Every pop artist is basically an "industry plant" - they literally take lessons on how to dress, act, perform, and interview. The label decides which artists they want to promote the most. The label controls the amount of publicity their artists get. Everyone buys views online and wants to generate internet "buzz" for artists. The whole thing is a big business with a lot of money on the line. Why do you think so many of the famous pop stars are former Disney kids? They have been training to be "artists" since they were young, with the help of teams of people behind them.

It wasn't a secret back then though. Groups would be openly marketed as the new offering from Motown. This is different because having cred is so important to fans buying into the story and the image.
Motown had to really actually focus on image tho being Black during those times without image training etc they wouldn’t stand a mainstream chance. It’s not the same as todays artist
i think that is mostly manufactured by their labels, from image, marketing, sound production etc.. but now the labels allow their artist to co produce the songs.. IDk, and their company/labels reputation plays a lot of roles of pushing their group at forefront

I think people just call rappers they don't like "Industry plants" because they become oversaturated with everyone playing their music and they aren't likeable as people. Like if we had Lil Pump in his prime debuted today rather than 2016 people would quickly call him a industry plant because he is a kid who showed up out of nowhere and became a mega star within just a year despite lyrically being nowhere near as good as others in his field and just being a douchebag who does anything for attention.
A musician or a singer at least needs to have some sort of obvious potential and somewhat of an audience in order to be signed. Someone like J.Cole is a good example, Cole was signed to RocNation because he showed great potential and already had a impressive following online back in 2009/2010.
@@shriderrad4123J. Cole isn’t an industry plant; he already had a following. Likewise, I wouldn’t call Nicki Minaj, Mac Miller, Justin Bieber, Mac DeMarco, Juice Wrld, etc. plants either. They just built their following online first before they got signed. Manufactured industry plants definitely exist though (Sex Pistols, Kris Kross from the 90s, and Aaron Carter are very good examples of this). The difference is that some industry plants are genuinely talented enough to build and maintain their own followings after, or even further develop as an artist. Industry plants like Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift - whose parents literally paid her way into the industry, Katy Perry, and yes, Billie Eilish fall into this category (notice they’re more likely to be female because labels prioritize image/looks over skill for female artists, unfortunately). I personally don’t see being an industry plant as the same as being a fraud. You could’ve been scouted, had rich parents, or given connections early on and ended up doing the most with it. I get though why to some people it seems unearned or underserved, especially compared to those who were underground or had to build a following first before being discovered.

Low key feel like there was some reaching with Billie. The two statement on Ocean Eyes weren’t all that different & they’ve always been honest about Finneas writing & producing a lot of the songs. Some are more Billie influenced & it’s quite obvious which are hers vs his. What I believe happened is Finneas tried to make a name for himself but it wasn’t working out. So, he enlisted his sister to act as a duo & found success that way. It was easier for them because of their parents being in the industry & Finneas likely having established music connections from trying to make it on his own.

I just knew the narrative was that she's a member of a talented and well connected family. But I do think she exaggerated her parents being nobodies. I'm sure she thinks they're nobodies. @@dahliacheung6020 I know plenty of poor people who were homeschooled 😂 And correct, you don’t even know her parents - they are nobodies. Obviously her brother and parents helped her. @@ManifestingMariah No, it takes marketing and that's all it takes. Usually artists got signed by small indie labels (which have now gone pretty much extinct), got a little exposure from touring with bigger acts and then maybe get signed by big labels and get more famous. A great example of an industry plant is someone like Baby Goth or Jumex. However, it doesn’t help the industry plant allegations when the artist also doesn’t take part in any of the production value and is handed a script, only to utilize their vocals.

