I dumped all my cash to the bank. With high crime like burglary going on, it’s a big risk. With the bank, yes, they may go defunct but there is the FDIC insurance.
I'm a banker and often older Asian people don't trust banks. Like theyll stash more cash in a safety deposit box than an account. I suppose it comes from experience. Middle of last century much of Asia very unstable and money was constantly being confiscated by different warlords and regimes. Not saying it wasn't a bad idea but probably something his mom or grandma might of instilled in him. Also tax avoidance is a possibility
Yes, your cash deposit in a bank is insured up to $250k. There is no reason to keep large sums of cash at home. In terms of safety boxes, FDIC DOES NOT insure the content. It only insure deposits in your savings and checking accounts. The bank is also not automatically liable in a burglary of your safety box UNLESS you can prove that they didn't take reasonable steps to prevent the burglary. Otherwise, you are out of luck.
Go with a bigger bank or credit union. The big banks that are classified as too big to fail by the government. I'm with B of A and I've see many complaints about them. But I've been with them for decades and I've never had an issue. I'm fortunate that now I am able to carry a large amount of assets with them. I don't have fees charged to me. Even when I used a 3rd party ATM machine they don't charge me for it. The only thing is that when they have CDs that are higher they don't tell me about it. I have to check up on it myself when ever a CD is maturing. I don't use their broker service as I already have an account with Charles Schwab.

Unfortunately, many banks have gotten rid of safety boxes, because they have become less in demand. Home safes are available everywhere. It's convenient, and people don't have to pay rental fees like safety boxes. If you look at the video @ 2:22, you can tell the safe is very cheap, lightweight, and not bolted down to the floor. A couple of thieves could have taken the whole safe if they wanted. Keeping $500k worth of items in your home is risky, but this is not uncommon for Asian immigrants. Many thieves target wealthy neighborhoods where there is a large population of Asians knowing there's a good chance one of them will have a safe full of valuable items.
You can not keep your home safe anymore. This was done during the day. They knew when to do it. Look within your own group. Someone told someone about all that money...
After watching a video for a man losing his life savings after investing in gold, when the depository went out of business. All the commenters were talking about hiding their gold at home and having guns. What ever the content may have been, all this is not smart on so many levels, not just the risk of theft. A safety deposit box *does not provide insurance on the content.* You have to get insurance separately. Assuming gold and cash, it's not a great investment either.
