What is going on my mates!
Today we will be talking about why pop punk sucks | or rather why people think pop punk sucks + whether or not that's a bad thing + how it can improve
It's kinda hard to go through life without hearing a pop punk song, especially if you grew up in the late 90's early 2000's when bands like blink-182, Green Day, Sum 41, and all those types of bands were poppin. It was on the radio, the mall, it was hard to evade.
These days pop punk isn't so popular commercially but is for sure kept alive by acts like The Story So Far, Neck Deep, Real Friends, The Wonder Years, Knuckle Puck, you know the bands I'm talking about.
While I do offer some criticism towards the genre, I'll always love it and end the video on a high note. Watch till the end. I usually don't say that, but just do it this once with this video, per my request. Love you even if you don't.
Thank you for all the immense support lately, it never goes unnoticed.
Best,
Nate
And now.. it's time for the feature presentation you've been waiting for: Why Pop Punk Sucks

Im not a big fan of pop punk but my second fav band are "blink-182" and my fav are "green day" oxymoronic innit
The worst thing about pop punk is all the ignorant children arguing about what pop punk is and what bands fall under that banner. Fuck up and enjoy the music you spoilt suburban brats.
Almost freaked out
Dont make it 10 minutes for the sake of advertiser revenue and dont make a video title such as this.
kyle abent I trimmed it down from 14 minutes
I dont care about genres

facts.
Don't care about your thoughts
Pop punk mainly consists of annoying fans who have zero personality, dress sense or taste. The music itself is oversaturated, whiney, repetitive, nasaly and cliche. It's no surprise the aforementioned fanbase like this typical middle of the road cock rock. And tbh, from my experience it tends to be emos, jocks, lesbians and peoppe who aspire to be the latter or the former who listen to it I.e. the worst. The more power to you for liking it but aside from the douche taint and teenage angst, at it's very core, pop punk tends to just be generic these days. I could at least kinda respect old stuff for being somewhat original but not this cesspit.
@@insertnamehere8723 The only people I see whining are the people bashing it tbh. The only pop punk band I like is Greenday though. Ive heard the others but I wouldnt call myself a fan.

I was on about the content, which is usually very whiney.
Now you made me feel afraid that one day I will stop loving Pop Punk.
Well I guess this is growing up.

No, pop punk will not go, so turn the lights off, and carry me on... nananananana

I think Sum 41 is a big part of pop punk and was completely left out.
Yeah, what the heck, man?
Sum 41's a little harder to classify in terms of music as their love for thrash metal, melodic-hardcore and 80s rap-rock kind of set them apart from the others, but most wouldn't question their role within the pop punk scene.
They're sliding by at around 1:13 lmao they in there

@Sonny Padilla dude, you literally listen to RAC

Pop punk is not punk!
@@diddlefiggins6557 ok but what makes you think I care about your opinion lmao
Maybe this is why Billie Joe Armstrong wanted to kill the term "pop punk"
@Jake Charles are you talking about Green Day's music? That's pop punk. Alternative pop would be, like, bmth's "medicine". Green Day is pop punk because punk is short for punk *rock*
It’s a slightly misleading label because it implies Green Day = Backstreet Boys and it’s also similar to how a lot of the Seattle bands hated being called Grunge
Jake Charles I’m not sure if you knew this but music genres are not decided by the popularity of the music but instead decided by the sound of the music. Punk rock fans have a tendency to reject anything remotely catchy or commercial when bands like The Ramones where literally directly influenced by bubblegum pop and attempted to emulate it in their music. I don’t believe you have to be a “punk” band to be a pop punk band. At the end of the day all pop punk is is music that takes the general speed and punk like energy/guitar work but with a stronger sense of pop based melody and a focus on pop song writing.
Jake Charles So is a band no longer pop punk when they become mainstream or what? Like what is your definition of punk rock and what is your definition of pop punk? The idea of a pop punk purist is honestly hilarious to me.
Jake Charles Okay, I respectfully disagree.
I'm 31 and still enjoy pop punk. 🤷♂️

I blame the early Tony Hawks games for my love of pop punk

Punk logic: Be yourself but don't be outed as a poser
@Transgenda Gubament Back in the late 70s and early 80s when punk was punk. It was a do it yourself attitude. Now its just lets sound angry and mad and "fuck the government" bs.
War Precautions when was any punk band pro government?
@@G_RIMM That is not what I meant. But many punk bands tried to fit this mainstream image and just copy the Sex Pistols. Punk is simply not just 'angry' music.