So...they pick some creative looking kid and make them become someone they aren't for the fame of it all. Without skills or will...these kids do what they are told, and that's always nice. if we are using the term industry plant then i'd say billie ellish is an industry plant as she was basically born and raised for that lifestyle. her parents getting her into music from a young age, a successful producer brother to make her songs for her, signing to a label from her first song at age 13, etc. she's not really doing anything it's her family working with the label pulling all the strings and she's just a puppet. at 13 years old she probably didn't even know what a record label is i imagine the parents handled the label stuff. so being born into that life has allowed her to speed to the top. but i don't think we should be annoyed with her i think it's the people around her we should be blaming. i don't believe parents should raise and condition their child to be a superstar. i can't prove that's what her parents did but wouldn't surprise me as there are a lot of parents that do. parents that want their child to be a superstar one day so they start conditioning them and preparing them from day one then when they reach their early teens the parents go hard on trying to get them into talent competitions, getting them heard by labels, etc.
I think people confuse the term “industry plant” with simply just seizing an opportunity. It’s like networking to potential get a job offer. That’s essentially what Billie and Finneas did. The term “industry plant” is often associated with calling an artist untalented and lacking skills. However, Billie has shown through her vision, artistry, musical voice and earned awards that she is very talented. No amount of support from her label could have done that for her. Also, finneas helps her with her music but it’s still her music. Plenty of popular artists in the industry have a plethora of ghost writers, producers, engineers. It just so happens that finneas whom is her brother that she has a close relationship with, collaborates with her and is her primary resource for developing her creative project. Example: Elvis Presley who is dubbed the king of rock n Roll, didn’t write the majority of his music, especially any of his popular songs. That being said, people can call Billie an industry plant all they want, but they can’t deny talent. If she were just a product of the industry and nothing else then she would have fallen off a while ago just like “industry plants” in the past.
All the innocents feeling outraged about nepotism & industry involvement are so precious, it's like they think it's something new. By this logic, all performers are industry plants. It's the way the entertainment industry has worked since silent movies and the invention of marketing.

This is coming from someone who doesn’t even really like Billie as a person. Compare her to someone like Jaden smith lol
The Iann Dior situation is amusing to me. People are suspecting him because he used a Nick Mira beat? Nick Mira churns out beats daily and sells them. Anyone could purchase a Nick Mira beat, especially during the "romance361" era when they were more affordable and accessible. I understand other criticisms, but Iann Dior simply chose the right beats, emulated a certain style, and networked effectively. Besides, Internet Money was considered an underground label at the time. It's a pointless debate.
Billie has an iconic unique voice. If all she’s good for is that, along with her personality and style, of course her success has been earned and is truly loved
Ice spice just throws around her gyatt while making mediocre music and people love it. says more about the people listening to her than herself to be honest.
Ocean Eyes was also going to have a feature from Katy Perry. It's obvious her parents set that up, but Katy declined bc she didn't know Billie (this was b4 she was popular or released anything).
The term industry plant cannot be applied to iann dior. Internet money has picked up nobodies and tried to build them a career countless times. iann was never portrayed as independent, he just had the talent to blow up in a period when TikTok wasn't a thing.
people are too sympathetic toward industry plants imo. it dosen't matter if they've 'worked hard' to have industry connections, because the problem is that they're putting that energy into finding people to create a brand for them instead of art itself. they don't have their own vision for a sound or have artistic goals, because if they genuinely did, the fame and success won't matter. people make art for the sake of it regardless if it's seen or not. if you had to finesse your way into finding powerful people before you've even made any art then you're not an artist. letting these fame-hungry people have the spotlight takes those valuable opportunities away from all the struggling underground artists who do have something new to offer to music. any musician knows that artists irl are very stingy with who they let mess with their sound. i don't believe any genuine artist would let an industry exec change their sound 10 times over and be okay with it.

