- Gilbert Doctorow is a professional Russia watcher and actor in Russian affairs going back to 1965. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College (1967), a past Fulbright scholar, and holder of a Ph.D. with honors in history from Columbia University (1975).
After completing his studies, Mr. Doctorow pursued a business career focused on the USSR and Eastern Europe. For twenty-five years he worked for US and European multinationals in marketing and general management with regional responsibility.
From 1998-2002, Doctorow served as the Chairman of the Russian Booker Literary Prize in Moscow. During the 2010-2011 academic year, he was a Visiting scholar of the Harriman Institute, Columbia University.
Since 2008, Mr. Doctorow has been regularly publishing analytical articles about international affairs on the portal of the Belgian daily La Libre Belgique. From this material he produced four collections of essays, the most recent of which appeared in October 2017: "Does the United States Have a Future?"
Mr. Doctorow’s next project will be a memoir of his corporate service in Moscow in the wild 1990s.
Mr. Doctorow is an American citizen and a long-time resident of Brussels, Belgium.

Completely stunned that people like Gilbert Doctorow seriously believe there would be any real change in either US foreign policy or its domestic affairs! On what basis would that be possible when it’s the corporate donors that buy all presidential campaigns and then dictate any policies they want while their chosen candidates legislate and regulate in their favour? He, who pays the piper and all that! Or does he seriously believe that DT will drain the swamp? Please!
Humans can only take so much reality and when it becomes unbearable they change the narrative in their head. They get faith.

When confronted with an individual who causes you to question question your own established thinking, research that person from other sources.
Gilbert Doctorow is a Russian scholar. US political landscape is polarized and chaotic to say the least. He is bringing us an optimistic point of view of Trump and Vance from a Russian perspective.
The US elevated itself to position of "policeman of the world". But let's ask, who would want to live in a city where the police acts like the US? I certainly would not want to live in that city.

Judging by comments, people love or hate Dr. Doctorow depending on whether they agree with a particular opinion. If you aren't willing to listen to opinions other than your own then you have no capacity to learn. I like Dr. Doctorow because he makes me think, even if I don't agree with his opinion. He is a great political analyst and worth listening to, otherwise go back to your echo chamber.

I am disappointed that neither Nima nor Doctorow raise the issue of Gaza and the zionism of Vance and Trump. Other people have commented that it's racism. I think that all these pundits MUST realize that there is no peace for the Atlanticists without peace in Eurasia. I doubt if I'll come back to these two men.

I thought it would be devoted to peace and freedom - but it’s turning into a MAGA platform- and totally avoiding the Palestinian people in Gaza and pretending that Trump is not a committed Zionist. I appreciate Doctorow's instincts -- clearly his heart is in the right place, but I think he is way too optimistic about Trump.
Vance deserves very high marks for daring to side with workers against big corporations at a Republican convention. And I do think he showed hints of genuine realism about the futility of war with Russia and China (unfortunately, nothing similar about Gaza). But VPs have no real power in our system, and Trump is both a supply-side elitist on domestic economic matters and a devotee of extractive colonialism. I will be amazed if he can settle the Ukraine War on terms acceptable to the ruthless US Establishment, and even more so if he can meaningfully help working people.
Doctorow is also right that Trump was brutally hamstrung by the Establishment -- but people of character and commitment find ways to overcome that sort of thing. Trump was lazy and uncommitted -- quite satisfied to sling divisive rhetorical tweet-bombs, and completely unwilling to work hard to get working class people of color on his side. This played directly into the hands of the Establishment. God bless him if he does a better job this time around, but his acceptance speech last night did not change my mind in the slightest. He appears to have learned nothing.
Hope I'm wrong and Doctorow is right, but I won't be betting on it.

To better understand this message, it is necessary to read his 2016 book (his memoirs), "Hillbilly Elegy" brought to the screen in the film of the same name starring Glenn Close.
Hillbilly in Ohio means a common worker who earned a good salary in the 60s but as a result of the opening with China many factories were closed (now called "Rustbelt" or "rust belt of factories") lives in poverty and Vance, graduated Ph.D. Sum Cum Laude in Law at Yale (an exclusive US university, I understand that paid by the US Navy, after serving there for 2 years. He was in Iraq) he considers himself part of the hillbillys because he was born, grew up among them, shared his sufferings and does NOT consider himself one of the upper class of the USA even though he lives among them and has decided to help them in any way possible and therefore considers it stupid that the United States is sending hundreds of billions of dollars to Ukraine instead of investing them in its own people. Unfortunately, like Trump, they do support Israel.

