Capitan Roberts was an amazing man! Thank you a lot for telling us your story here abut how you were breaking Lorenz - Hitler's top level cipher system. Lorenz was much important cipher than Enigma. Incredible breaking the communications between the German field generals and the Central Military High Command and Head of State Imagine reading Roosevelt, Churchill or Stalin’s communications to their generals for how powerful this intelligence was
It goes the other way. Rommel was receiving Allied orders of Battle. This is hardly ever discussed. There was an Italian in the American Embassy in Rome who was seeing Allied Communications which showed the " When and Where's " of Allied movements and logistic support. The Italian spy had great success because the Americans were soft and Arrogant which aloud the Germans to out maneuver the British time and again. Churchill knew there must be a leak in the Allied Communications that showed their Orders of Battle in the Desert. Rommel had great success with a small force. The Afrika Korps was not even an under strength Army. So Allied Security in the Mediterranean, Italy and all Allied Embassies were brought up to strength. Finally the spy was found and aloud to receive misinformation. Rommel's great success as the Allied populations were concerned was chalked up to his Great Fighting skill and Martial prowess. Yes he was a gifted Soldier but he was being fed the Allied Order of Battle and logistic support. So the tables were turned due to the people at Bletchley. The Room 40 boys and Joan Clarke fighting their own war supplied the Fighting Forces on the ground with a Weapon worth 10 Nuclear bombs. Monty received this info and made great use of it. The fuel carrying ships were sunk every time outside of Tobruk and denied the Afrika Korps with much needed fuel and supplies. Fuel , Ammo , food and fresh potable water were denied to the Germans. This had such an effect on Rommel's Korps it soon lost its fighting capacity. Rommel was defeated in the Dessert. Total collapse. Rommel was in Germany for this collapse and saved for the upcoming invasion of Europe.
CANUSA Kommando .....No such thing in Rome....the Italian secret service entered the US Embassy using their own set of keys, including to the Embassadors safe, where they removed and copied his Diplomatic code book, returning it to the safe......then passing the copy of that code book on to the German Army Abwehr secret service "for a fee"........Read the NEW book...."The Third Reich is Listening-German code-breaking in World War Two by author Christian Jennings, released and published in October 2018.....(also outlines the ten (10) completely different and seperately run, (with no cooperation between them throughout the war), of German secret cryptographic services of different agencies.......also read The TICOM Archives....! Recognition was the LAST thing these people wanted after the war! Imagine how many ex spies, generals, admirals etc. would blame their defeat on these people. People serving on the front lines, where defeat means the death of comrades, humiliation, and the loss or destruction of ones own homeland, are not likely to appreciate the great intellectual achievement made by these men. They be quite happy to see them hanged! Anonymity was their best hope for a long normal life. It was also the best way of keeping the secret from the Russians who were typing away on captured German code machines for another 10 years or so.
True, colossus 2 was moved to GCHQ and used to decipher Russian transmissions for many years, hence why only Enigma was declassified, while Tunney/ Lorenz remained classified for another 50 years

But what else is he doing himself by not saying a word about THE OTHER THREE KEY MEN IN BREAKING GERMAN CODES? Even no single mention or 'thank you' from you. That's really, really sad... :( And they are: Marian Rejewski, Henryk Zygalski, Jerzy Różycki - who actually have breaken the code long before War and presented all their knowledge in the summer 1939 to the British Intelligence who visited Poland.

JR was involved in the much more complicated 'Tunny' cipher and not related to the Enigma; while the Polish contribution was invaluable for the initial entry into Enigma, it had little to do with the Lorenz system, so the gentleman is entirely correct with his accreditations.

The Poles built a German Army/Airforce 3 rotor Steckerbrett Enigma replica derived from only an operators manual and some other documents. Then using mathematical permutations derived the 3 rotor wirings. They then broke the key structure. They also built the first electro-mechanical machine which they called the "Bomba" to assist in cracking the keys more quickly. As the Poles were reading the German messages they knew Poland would fall so ... On the 25th July 1939 the Poles gave a Replica Enigma, their notes and decryption techniques and a "Bomba" to Commander Alastair Denniston, Dilly Knox, and Commander Humphrey Sandwith of British CG&CS. The British used that to design, mathematics and notes to build a similar and superior machine. The Brits named their new machine the "Bombe" presumably as a nod to the Poles. However the "Bombe" was never successful in breaking the German Navy Enigma keys, the Brits did however decode the Navy messages using captured Navy key books. The Poles in exile may not have worked on directly the Lorenze (code named Tunny) cipher but they continued to work closely with the Brits on many cryptanalysis projects.
you forgot to mention how the poles kept shtum about it for 6 yrs. After the fall of poland, they worked for the french vichy govt, and then for the polish govt in excile in the uk, where they were deciphering russian communications
the term "wolf pack" was an American term but it seemed a good one here. Churchill kept the work at Bletchley a secret and perhaps that is why the ..Americans made the computer
To a degree yes. British WW2 computers were national secrets, and were supposed to remain so for 99 years. However, Britain still had developments like the Manchester mk 1
As part of his plan to get America to join the war, Churchill decided to share Britain's intelligence with America (never-before had two countries shared their own intelligence) and from then both sides were the working on German codes by similar methods.

I went to Bletchley a few weeks ago. I am totally in awe of these people and the outstanding contribution they all made shortening the war.