The whole part about Billie not writing her own music is really distasteful. It’s perfectly fine to not like someone’s music or even disrespect their upbringing- but I find it really appalling that to criticize Eilish you have to stoop so low as to say that she has no artistry due to not writing (which isn’t even entirely true for all her music as she’s at least been writing songs after Ocean Eyes) It’s obvious she’s an industry plant and/or nepo baby. With that, her longstanding success is also due to her output generally being good
i think the billie argument is a bit weak.. any beyonce song has like 20 writers on it. no one says shes not a talent. also those two interviews where the song was made for a dance sound the same to me with only some nuance. which happens when recalling something
I'm 58, my dad was a radio DJ in the'60s and '70s, and nothing here is new except for some changes in distribution of content and wealth. The few artists in the business with any talent are writing everybody else's stuff. Having parents who work in the entertainment industry is appealing to starmakers because it means they can do business with you.
Billie has always said her & Finneas wrote together. She's always given him his flowers. Sounds like a bunch of ppl are jealous, esp that Progress dude...sorry,don't know him, but he genuinely seems jealous AF lol (& I don't mean just jealous of Billie)
People are overreacting to the Billie situation. When she said she "made" a song, technically she did contribute-those are her vocals. She collaborates with Finneas on lyrics and sings harmonies. Despite her privileged background, she's talented and has pushed boundaries in mainstream music alongside her brother. Also, Finneas is her producer and brother, of course their music sounds similar. When signing a deal, connections may play a role, but not every singer needs to be a songwriter (shocking). Think of legends like Frank Sinatra and Elvis (and SOOO many more)-they didn't write their songs. Even if Billie doesn't contribute to songwriting, her exceptional voice and popular catalog speak for themselves, so I don't see a big problem. Who cares if she's a industry plant if she releases good music and can sing well? I'm not the biggest Billie fan, but it's common sense, really. EDIT: Just saw the end of the video, which is basically my point. Another Fantano W.
I can't stand billiy eilish, to say we all artists are sad just sounds stupid and pretentious, just because she thinks that's a cool thing to say it doesn't make it any true and there she is, talking like she knows better than anyone... and the more I listen to her the less I like her, to say it's impossible to make someone successful through industry is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard, that's exactly how it works for most of the popular artists, you get your music played everywhere so people end up memorizing it and liking it because the industry also cared for the music to have a nice production, a catching melody and a pretty boy or girl singing it, that woman is so cynical btw, all those prizes are part of the marketing campagin, she doesn't fool anyone with a brain
bro said the same thing twice. "Billie put it out for her dance teacher, but she also said she recorded it for dance." There's no contracdiction. Only poor reading comprehension

Billie I think had the inside track to be "Discovered" where others have bots and corporate manipulation pushing the perception of popularity hoping group think takes hold despite limited talent. As you showed Billie seems to have real popularity and the accolades.
Basically, geopolitical news has been choreographed for decades since the inception of tv, radio and theater productions began. With that said, this is why the music-industrial-complex does this and it is nothing new. For example, The Monkees of the 1960's were just that, industry plants. Also the controversy surrounding The Beatles in the 1960s is worth mentioning when discussing industry plants since just like anything else, the in-your-face media controls the narrative. That also leads me to this part of your video [when Billie says 07:20 ]. It is no secret that since its inception to large audiences, music puts its listeners into a simple trance-like state by using various frequencies like 440mhz, that make people more emotional and thus creating a faux bond between the artists and their viewers. So that is why she gets that type of following she speaks about.
Billie isn't a plant. Her brother couldn't even break into being in a fucking boyband that was already signed. She may have had an easier time because of her brother's connections, but they were weak to the point of he gave up. They still write everything together, and they're very public about that. People are really splitting hairs over Oceans Eyes because she can't remember if she was 13 or 14 when she recorded the vocals. Her parents were, respectfully, complete failures in the industry. Finneas had a few voice acting roles and some music that wasn't great. I think he realized when she was old enough and showed interest in what he was doing that they would make a better songwriting duo. Obviously she became the face of it, her style and her voice were obviously going to be the face of it. And she's also not entirely wrong about industry plants never becoming *that* successful. I admit I lost some respect for her after the male body rant, but in fairness, I guess, she was homeschooled and has never really seen the real world.
Yeah I don't see what the big deal here is. So what if she doesn't write all of her music? Since when has that ever been a requirement for a solo pop star? And back in my day before the internet blew up, literally every last famous singer was an "industry plant" by their definition (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Usher, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, aallllll the boy bands, etc. etc.). Those acts had talent + looks + professional writers + big label support. Since when has any of that changed, and why is Billie held to a different standard?
I mean Billie never said she did the work by herself. Dudes mad for what? shes tallented and have people investing in her career. Thats isnt news in the music industry

The whole thing is a big business with a lot of money on the line. Why do you think so many of the famous pop stars are former Disney kids? They have been training to be "artists" since they were young, with the help of teams of people behind them.

