This is like getting punched in the stomach, getting ice water poured on you, dragged by your feet by a car then finally getting pushed off a bridge. Great work.
I know it's naively hopeful, but this animation always makes me think that when the cycle finally ends, they'll be able to truly dance on that beach together, to love once more.
beauty of signalis is such that it is deliberately left out vague enough to only suggest some specific story, letting you fill out the blanks yourself and tailor the details to your preferences. I don't think it's naivety, personally I think it's a beatiful "true" end
No way, don't call yourself naive! The game is intentionally left widely open to the player's interpretation of the events that unfold within, mysterious and questions are left unanswered on purpose as it's up to you to try to piece together an answer to things based upon what you believe is happening in the world around you. Not everything lines up perfectly, with the lines between reality and it's dreaming destruction being ever further blurred naturally not everything will. But I'm of the strong belief that after all of Elster's trials and hardship (maybe even having to complete all four endings at one point or another as she loops continuously), she does in fact break the loop. Saving Ariane, Herself, Everyone else and all of reality from the twisted dream realm. And I truly believe that in whatever the aftermath of the dream may be, Elster and Ariane are together and happy at last.
no, it lets them dance together again. but elster is dead, it's a fake ending, they don't live together happily, elster forces her to dance again, and suffer from radiation more@@alexeistrife56
@@alexeistrife56I don't think so. The ending basically outright states with its "remember our promise" that you're not putting an end to anything, you're just deluding yourself by holding on to ghosts and memories, the Red Eye that's ruining everything (which is itself almost certainly Ariane) is still present. The cycle does not end, the suffering continues in the next loop. It can only end by killing her in the Promise ending.
The cinematography on this is absolutely stellar. It's like I was watching snippets of a movie. Incredible work! This is a classic I will come back to many times I'm sure.

Strange take: The song Cigarette Wife gives Elster a stronger and more sincere Doom Slayer vibe than any other game, even DOOM or ULTRAKILL (also written in all caps like SIGNALIS, coincidence??!! yeah, pareidolia. Anyhow.). The pure, unbridled focus reflected in her emotional analysis thing in the inventory, almost always in the absolute center with unshakable determination, is reflected perfectly as this song comes up in her stonefaced decent to the mines. And only at the very end, at The Promise, the ending for which you literally have to rip and tear the cycle and world within apart, we not only finally see her display the emotions of fear, uncertainty, acceptance and pure horror come out before and as she kills her, emotions we also see in other endings. We too see the slightest, most sincere and true smile as not just Elster dies, but as they get to die together. One we don't ever see in memory, leave or other ends or parts of the game. She has fought through a version of hell more real and relatable than that of DOOM, ULTRAKILL or other such games and depictions, all to truly, and my god I should become a poet, slay the doom and have a happy ending together, one they seemingly were destined by all odds not to have. Not to mention that the title "Cigarette Wife" is also very fitting, the wife, Elster, burning herself up just to give her lover that final relieve. Rip and tear. Until the promise is done. Also the cast bowing at the end like at the end of a play is very pretty, really points to what the game ultimately is: a stage play, not making perfect sense, and never wanting or needing to. All that matters are the messages it gives. Of what a society that aims to streamline personality as much as possible and an uncaring government that sees it's citizens as expendable strings of numbers does to the individual, pushing them towards a certain end in tragedy. And more subtely, of Eternity, Love, and Sacrifice. The only certain truths in a feverdream of a world, where nothing seems real, not even one self.