@@Selrisitai I think it's because they had many phases as a band. They started off as pop-punk, then they became punk, then they became hard rock and now they're a heavy metal band. I turned 40-years-old this year (don't tell anyone), and I still listen to a lot of pop/punk bands; mostly, New Found Glory, MXPX, Blink 182, even Stand Atlantic (among many other groups, etc.). Some of the best songs, most excellent lyrics, and feel-good vibes.
Music is music, if it catches your ear, whether it's Pop Punk, Classical, Country or whatever, why shouldn't you listen to it
I’m 41 and yep I still love it, but I suggested I lean to more skater punk, but also a fan offspring, green day and penny wise. When it got popular that’s when it become pop punk, when it became American pie/ American shows rock then it changed, but the early stuff still totally awesome.
Ah yes, my favorite Blink song.... Dagnabit
Helpthony Metano no, Happy Holidays you Bastard is the best one
me and my old freshman English teacher have been sending each other pop punk bands we both like for 2 years over email. This shows that the genre is also timeless as well.
Pop punk is an emotional tribute for a lot of people. It rocks.
Yeah, pop punk doesn’t suck.
No, it absolutely sucks
I love how Nate sounds like a lead singer in a pop punk band.
I didn't really care for pop punk until a few years ago when I realized I was nostalgic for it because it was EVERYWHERE when I was a kid in the early 2000s
And that's true for everyone..
Not many people realise how diverse "Pop Punk" actually is. I'm actually quite surprised you put Screeching Weasel in between Green Day and Offspring. Sadly in terms of influence, kids couldn't care less what the Weasels did. Personally, I think the new generation of Pop Punk bands (2010 Onwards) tend to lean towards "Emo", as opposed to the traditional "Skate Punk" style pioneered by the Weasels, The Descendents, The Parasites, The Queers, early Green Day & Blink, etc.
As for the "Power Pop" bit, bands like The Exploding Hearts, The Marked Men, The Biters, or The CRY! were the only ones to fit the description accurately in more recent years. Taking their "Pop" from 50s and 60s Pop and Doo Wop, and combining it with the aggression of Punk and the Mod Revivalists from the late 70s.
Thanks for the suggestions on the "Power Pop" bands. They all feel like a throwback to what I consider 70s era "Pop Punk" or even just good old rock. Reminds me of bands like Buzzcocks, the Kinks, Suzie Quatro, the NY Dolls, Joe Jackson, the Replacements, etc. I like them!
People mixxed indie with pop punk it was awful the 2003 style came back for a little bit then vanished breakdowns and faster tempos came back stuck around awhile
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. To me, any so-called "pop-punk" released 2005 and later (Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Paramore, etc.) sounds like and could be better described as emo/alternative than anything else. I think it's weird, laughable, and downright dishonest to suggest otherwise.
This may be a bold statement, but to me, you can't have songs that are mostly in a minor key, dark/angsty/emo/misanthropic/nihilistic lyrics, gloomy vibes, Drop D/Db/C tuned guitars, half tempo drums, heavy chugging breakdowns and still be considered "pop-punk". It just becomes something else entirely from the happy, major key, lyrics about high school/girlfriends/skateboarding, etc., standard tuned guitars, punchy double or triple tempo drum beats (to me, "true" pop-punk) of the 90s and early 00s.
You could say that the genre as a whole has shifted in this direction. You could even say that the true pop-punk bands (by my definition) from the 90s-early 00s themselves have also drifted in the emo/alternative/post-hardcore/metalcore/crabcore (or as one commenter put it: "punk these days is just just metal-lite.") direction over time. Fair enough. But at least call it what it is and not equivocate it with something that is vastly different.
reminds me a lot of how screamo went from being a defined genre in the 90s to being a catch-all for every kind of music with harsh vocals after myspace kids discovered the word and overused it. thankfully both real pop punk and real screamo exists but now i just say i listen to punk when someone asks what i listen to to avoid pseudo elitists laughing at me.
Yeah, what was coined "pop punk" all the way through the mid to late 90s -- things like Screeching Weasel, the Queers, etc. were a lot different than what came later. Once things had moved on to bands like Sum 41, New Found Glory, and everything after that, some of us had already moved on to stuff like the garage rock revival bands with more overt 50s/60s influences that were coming out of places like Crypt Records, Rip Off Records, and Sympathy for the Record Industry (just to name a couple), and discovering the 1960s punk influences through things like the Nuggets / Back from the Grave / Pebbles comps. Even one of the groups you mentioned, the Marked Men, sprung from the ashes of a more garage-y band, the Reds. Power Pop bands around the same time were along the lines of groups like the Briefs and FM Knives, though I'm sure there are some bands that are more poppy than those that came around a little later.
My favourite Blink-182 song, "Dagnabit", from their "Fellow mates Ranch" album.
Yeah Weezer is really not pop punk my guy
Baden Dennis some songs they have are
@@SOBEKCrocodileGod they started as nerd punk or sumthing but i think they could have been pop punk but they changed over time
lmao right?? weezer is like garage rock and if it needs to be narrowed down more than it's pop rock.
I think the problem with it is considering these bands as anything punk. The story so far, wonder years and most of these bands are just pop, pop rock. Nothing wrong with Weezer or Jimmy eat world but definitely not punk or even pop punk. Like calling every cola Coke it’s become such a generic term, they are a cola not Coke.
@@Fineonee i think since pop has such a different sound than it did in the 90s people hear the guitars and tend to catagorize it in pop rock or pop punk when honestly it's just pop, as least that's my opinion. as much as i hate to call weezer (my fav band) pop, it basically is.
7:00 branched out to math rock, midwest emo, and 90s hip hop and seriously never looked back.
Space Ghost, I've listened to The Get Up Kids since I was a teenager and I only found out they were 'midwest emo' cos my ex always described them as that. I'd never heard of Midwest Emo before, I always thought of TGUK as being 'like Green Day but with extended chords' 😂😂
This is sooooooooooooooooo true. It's not even funny.
i'm surprised at how little blink was mentioned as in my mind they're surely the biggest mainstream pop punk band right? at least from 1999-2003
True, but keep in mind Nate never said this was a documentary on the complete history of pop-punk
Punk was born as something POP. "Sex Pistols" were a sort of boy band created at a table and they were signed under Virgin Records, a MAJOR label ! Punk was pop even before that term was coined.
No you're wrong. We had "punk" in the late 60s in detroit with The Stooges and the MC5. The singer of The Stooges Iggy pop was called a punk on front page magazine and their music is defo not pop but more of a hybrid of blues and hard rock which is known as proto-punk.....
Just saying, it probably would have been a good idea to mention that the Neck Deep guitarist got acquitted of all charges and the girl said she made it up for attention
i fuckin love neck deep. and anyone punk. don’t matter where u came from imo
The guitarist from neck deeps is actually kinda cute