Fun Fact: Motown Records produced many well known industry plants before anyone knew what an industry plant was.
Also. It’s so much more “influencer” based now. And these people use this to push narratives and shit like that.
isn't this just everyone in kpop ever
wait lmaoo i did not think bout it like that. You right
i think that is mostly manufactured by their labels, from image, marketing, sound production etc.. but now the labels allow their artist to co produce the songs.. IDk, and their company/labels reputation plays a lot of roles of pushing their group at forefront
Pretty much, yup. South Korea has spent decades washing their image through KPop and the fact that it works kinda gives me shivers.

I think some people are confusing artist development with industry plants (especially Progress) . Saying someone has to have a global scale before the ca get signed doesn't make any sense tbh.
Yeah I hear you. To be honest I think a lot of people would be surprised about just how manufactured the sixties counter culture artists were? The difference now is though that a group like the Beatles got good through playing in Hamburg and were allowed to fail
@@beanpasteposts I never claimed that Cole is a "industry plant" I literally said in order for a musician to be sign they need to show potential and grow some kind of audience. That doesn't equate to being a "industry plant." Seriously read my comment next time
Low key feel like there was some reaching with Billie.

This Billy interview is all over the place she keeps contradicting herself
Good lord didn't we know Finneas wrote and produced Billie's music? Who did not know this? That's why they went together to the Grammy's and both won things. And why in the promo for her second album he was sitting with her and she was saying, "we," in terms of working on it. I never knew that people ever thought she was more than just a singer or that she was hiding that. I know I'm not the only person who is fully aware Billie Eilish got famous when her famous brother started writing her songs. I'm pretty sure I've read articles about this and seen her talking about otherwise how would I know? Deciding to change up the story is lunacy. No clue why she or the label thought that would fly
Ok.. I'm remembering an interview where she talks about her famous parents, being homeschooled in LA (who can do that but rich people), her brothers music career and when she started singing his music. Progress acting like that was hidden info is really something.
Also, I should be clear I'm not really a Billie fan. I haven't even heard most of her music. I just knew the narrative was that she's a member of a talented and well connected family. But I do think she exaggerated her parents being nobodies. I'm sure she thinks they're nobodies. I had never heard of them before and still have no idea who they are but they're connected and she should recognize that.
Exactly. It was well known that she sings, both write and he produces. So many are acting like that was not well known.
@@dahliacheung6020 I know plenty of poor people who were homeschooled 😂 And correct, you don’t even know her parents - they are nobodies. Obviously her brother and parents helped her. She has never denied that and mentions it all the time. Maybe because they were in the industry they knew people who knew people and how to get her signed and everything. But just because you are signed doesn’t mean you will be successful like she clearly is, that takes talent and to actually be liked by the general public.
@@ManifestingMariah No, it takes marketing and that's all it takes. Usually artists got signed by small indie labels (which have now gone pretty much extinct), got a little exposure from touring with bigger acts and then maybe get signed by big labels and get more famous. Getting signed with the intention of making a random person famous without having anything been done by themselves is not a sign of talent, it's a sign of excessive marketing.
Whitney Houston and a host of others never wrote a damn note of a song in their career and became very successful. Rihanna, if we're being honest, is the most untalented successful music artist ever. She even got to do a couple of movies with zero acting talent or training. What now?
to be honest, being an industry plant doesn’t mean your bad at music.
This. I'm screaming right now. I didn't know singers has to be songwriters and producers. Are we gonna hate on Rihanna and Ariana Grande now too? Both are well known for singing song written by others. Billie is a singer. That's all I thought we EVER thought she was. Guess not.
@@dahliacheung6020An industry plant just means you have the major connections to get planted into a major deal, without having built up a following or an audience previously, or really any sort of ep to show for. It’s not so much the “having to be singer song writers”, but the being nepo babied into the music industry based on higher ups taking a candid investment in a product. A great example of an industry plant is someone like Baby Goth or Jumex. However, it doesn’t help the industry plant allegations when the artist also doesn’t take part in any of the production value and is handed a script, only to utilize their vocals.

