Star Wars was so advanced for the time with realistic 3D and sounds, it still holds up today and I'm lucky enough to have the Arcade1Up Star Wars cabinet. It is still totally playable.
While most would consider these simple and basic to most kids growing up these days, to me there is an indescribable and irresistible charm to these old arcade vector games. My favorites are Star Trek S.O.S., Tempest, Space Fury, Tac-Scan, Star Wars, Space Duel and Major Havoc.
Bit of trivia about Quantum (13:23): The game had an "interactive attract mode" - sort of a playable demo that let you try out a simple version of the game for about ten seconds (IIRC). The demo had no score and only one particle to capture, but it let you try out and learn how the "particle capture" mechanic worked (and how the trackball movement "felt") _before_ putting in any quarters.
It was an _incredibly_ rare feature for arcade games, and didn't really re-appear until "shareware demos" emerged in the home PC gaming scene a decade or so later.
I never knew that, very interesting! I love the new Recharged version!
Even 40+ years later I don't think anything really beats vector games...... just the beautiful crispness of the graphics and the general aesthetic. Awesome!
Some really odd ones here (that boxing one especially!) but the major ones of the era are still the classics to this day... The usual suspects Star Wars. Battlezone, Asteroids, Tempest.
Black Widow and Space Duel were spectacular discoveries for me in the late 90s when MAME was released...
Speed Freak could have been an all time classic if the gameplay and sensitivity had been worked on.
Some of those beautiful shoot em ups I see are ones I never saw back in the day in Blackpool late 70s to mid 80s) ... and the Atari F14 is brand new for me...
Many thanks for the trip down memory lane!
i realist the odds of this happening are effectively zero cuz who the hell owns an ossicoscope. but would be really cool if there were a vector revival. would be so interesting to see what people would come up with using modern computers.
Exactly what I was thinking. I wonder if it would be possible to modify a regular CRT TV into a vector display and program some games using modern hardware!
Vector games have aged pretty well graphic wise compared to other games from the same era in which they were used, but i think they might still be a little expensive to produce idk though im not an expert on this.
Have you seen 'Paradox Vector' ?
I don't think there would be many difference between old and modern hardware when comes to vectors..resolution doesn't matter with vectors and they will be remain ever shining lines and empty geometric figures..maybe you could do larger levels but the landscape would remain the same...at the end these games, gameplay apart, are beautiful mostly due to the psychedelic effect and its conditioning power on our brains. Remove the phosphorus shining effect and they will remain simply lines and empty polygons.
I have seen some vector like, arcade styled games in the Steam store. While most of them seem to be styled after other vector classics, like one I saw that was like a planet version only of Gravitar, others seem to be more original. There is hope...
2:05 that transparency/filter on Astroids deluxe is great: For 1 second
I came here looking for Battlezone and there it is (Chapter 7)! I used to love that game, it felt like it was 3D!
Star trek and star wars game was my jam.
There are still very few arcade games that beat the experience of sit down Star Wars.
The arcade game meteorites is similar to Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe.
The game Lunar Battle is similar to Gravitar also.
Tempest is awesome
OMG Barrier is ROCK BAND!
How did you get that lighting effect in Meteorites? I tried the rom, but it doesn't have that effect.
WOW THANK YOU FOR HISTORICAN INFO.
These are not in the order I discovered them lol
Could a vector display do flatshaded 3D if it were running on a powerful enough system?
I don't believe so, I think it can only draw lines and plot pixels.
It wouldn't be able to fill in the polygons. It can do 3d, but it's only wireframes.
What’s the best rendering style? Vector, pixel, voxel, ray casting, or polygonal?
I realize this is an old video, but I just watched it - looking for retro vector graphics arcade games - but can you tell me what game is shown after asteroids deluxe? i thought it was maybe 4031 A.D. since that is what is at the top of the artwork shown, but I couldn't find a game by that name. What is it? Thanks in advance (if you see this)
It's Aztarac, weird that it doesn't say on the flyer actually.
@@TheLairdsLairThanks so much. Actually after I read this I watched it one more time - and it DOES in fact say the name of the game at the end of that game clip - I was just being impatient. BTW - I really love your channel - I download your vids for reference and re-watching all the time. Cheers and thanks again!
woa, these graphics are tubular!
tempest was coolest game ever different
Yes, Tempest is the best 80s arcade game ever.
What's the game shown briefly at 11:09?
That's part of Major Havoc
How much are the systems worth I have one?
Depends which one?
Please someone help me find this game. It's like asteroids but you can fly around and the camera follows you. There's these big bases you can fly in to destroy?. You get a high score. Also I remember there being space police or something that come after you blow up a base? I cannot find it anywhere, and no one I ask knows what I'm talking about. It's like bosconian but black and white I'm pretty sure and the bases are big
No idea sorry!
The game you are looking for is Bosconian. Fun fact. It was one of the first games that allowed you to continue, used a map, and allowed diagonal movement.
I wished I could find a game stick with all this games or some other console that would have all this good ones not the Chinese copycats....
It's a shame most of the footage is pixellated, which kind of ruins the point of vector graphics.
Because it's emulated, no way to avoid that.
The linked video stole your content: ua-cam.com/video/DDm0gVn2xAU/v-deo.html
Sound booms out to end I thought my headphones were screwed thumbs down
The volume level is set the same through the whole video, it has been up years and you are the only person who has mentioned this - sounds like the problem is yours!
@@TheLairdsLair If anything, I have the opposite problem...but I think that's mainly because one or two of the games run silent or with miminal sounds. :-)