@Sorry Mom I'm Floppy using that logic you could say AFI is a hxc punk band, or a misfits coverband, because they were both at one point in time. green day is NOT a punk band.
@Sorry Mom I'm Floppy According to my mom who was a 70s and 80s punk, Green Day isn't punk.
Pop/punk is my comfort food. I love the simplicity and the nostalgia it gives me.
Early 2000s/Late 90s Type Music,makes sense
I love pop punk and I agree so much with all of those facts. It's just perfect and it's not at the same time, that's even more perfect
This was a dangerous title name, but I'm glad I took the bait and watched the whole video
I love pop punk, it gives me life and I love when modern music includes pop punk aspects
The Wonder Years has always been doing things that are more interesting than the rest, and every album from the greatest generation onwards has been an incredible and they've matured over time, instead of perpetually being stuck in their early 20s.
The Greatest Generation was a pop punk album through and through but it also marked their subtle departure from the pop punk sound. I think a lot of that has to deal with the snyths and I'm so glad they're more prominent on their last two records. Plus his lyrics and the topics he sings about nowadays are way more mature and thought out than most of their peers.
Gotta say, the note at the end about the genre meshing well with other sounds is a really good point and I think its starting to become realised. Love it or hate it, we all know about MGK's venture into pop punk (personally think its sick but that's just an opinion) and it's sort of acted like a catalyst for other artists to move into it. Mostly the emo/pop rap artists like iann dior and trippie redd are starting to blend their sounds with it and poorstacy adds an alternative twist with yungblud blending his stylised sound too. The man at the centre of this? Travis Barker. In conclusion, Travis Barker is singlehandedly reviving pop punk.
I’m 17 and it’s so true about discovering different music and how it develops. I loved pop punk from 2006-2016 with a passion and then I got into metalcore, emo, emo rap, rap, pop, jazz, etc. afterwards
When I was that age 2 years ago I had an uncontrollable urge to listen to never gonna give you up and harder better faster stronger before I transitioned into metalcore and alternative rock
You gotta look at this from an ACTUAL punk rockers view. I’m not talking Blink 182, I’m talking about Dead Kennedy’s, Black Flag, Minor Threat, and other great bands from the 80s. If you take a fan of THAT music and see them react to their favorite genre get degraded into doopy love songs or songs about sadness when it used to be “Fuck the Government” and “Destroy Everything,” then you can see why they would get upset. I personally enjoy THAT vibe instead of..pop punk