7:04 Even if she doesn't believe in the term she could probably fit into the Nepo baby category similar to Miley Cyrus.
Really, the industry just wants to use their kids and friends kids cause they are out of ideas. So...they pick some creative looking kid and make them become someone they aren't for the fame of it all. Without skills or will...these kids do what they are told, and that's always nice. And once in a while you get one that actually can learn to be creative and have skill
Ice spice was probably the most obvious industry plant lol
if we are using the term industry plant then i'd say billie ellish is an industry plant as she was basically born and raised for that lifestyle. her parents getting her into music from a young age, a successful producer brother to make her songs for her, signing to a label from her first song at age 13, etc. she's not really doing anything it's her family working with the label pulling all the strings and she's just a puppet. at 13 years old she probably didn't even know what a record label is i imagine the parents handled the label stuff. so being born into that life has allowed her to speed to the top. but i don't think we should be annoyed with her i think it's the people around her we should be blaming. i don't believe parents should raise and condition their child to be a superstar. i can't prove that's what her parents did but wouldn't surprise me as there are a lot of parents that do. parents that want their child to be a superstar one day so they start conditioning them and preparing them from day one then when they reach their early teens the parents go hard on trying to get them into talent competitions, getting them heard by labels, etc.
If she were just a product of the industry and nothing else then she would have fallen off a while ago just like “industry plants” in the past.

saying someone isn't a industry plant right before listing all the accolades given to her by the industry is some nice mental dissonance
people are too sympathetic toward industry plants imo. it dosen't matter if they've 'worked hard' to have industry connections, because the problem is that they're putting that energy into finding people to create a brand for them instead of art itself. they don't have their own vision for a sound or have artistic goals, because if they genuinely did, the fame and success won't matter. people make art for the sake of it regardless if it's seen or not. if you had to finesse your way into finding powerful people before you've even made any art then you're not an artist. letting these fame-hungry people have the spotlight takes those valuable opportunities away from all the struggling underground artists who do have something new to offer to music. any musician knows that artists irl are very stingy with who they let mess with their sound. i don't believe any genuine artist would let an industry exec change their sound 10 times over and be okay with it.

The whole part about Billie not writing her own music is really distasteful. It’s perfectly fine to not like someone’s music or even disrespect their upbringing- but I find it really appalling that to criticize Eilish you have to stoop so low as to say that she has no artistry due to not writing (which isn’t even entirely true for all her music as she’s at least been writing songs after Ocean Eyes)