while I agree with most of that, I dont think nightmare psychological hellscapes created by the suffering of three individuals are exactly relatable. the losing of people, maybe. the suicide, potentially. from what I understand, Signalis is a tale where Elster dies, leaving Ariane to suffer in the cryo pod. elster, in her grief, being a composer, accidentally opens a rift to the astral plane and gets trapped there. (a different unrelated rift exists elsewhere) she sends a desperate signal pleading for Elster to wake up so she can die. this reaches Faukes (i think that's her name) and floods her with Memories not belonging to her. Faukes is overwhelmed by the sudden receival of Elster's memories so she goes into a coma, dreaming away. Elster, in her desperate state, begins to dream. this dream alters the Astral plane. the people here are real, but they also are just a dream. Faukes, in her coma, also ends up dreaming. her dreams too affect the astral plane. Faukes never fufills the promise, either not knowing of it or ignoring it intentionally, turning bitter. as Elster wakes up and begins the loop, she fails. a LOT. slowly, over time, the dream corrupts and distorts. eventually, after a lot of suffering, Elster finally eventually kills faukes, and finds her way to the ship, to finally complete her promise. this Elster isn't real. but she is as well. ... yeah, totally relatable.
I am simply going insane over this video I keep replaying it over and over again it is everything to me. In particular I'm fixated on the subtle expressiveness of the expressions- the snippets of Ariane and Elster's time in the Penrose-512, quite especially Elster's face turning into surprise when Ariane likely propositioning her for some... _fun time,_ I suppose. And god damn that scene where Elster one-handedly cocks her pistol is simply mwah, _chef's kiss._ And the end scene with the lily from the artifact ending, with the two of their hands showing wedding rings as Elster reaches out to hold Ariane's hand and Ariane softly brushing Elster's hand with her thumb is just AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Coming back to this animation 10 months later, I have to say that this is still my absolute favorite fan animation on Signalis. It is beautiful and you did a phenomenal job.
this was so amazing and beautiful! I saw your old zelda video and wondered what you were doing after 7 years to find the most amazing animation i've ever seen, I hope you continue to follow what your heart loves and creates!!
I should mention I dont know anything about signalis but im gonna after this!!
@@thatonefunanon391so…? Found anything about signalis?
@@mniakan754 it is a video game that i want very much!! looks really cool and the way u play is how u get different endings rather than through dialogue and such which sounds awesome!
@@thatonefunanon391 I know about the game and it’s actually one of my favorites of all time, what I meant was what was your experience with the game?
@@mniakan754 i cant afford to buy games rn, I'm saving up. I'm very excited to play someday tho!!
how fucking beautiful
Amazing work! The timing, the cuts, superb!
God-tier cinematography!
Beautiful. Brings me to tears.
This animation is so beautiful and left me empty inside. it could have been straight out of the game. thank you
I'm amazed. I wish more people would experience this master piece of a story.
Meticulous thought and attention given to every detail whilst maintaining its retro aesthetic. Flawless work.
I think I'd speak for everyone that a Signalis movie of this design and standard would be a must watch, though we'd understand the work that would take.
YOU TOOK MY HEART AWAY
My favorite part of this (aside from just being really well made) is the implication that even in the midst of an interplanetary civil war, in a far off galaxy, full of space ships and android soldiers, the Browning Hi-Power is still in widespread use.
Love this entire animation, it's so beautifully well done. And that one handed pull back on the pistol's slide was fantastic. Very satsifying.
I know this is major copium, but the scene of them sleeping at 2:07 makes me hope that all of SIGNALIS was just elster's nightmare
Also i just realized this was made on my 17th birthday!
YO WHAT !???! THIS IS SPECTACULAR GREAT JOB
This game enjoys ripping my heart into pieces, and those pieces into pieces, over and over
I HATE YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS BUT I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!
I am now fed and Depressed.
I just want them to be happy…..
I've been thinking about this for weeks. So amazing how well you've captured the style of signalis... and the way you showed the love between elster and ariane. oh my god. oh my God. the transition from the dance to elster falling. oh my god
This is beautiful and went above and bound what i expected, amazing work
LIZ BE DROPPING BANGER
man that one handed press check
the crack of the bullets when it zooms out and the report
the waltz and the wonderful animation of love
this animation casts shadow upon my door and i can never release its burden
this is amazing
I-I’m not crying I swear… I’m… I’m not… *sob* *sob* *sniff*
Yup and I’m crying, thanks
i can't put into words how much i liked your work. truly magnificent. thank you for giving this to us.
