  • The Italian Military Wool Surplus Blanket is one of the tops in the wool blanket game. Italian Military 100% Wool Surplus Blankets are made of 100% wool, and weigh about 5lbs, with having a size of 60"/65" x 80"/85" depending. The Italian Military Wool Surplus Blanket is woven very tightly compared to others, and will last much longer due to its dense nature, along with hemmed edges for high durability and longevity. You can expect to spend a premium at current time for these Italian Military Wool Surplus Blankets, around $50 each, but if they are under $30 is when I would pull the triggers as there are other great wool blankets like the Polish Wool Blanket, Czech Wool blanket, etc. As long as it is constructed good and at least 5lbs with hemmed edges, it will most likely be a good blanket. Berz Rating: 91/100
    Polish one I speak of in the video for $19.99 at the moment:

    I would have either, both will be great. If you want something to last longer, the Italian is woven tighter. I am testing out the warmth qualities of these soon, like I did with the Israeli one in the past.

    Bought some Italian military wool blankets recently from Sportsmans guide. they were white with Blue striping. Great blankets, tight weave. ive teamed them with my Bulgarian Military Officers wool blanket again from the guide. The Bulgarian blankets are awesome 100% wool thick, looser weave for better warmth retention. combined ive been down to -20°f below zero. harder to find quality surplus wool blankets.

    Really enjoyed your Italian blanket video! I bought a few of these 20 years ago when you could get great surplus - cheap! I did not get a lot since i focused serious buying the authenic Swiss Army blankets which i now have about 200 of them all pristine! YOUR Italian blanket is the best rival to the Swiss for all the reasons you say - especially that of density. Sure - fluff or loft is nice but is not at all practicle in bivouac where your wool blanket is expected to get wet with abrasion. Your dense Italian blanket will dry much faster than fluff. If mud is a problem - just rinse it without soap - drip drain and hang it out to dry - cant do that so quick with a nice fluffy trapper or cabin blanket, which i also amassed a pre-war collection. For having so many Swiss Army blankets i still buy them for the same reasons you promote your Italian and, pay dearly for them but when unpacked and view the sheer quality - quickly i forget whatever i paid. Keep building your collection and focus on the best of quality and what YOU like!

    Glad to help out. I say get that polish one on sportsmans guide, let it outside a day to air out, but that is the bang for your buck.

    Same. I've got 3 airing out in the back yard as we speak. We'll see how long it takes to get rid of the smell.

    Once again, Great Video. I'm actively looking for a non-blend wool blanket here in Vegas but the choices are slim. I had to make due with blends and feel the difference with them. Now I know what to look for exactly.

    I just bought some US Army blankets...true they are only 65% wool, but they are still pretty good. Thanks for a great review of other (and better) blankets.

      If the tag says 65/35, they are 100% Wool. That percentage is the type of wool (reprocessed vs virgin wool), not a wool blend.

    They have Israeli Wool Blankets on Budk for $20. I couldn't tell you how the quality is but it has one good review from a guy that says it kept him dry in a down pour

    Alpaca stuff is the shit! I love it, just got a few pairs socks and they are better than wool at keeping my feet warm, which I always have cold feet.

  • @CaptainBerz
    @CaptainBerz  12 років тому

    They are hard to find at 100% wool. As Landshark said below, the more compact or dense the less warm it should be. I would get the Polish or Czech ones, they are really warm. The Italian one is just way to freaking expensive.

    I got the same Italian blanket at Cabela's for $12 each. I got 6 of them. They are not as big as I would have liked. I am only 5' 10" tall and I have a hard time getting it over my feet and head when wrapped in it. It is a solid, good, thick blanket though.

    It stands to reason that the polish blanket might provide more dead space insulation with a looser weave than that of the Italian product for a far better cost.

    I used to be able to pick em up at the local surplus for $15
    They still have em but for $28
    I just picked up 3 for a couple guys in my civil war reenactor unit
    They are the best you can buy

    Bought the Italian one on eBay early in 2013 for @ $39.99 plus $12 s&h. It reeked of mothballs, almost smelling like diesel fuel when I first got it. Washed it in woolite then into my dryer for 30 min to soften it up, finished the drying on a clothesline. ANOTHER wash in woolite, then JUST line dry in the sunshine for a few DAYS, & the smell is gone. I've used this blanket almost every night since then & it's worth every penny. If I bug-out, it's the only thing I'm taking not already packed

    I agree with the fast drying, but once wet acrylic, etc, will not keep you that warm. Like I said in the video, I like the less dense Polish one better..lol

    You looking for something that is ok in bad weather? If so then get 100% wool, most the US one you will find are 80%. But I like the Israeli, Polish, Italian, Czech ones myself. Most things 100% wool are good, in the surplus blanket game..

  • @LandsharkTank
    @LandsharkTank 12 років тому

    You carry that heavy stuff? More power to you.
    As a general rule fluffy = warmer, so theoretically speaking, the less densely woven thicker blanket has more air volume and should be warmer but unless you have some sort of windproof shell you might loose alot of that advantage through convection. And as long as the blend isn't mixed with cotton, you may gain an advantage of faster drying time with negligible if any reduction in insulating value.

    That Polish blanket looks a lot like the Russian blanket I bought last year.... same yellowish binding on two ends. I aired it out in the sun for nearly a week, and it still stunk too bad to keep it in my car. A year later, it still reeks of toxic mothball chems.
    Hopefully those Polish ones stink less than mine.

    What do you know about Alpaca wool? Supposedly its lighter & warmer than sheep wool, also less itchy. Might buy both and test it out when wet.

    Great video man. I wear a lot of wool, living in a very cold place, but didnt know much about what to look for as far as blankets go. Good info. I didnt hear you mention US issue blankets, what is your opinion of them? Thanks for any info.

  • @CaptainBerz
    @CaptainBerz  12 років тому

    The Russian ones as not that big. Kinda on the small side from what I have seen, and it is hard to find 100% wool in them, mostly blended..

    Holy shit got the blankets dry cleared and they've been hanging out side for a week, sprayed them with febrezel, and they still kind of smell like moth balls, was anyone actually able to get the blanket 100% smell free?

    • @CaptainBerz
      @CaptainBerz  11 років тому

      Yea, they have to be outside in the sun. UV breaks down the chemicals. Washing and dry cleaning and Febreezing makes it worse.

      Well... it'll take quite a while.. I've left mine outside, sprayed it with an odor neutralizing spray (forgot the kind but worked great with pet stains and what not) and after quite a while it smells normal with no stink and I use it as an over blanket during the winter haha.