I’m unsure about Vance, yeah he was a marine correspondent for 6 months in Iraq used the G I bill to get through Ohio state, got a Batchelor of Arts, Philosophy and Political Science, (2009) Yale (2009-2011) ..Juris Doctor and met his wife Usha there , she’s first generation Hindu Indian, they’ve 3 kids, she’s very intelligent and supportive of her husband…dual faith marriage as he’s catholic..so he’s a religiously tolerant.

Real politics is a challenging game which often requires some compromise. If I am determined to vote for someone who doesn't violate my principles I will vote for Jill Stein, but of the candidates who "have a chance," all are bad on Israel/Palestine, Trump and RFK Jr. are better on Ukraine and for those wanting to be realistic about how best to avoid nuclear war, Doctoro, Ritter and Greenwald make an important case, IMO. I haven't noticed any of the complainers here say who they plan to vote for or explain why.

You know I actually was assigned to reed Hillbilly Eulogy in some college class, thankfully I didn't have to actually read it as I dropped the class I believe but I did read some of it later but never finished it. I didn't think much of it. Kind of dull a bit, and not the best writing. It didnt hook me in any way. Interesting coming to know that that book was from this guy JD Vance.
I agree with the majority of commentators, and I am not hopeful for these right wing nationalistic politics. I personally think it's in the globalists plans: this development and turning because the globalists realize the already powerful formulation of BRICs and the power of China and even Russia because of the Ukraine war but also because of the acceleration of the advancement of BRICs (also due to the Ukraine war). It's all a bloody competition for resources and for the corporate class to put a crackdown, -> supporting fascist like political powers and people in Governments instead of letting socialism forment or come to be which is positively nationalistic instead of zero sum. Techno dystopia is what we are heading towards instead of something like eco-socialism and the development of such like the circular economy/circular economics which is necessary to reduce plain ole' resource scarcity concerns going forward (in terms of real world economics and humanity on the earth).

I say this as a Christian myself, but to me this radical Christian nationalism ranks up there as one of the most dangerous ideological cul-de-sacs one can trap themselves into. I confess to finding Dr. Doctorov somewhat naive in this interview. I would love him to be right but, to me, Vance is yet another opportunistic chameleon who will be anything that he is paid to be. Incorrect. In Christianity it's clear that Jesus is the only way to God. He is their Messiah. It is only Judaism that doesn't believe that Jesus is the Messiah. Islam also agrees that he is the Messiah but like you only worship G-d alone.

Gilbert Doctorow makes a very good case. I applaud his ability to maintain an open mind and revise assessments. I have not heard Vance's speech in opposition to continuing the catastrophe in Ukraine, but along with Doctorow I am delighted to find that Vance rejects inane historical analogies and draws the right lessons from history. I did hear Vance's convention speech, and it seemed like a lot more than boilerplate to me.
I wish I could believe all of this...and more. Remains to be seen what we will actually live through with Trump/Vance in power.
I admire and respect your fine guest Dr. Doctorow but I am afraid he is being a bit optimistic about Trump (who I support). I hope Trumps foreign policy is based on reason as your guest suggests . I hope Trump is making tactical decisions when he openly associates with the utterly despicable Mike Pompeo. I hope your guest is right. I pray to God that his analysis of Trump is right.
As the Dr. comment, Trump is not a genius and Trump is not a fool either.
However, looking back those others --- Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis ---- Trump is indeed better than them.

In some ways, Trump's experience during his first presidency reminds me of Putin's experience when initially negotiating with the West in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Both men seem to have been relatively naive, placing trust in people who proved to be untrustworthy: Trump with the likes of Pompeo and Bolton and Putin with Merkel and other Western leaders. Neither man understood the depth of the teachery that confronted them. Rather they operated in good faith and expected the same from their counterparts. Turned out to be a huge mistake. Both learned the hard way that others are not like themselves, not people of good faith and integrity.
I'm sure Eric Voegelin would consider Trump a man "of good faith and integrity" - if he had been lobotomized first.

I sense that Doctorow is being quite optimistic. At this point this seems all we jave. The US empire will collapse (as do all empires) in which case it's inevitable that it's foreign policy will change drastically (whether that's it's intent or not- it'll be the result).

Hopefully Dr. Doctorow will limit his comments to his area of expertise, namely Russia. When he ventures into US politics, Israel, Gaza and Iran, he loses his credibility. OMG.