I grew up in a black neighborhood in southern Georgia and moved to suburban atlanta in 2001 and i was blown away by how big pop punk was there. It was huge at my high school and it meant nothing to me. But now after nearly 20 years since graduation i find that even though that music meant nothing to me, it matters to me that it mattered to the people around me. Would love to dig into it but im not sure where to start nor am i sure ill ever give this stuff a second listen but im still a physical media guy so if i get into it im buying
Before I watch this, I'm posting my guess. A lot of people hate pop punk because it's an oxymoron. Punk by nature is abrasive and anti establishment whereas pop by nature is polished and establishment. Punks despise pop fans and the feeling is mutual. It takes a certain more open type of person to listen to a genre that blends opposite genres.
7:13 I can remember being 13 and feeling bad that I was obsessed with BFMV, Cindi Lauper, The Libertines and Eminem. All the other kids in my orphanage made fun of me saying that I was a poseur and I should only listen to one genre of music. But a C is a C no matter what genre you're playing. I think people who play instruments view music differently to others
Id rather have pop punk more then normal pop any day though.
Weezer’s recent song, “ End of the Game” has become my new favorite because it gave me good ol’ 2000 vibes.

Okay but what happens when you go full circle and come back to listening to mostly/only pop punk.
Send help please I've regressed.
My favorite blink song has to be dagnabit after watching this video.
It's not that fame corrupts people. People are already corrupted all over. You take a handful of people off the street and get to know their deepest secrets, and you're gonna find some dark shit. What is fame? Fame is just taking a handful of people off the street, and setting them apart from everyone else. We tend to forget this, that celebrities are still regular people. Now the difference is, the public eye is on them. Every move they make is being watched. So when their dark secrets or the flaws in the personality see the light, everyone is gonna freak out about it. And the hilarious part is, while these people are freaking out over it, they don't realize they're likely standing next to someone hiding the same thing. When it happens to the average person, nobody is gonna bat an eye. They dont know the person. So they dont care. When it happens to the average, it's a mere statistic. But when it happens to their favorite musician or actress or tv host, it's a headline.
Blink-182 Dagnabit made me laugh
When I first started listening to music I built my music taste around pop punk and in the beginning that was 90% of what I listened to. But with time I was able to enjoy and love other genres such as indie rock, indie pop and even a bit of pop

