It's obvious that he's a reviewer of popular music just like many other in this field, he rationalizes his opinions and has some sort of fanbase to make it visible that this album is hated and the other one is loved. Summarizing, he's more of a music nerd rather than actual critic who except doing reviews educates himself on music theory, the arts and humanities so important in understanding paradigm and musical landscape. If he did that, he'd stop wasting his and viewers' time on half-baked, low effort, imitative music and beefs between celebrities.

Guys like Brad and Anthony fall into the same category for me. Like many other reviewers, when it situates them they take the high ground and present their opinions like it’s fact, which is why many people take their preferences as a principle for good music. But when they get criticized or pushed back on, they argue “I’m just some guy with an opinion” and I’m not really about that.
Neither of them take their opinion as a fact imo. As a long time viewer of Anthony it never really felt like he wanted you to have his exact opinion or even agree with him. He's just really good at putting his opinion into words (because it's his jobs) and a lot of people can't think for themselves so they just repeat after him. Personally i loved albums he hated. I disliked albums he liked. And I don't always agree with his opinion. But i think he's a great reviewer with a pretty interesting taste.
I've been watching his reviews for 7 years now, and don't remember him presenting his opinions as facts. While enjoyment of music is primarily subjective, he just shifts his attention to qualitative and quantifiable aspects of music because there can be no constructive discussion without these. Many people take his preferences as principles of good music because he can thoughtfully argue them, and to be fair he does know more about music than the average person. It's not like he adds nothing to the discourse. I've never seen him weasel out of his positions either, he's been faithful to his postion on MBDTF for years now. More recently, he received backlash for the high score he gave SexyRed's album, and he never resorted to the "I'm just a guy on the internet approach." While he doesn't take him self too seriously, he is very much aware of his influence. Imo, people that are usually worried about others opinion about things they enjoy, coming off as "facts" tend to be insecure about their own opinions. No one's forcing you to like or dislike a piece of art. You make that choice.

This video is misleading in a couple of places to push a narrative about fantano.
1. He doesn’t go after Kanyes wife, he defends her against the way Kanye speaks about her in the album, and on social media.
2. He gave Kanye a 10 in 2018 for Kids See Ghosts. And also an 8 for Donda in 2020. He doesn’t just hate for no reason, he does give him good scores if the albums are “good”.
3. He is allowed to be open about his opinions on artists, especially when they are as successful as Drake. He isn’t just bashing him for no reason, he criticises music he didn’t enjoy. He is a critic. That’s what he does.
4. Drake began by sending him a nasty DM, he is well within his right to make Drake look stupid because his actions were completely unnecessary.
5. Missing out Tyler’s later scores is unfair, and seems like an effort to paint fantano as being Harsh for the sake of harsh. He isn’t just bullying an artist. He praised Tyler when his music improved with good scores. (Flower boy onwards)

@@demi172 In academic music community everybody treats him as a joke. Fantano's youtube activity is in majority low effort short videos for people with fried attention span and memes for teenagers. It's obvious that he's a reviewer of popular music just like many other in this field, he rationalizes his opinions and has some sort of fanbase to make it visible that this album is hated and the other one is loved. Summarizing, he's more of a music nerd rather than actual critic who except doing reviews educates himself on music theory, the arts and humanities so important in understanding paradigm and musical landscape. If he did that, he'd stop wasting his and viewers' time on half-baked, low effort, imitative music and beefs between celebrities.

Guys like Brad and Anthony fall into the same category for me. Like many other reviewers, when it situates them they take the high ground and present their opinions like it’s fact, which is why many people take their preferences as a principle for good music. But when they get criticized or pushed back on, they argue “I’m just some guy with an opinion” and I’m not really about that.
Neither of them take their opinion as a fact imo. As a long time viewer of Anthony it never really felt like he wanted you to have his exact opinion or even agree with him. He's just really good at putting his opinion into words (because it's his jobs) and a lot of people can't think for themselves so they just repeat after him. Personally i loved albums he hated. I disliked albums he liked. And I don't always agree with his opinion. But i think he's a great reviewer with a pretty interesting taste.
I've been watching his reviews for 7 years now, and don't remember him presenting his opinions as facts. While enjoyment of music is primarily subjective, he just shifts his attention to qualitative and quantifiable aspects of music because there can be no constructive discussion without these. Many people take his preferences as principles of good music because he can thoughtfully argue them, and to be fair he does know more about music than the average person. It's not like he adds nothing to the discourse. I've never seen him weasel out of his positions either, he's been faithful to his postion on MBDTF for years now. More recently, he received backlash for the high score he gave SexyRed's album, and he never resorted to the "I'm just a guy on the internet approach." While he doesn't take him self too seriously, he is very much aware of his influence. Imo, people that are usually worried about others opinion about things they enjoy, coming off as "facts" tend to be insecure about their own opinions. No one's forcing you to like or dislike a piece of art. You make that choice.
