The Gleno Dam was an arch dam located in the Scalve Valley, in the Orobie Alps, Lombardy, Italy. Constructed between 1916 and 1923, its construction was an ambitious project aimed at providing hydroelectric power. However, in December 1923, due to severe structural defects, the dam collapsed, causing a catastrophe that resulted in the death of approximately 356 people. This disaster led to increased scrutiny on dam safety and influenced regulations for the construction of hydroelectric works in Italy. The dam was subsequently dismantled, but its tragic memory remains an important part of Italian engineering history and collective memory. The tragedy of the Gleno Dam remains engraved in the collective memory as one of the most serious disasters related to dam construction in Italy.
