- The Electronic Intifada’s Ali Abunimah was issued with a legal order by the German government banning him from giving this speech via Zoom to the Palestine Conference in Exile, organized by supporters of Palestinian rights in Germany on 25-26 July 2024. The order threatened Abunimah with fines and up to one year in prison for participating in the conference. He did so anyway.

In 1917, the British occupied Palestine and Iraq. Following the agreement concluded a year earlier (Sykes-Picot Agreement), Great Britain was given the Mesopotamia Mandate. This included today's Iraq, as well as Palestine, the southern part of Syria and Jordan
The British Mandate over Palestine, i.e. the British Mandate over Palestine, was a mandate of the United Nations, which was transferred to Great Britain after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and after the First World War. The Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Jordan, Israel and Transjordan were created on the former mandated territory.
During the First World War, the British had guaranteed the Palestinian Arabs that they could establish an independent kingdom. At the same time, they had promised the Zionists that they could establish a Jewish state in Palestine. These concessions were intended to ensure that the respective population groups guaranteed their support for the British.
The so-called Faisal-Weizmann Agreement was intended to define the new state borders for the planned Arab kingdom and the Jewish state. However, this part of the agreement never came into force. One part that did come into force, however, was the part that allowed Jewish citizens to immigrate to Palestine.
In the 1920s, around 100,000 Jewish citizens immigrated to Palestine. Jewish associations bought up Palestinian land. This was leased exclusively to Jews on the condition that only Jews were allowed to work on this land.
The fear of conflict proved to be justified. Both the Zionists and the Arab population were still trying to assert their own independent state. This led to several violent clashes, some of which ended in massacres.
The restriction of the Jewish immigration quota led to great rejection of the Jewish population by the Arab population and the British Mandate. This in turn led to the formation of terrorist groups such as the Lechi and the Irgun. These groups increasingly attacked the British and the Arabs.
There is always a backstory to every conflict in the world that you should know.

I take your point though, the German people are ultimately responsible for the government they elect, and the actions that government takes in their name. The Brits are equally responsible for their government, as are the Americans for their government, and the arms sales that facilitate this genocide. Practically though, many of the electorate of those countries are against their governments actions. I'm a British passport holder, but marched against the Iraq war, and today routinely march for Palestine. The British government does not well represent the people of the UK on this matter. The polls show the population wants an immediate ceasefire, for instance. That leaves us questioning the merits of our democracies, when the will of the people is not reflected by the political elite. A huge component of this war has to do with international strategy, power in the region and trying to enforce Western hegemony. Israel is an aircraft carrier, the business end of a Western gun. In that sense, saying the Germans are responsible is not incorrect, but it doesn't reflect the nuances of the situation, it loses the context. Germans are like any other European (less funny) but there's nothing unique about their support for genocide (the origin maybe, post-Holocaust cultural guilt).
instead of paying Billions in reparations since the end of WW2 to the Jews, why not allow them to live in 1 part of Germany, that would surely absolve part of their crimes, as well as save Billions in the process. resulting in a peaceful region of the Middle East which is a powder keg.