Also on a side note, I think the band Belmont has huge potential to be a big name in pop punk in the future. Literally every song on their debut album is fire. My music taste didn't changed a bit since then so I guess I'm an exception and after almost 11 years I'm pretty sure I won't start liking genres I disliked so many years already. For example 'll never gonna like rap , actually my aversion towards rap related music even growed from year to year
Those are my favourite genres too. Like I branch off into some just more traditional rock, and obviously I have a couple of nostalgia pop songs (nothing recent, but stuff I remember from being a kid) but those are basically it for me
I unironically enjoy bill cosby's rap/hiphop albums but trap will always be total shit to me.

All I’m going to say is, if Chris Brown can come back after beating Rihanna then so can pop punk 👍🏻
I was born in ‘87 and I’d say that gave me the opportunity to be just the right age when pop punk really took off. At 35, I still listen to the crap I listened to as a teenager and enjoy it, but my god, there have been so many fantastic pop punk style bands that have came out in the last 15 years and seem to just be coming out like crazy. There is no shortage of good music in this genre for kids today who are into it, and the quality of it far surpasses a lot of junk we had to listen to back then in my opinion!
The things I listened to as a teen makes me cringe now. Lol
where does Blink's untitled record fall in this spectrum? i feel like that album is objectively a good and, at the time, fresh piece of music from blink

