out of the lottery, almost gets a ring, goes to an all-star game, and sticks around for nearly 15 season and is now an exec.
If anything he’s a guy who didn’t have a stunt but outplayed his potential.

Kyree really wasn't a high school legend - he was more of a middle school AAU legend because he was playing against kids half his size in many cases. He only had one really good year of high school ball when he was a freshman at Moreau Catholic in Hayward leading them to the state finals. It was kind of down hill from there when he went the prep school route but not sure it would have turned out differently if he would have stayed at Moreau Catholic but I guess we'll never know.