i think the billie argument is a bit weak.. any beyonce song has like 20 writers on it. no one says shes not a talent. also those two interviews where the song was made for a dance sound the same to me with only some nuance. which happens when recalling something
Billie is a Nepo Baby with a nice enough voice
I'm 58, my dad was a radio DJ in the'60s and '70s, and nothing here is new except for some changes in distribution of content and wealth. The few artists in the business with any talent are writing everybody else's stuff.
Having parents who work in the entertainment industry is appealing to starmakers because it means they can do business with you.
Ice spice is so weird
Cardi b is the biggest industry plant I’ve ever seen
nah justin bieber
@@vvvexenz and cardi b
Nah, Taylor Swift is
Billie has always said her & Finneas wrote together. She's always given him his flowers. Sounds like a bunch of ppl are jealous, esp that Progress dude...sorry,don't know him, but he genuinely seems jealous AF lol (& I don't mean just jealous of Billie)
does it really matter if they're plants or not, if the material is good?
Do you really think Billie Eillish is one of the first artists to ever be exposed as an industry plant? 🤣
I can't stand billiy eilish, to say we all artists are sad just sounds stupid and pretentious, just because she thinks that's a cool thing to say it doesn't make it any true and there she is, talking like she knows better than anyone... and the more I listen to her the less I like her, to say it's impossible to make someone successful through industry is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard, that's exactly how it works for most of the popular artists, you get your music played everywhere so people end up memorizing it and liking it because the industry also cared for the music to have a nice production, a catching melody and a pretty boy or girl singing it, that woman is so cynical
btw, all those prizes are part of the marketing campagin, she doesn't fool anyone with a brain
bro said the same thing twice. "Billie put it out for her dance teacher, but she also said she recorded it for dance." There's no contracdiction. Only poor reading comprehension
The contradiction was that Billie said she ‘made the song with her brother for the dance teacher’ then also said in another interview that she ‘covered the song that was already made by her brother for his band’. Billie is a terrible lair & you can’t listen
@@codywalker4729 or maybe take off yur aluminum foil hat. her brother had written the song for his band and thought billie would sing it better, so they recorded it and released it for her dance teacher.
Billie was a dance kid real young too right? Her bro also used her vocals. Why is it weird to think they collaborate? Vocals arent easy to find. So much Billie hate?
Billie is talented but an egomaniac
egomaniac? agree to disagree
Billie I think had the inside track to be "Discovered" where others have bots and corporate manipulation pushing the perception of popularity hoping group think takes hold despite limited talent. As you showed Billie seems to have real popularity and the accolades.
Good music is good music. I think a space exist for both types of artists.
The problem is the plants want to be seen and treated as artists who made it on their own rather than helped by the industry.
@@xlixity I mean they're talented and still sacrifice lots of their time. One way or another they will be paying their dues.
Agreed. This just seems petty to me but different countries, different culture. Who cares how they made it they're still artistes.
6:46 ofc you can

people are impressionable!!! especially your fans honey because they're young

Calling your parents “nobodies” is crazy
she meant in the acting scene. literally search up her mum and name me two movies you recognise
@@gogster7975 that’s no the point… she could have said “they’re not famous” … calling them nobodies is just disrespectful
Channels like this make being a truck driver seem great lol also helps pass the seemingly infinite time
It’s not what you know, it’s who you know
By that definition, every boy band is industry plants.
Yes.
And the country music industry is also rife with them too.
Yes, that's exactly what a boy band is.
@@ratatatuff same goes for all of those k pop groups.
@@11FBA11 Yep. Same soulless manufactured "music" like boy bands, girl groups or solo plants.
Billie eilish is still around because of her brother having a writing talent
Ice spice got away with it cuz she attractive, got good vibes, and never portrayed to be something she’s not
Progress just seems like a salty brat not a billie fan but he just saw salty 😂😂😂
I agree, like damn bro it's just Billie Eilish who cares 😂
talking about how Billie is a Industry Plant but then saying shes not because she won industry awards is kinda funny
What happened to Progress ?
He started making crypto content and then dissapeaeed
@@slaborx yeah weird. the labels must of silenced him somehow, threatened a lawsuit, or paid him to shut up.
He was outed as an industry plant
@@slaborxgood riddance
"even industry plants work really hard" spoken like a real plant and tryna say u cant fake it is hilarious
I mean Billie never said she did the work by herself. Dudes mad for what? shes tallented and have people investing in her career. Thats isnt news in the music industry
Record Labels own 50% of their money and 100% of their life.
Billie eilish bit felt oddly defensive compared to everyone else in this and your first vid. Her getting a ton of awards has no relation to whether or not she's an industry plant. Its useless info, maybe rishavfash is a fan idk. Good job on the vid though.
good point to be honest, I just meant after a certain point it's not as important you know
The fact she won that many awards so quick yet her fanbase is nothing but teenage suburban girls in a "not-like-the-other-girls" phase is proof she's a plant.
This is so pretentious “she doesn’t write all her songs so she’s not an artist.” Stfu 🙄🙄