I don’t think I could ever say it sucks but that’s just because I grew up on it and listen to it everyday to me it has much more feeling packed into unlike other stuff now days, yes it can be repetitive but each band really makes it sound so much different. Also who else can’t wait for a new movements record :)
love you justin! thank you m8! new movements will be sick
Pop punk made me feel better about myself even though I'm always excluded from society
Blink182, Jimmy Eat World, Bowling for soup, fountains of wayne, green day fall out boy all time low the front bottoms, we the Kings you name it
Imagine saying Weezer and Modern Baseball were Pop Punk
I mean
Tigers jaw are pop punk?
I think both of those bands have many elements of pop punk in their music
@@NateTheMateForever modern baseball is a stretch
Weezer idk about but Modern Baseball is definitely some sadboy tumblr brand pop punk/emo.
going through these comments has made me realize how many iconic pop punk lyrics there are
16 just held such better days
Nice work bro! You’re killing it with these videos! Much love from Pop-Punk League!
dude I love you!!! and your account
I used to love pop punk so much, but by the time I turned 22, 23 I got so deeply annoyed by pop punk that this former love turned into a passionate hate. It just turned into a parody of itself. Now I mostly listen to new wave punk and everything that's kinda off or weird. But I do think pop punk gave me so much when I was younger, and I'm glad it exists. It was my way into music and the music scene. I also played in pop punk bands, which was so much fun
My opinion neck deep is the best pop punk band today...they has the late 90s and early 2000 pop punk sound
The music’s fine. The problem is that people who build their identity around a genre are generally cringey af. This goes for any genre. Music is music
Yeah the music is fine itself though it can be criticized.
Holy shit my dude you’re getting a lot bigger on this UA-cam thing. Keep on trucking!
thank you so much my mate!!! I really love those last 3 digits at the end of your name. Much love from california
After watching the whole video I am happy to say that I still very much enjoy pop punk
fun fact: 99% of green day fans got angry after watching this video
as long as we can leave title fight out of this equation i can agree
I still love a ton of pop punk and I'm in my early 40's. However, I also listen to lots of other stuff too. If I hear it and like it then I just do. No need to limit myself to any particular genre.
That Turnover and Movements shout out made me so happy to see. Turnover gets a lot of flack for changing their sound but every album is just better and better.
Pop punk->Easycore->Metalcore. That’s my music journey lol
Rock>heavy metal>progress rock>emo(?)>pop punk>lofi
I guess I've had quite the musical journey lol
Now I’m in between easycore and metalcore
You’re lucky! I have gone through so many genres it’s crazy. Here it goes: Rap->Pop->Emo->Classic Rock-> back to Emo->Metal->J-Pop->Indie->Hard Rock->and finally, Pop Punk and Punk Rock!
punk rock->pop punk->emo->ska punk->alternative rock->melodic hardcore->classic rock->new wave->funk rock->indie->post-hardcore->psychodelic rock->easycore->post-punk->garage rock->all the genres I already mentioned and more.
I am from Latin America (Argentina, South America). I usually listen some of all that music in english ... and spanish and portuguese too. It's amazing and I love it: D
I agree with the idea that pop punk needs to evolve and try out new things so we're not pumping out the exact same songs now as we were 20 years ago... but there's no freaking way I'm going to listen to a song that meshes anything that sounds like Lil Peep.
Yo when I was 15, I thought all I needed was Post-Hardcore, Pop punk, Metalcore, and Dubstep lmao.
I'm 28 and that's still all I need. Most notably Metalcore and PostHard (Underoath/Emery/Sky Eats Airplane/Old ADTR/etc)
Have you listened to The Wonder Years last album? The evolution in their lyrics and sound is so amazing, it was the best album of 2018 for me.
Also, I agree with everything you said. And I also think that if Pop Punk is dying is because the fanbase is killing it. I think this can be said for any genre with "punk" in its name. Take Yellowcard, for example. I absolutely love their last two albums but I really think they split out because they were heavily criticized for "not being the same"
Or just take any band, actually. Which are criticized for "not being Punk" anymore and either falling into shadows, totally disappearing or trying to go back to a similar sound but being criticized anyway for "not being the same"
I always imagine what could come from experimenting, and I really appreciate the bands that try in such a toxic scene.
That's pretty much just music as a whole. The fans are going to complain one way or the other. That said, I think the artist does have _some_ obligation to the fans to retain some semblance of the sound that made 'em famous. If they wanna do something significantly different, I think they should start a new band with the new sound and leave the old band to fade gracefully.
Wonder Years is terrible
Blink will always be the gods of pop punk
I loved the new direction of TSSF's Proper Dose. I've also gotten into nothing.nowhere and KennyHoopla's stuff recently, definitely interesting pop punk influences in both their sounds
My guiltiest pleasure: The Front Bottoms
Don’t feel guilty. The Front Bottoms rule!
My emo artists are my starting point to what I currently listen to. I started out listening to Evanescence, Linkin Park, FOB and 3 Days of Grace. Now I'm listening to a lot of power metal and classical music. And I can definitely hear some similarities between what I listened to at 13 vs what I'm listening to at 23.
That's not emo
Pop punk lyric really inspired me and help me grow ...up
Mainly simple plan , green day , sum 21 are just amazing
when i saw heart attack man at 6:06 i smiled so hard to myself, i met them last month and they're some of the sweetest, most genuine people. a friend of mine gave eric a worm on a string he put in his pocket and we took a group photo pretending to beat him up. his chaotic energy blinded us all thank u for coming to my ted talk
yall scribbled out my man awsten :/
I saw that 😂 I thought that was kinda funny for some reason
I'm 21 and I've been listening to all and more of these bands since I was 11 or 12 years old... It's still my favorite type of music. It's 95% of what I listen to nowadays. This genre might not garner as much attention, but the small "group" of people that listen to pop punk are extremely passionate about it.
When blink 182 and Green Day first came out they were good
I had the same exact situation as you mentioned at around seventh minute, I realised that pop punk was the foundation for my future music taste. Various pop punk songs were included in video games I played from mid2000s and thats how it all started. The simplicity and joy that this genre conveys is so appealing for a young kid who can later dive deeper into more alternative music. Now I’m so thankful to pop punk for doing this to me and still making me excited while listening to this shit as if i was 8yo. Thanks for making this video, this topic has always been on my mind; cheers and defend pop punk xDDDD
