    For those who don't want to go "sponge free", cellulose ones would be something to look into. They (surprisingly) last a lot longer than plastic ones before they start to desintegrate and they can be compostet afterwards. It's a challenge finding ones without plastic wrapping, though. I'm glad to hear the wood brushes are holding up so well, though. I'm planning to get those when my current plastic ones die, but I've been somewhat worried that the bristles might not hold up to scrubbing very well.

    Great video....just a friendly tip for those who want to make comments about her nail polish, that she isn't fully zero waste, etc. AT LEAST SHE'S DOING SOMETHING. I think the only way to be ZERO waste is when we return to the ground when we pass. So I say, keep up the good work and continue to help those who wish to do there part to protect the planet and environment.

    Here in switzerland, one supermarket launched a "Veggi Bag" recently. You can put in your fruits and vegetables, weigh them and put the barcodelabel on it. They are made from polyester and can be washed and reused.

    Hi Sophie, this is a really helpful video. I'm in the very early stages of trying to do what you do but am still very much a beginner! Avoiding packaging seems to be a bit of a nightmare, but you encourage me to keep trying! I use a lot of frozen veg as, being on my own, I can't use fresh veg quickly enough before it goes off. Also I'm on a tight budget. But I hate that the packaging is not recyclable. You are getting me to rethink how I do this though. I'd also like to get back into sprouting, after seeing this, which I used to do a long time ago but gradually forgot about! Keep doing videos like this please! :)

    Im sorry to tell you, but many cardboard boxes are covered with plastic foil for hygiene reasons. *at least in germany* Those are not possible to recycle cause its too difficult to divide the cardboard from the plastic to have actually any benefits. Maybe there is a shop nearby ur place selling loose stuff. Or u can go to the farmers market, or u really look closely at those boxes if they are actually 100% cardboard...

    What shops do you go to to get dry goods in the uk that are not covered in plastic? I'm finding it very difficult to find anywhere, even the organic health stores have plastic packaging.

    • @blueollis
      @blueollis  7 років тому

      The UK has a lot of catching up to do in terms of bulk stores. It's not always possible to buy zero waste products, but do your best by buying in bulk (the largest amount always has less plastic) and opt for recyclable packaging where possible. I buy a lot of things online in bulk and get most of my spices from an Indian super mart.

    • @blueollis
      @blueollis  7 років тому +1

      Good question. I buy in bulk because then it's the least amount of packaging possible (there aren't any bulk bin stores in London yet... although that would be my first port of call if there were!). I always opt for recyclable packaging like cardboard, paper, cotton, hemp, glass. If that's not available I'll go for the largest quantity to minimise the amount of plastic waste as much as possible. I also buy from local fruit and veg producers who do deliver it to my door with zero packaging. I hope this helps!

    • @leowest5043
      @leowest5043 7 років тому +1

      Sophie Ollis hi! I really enjoy your videos. I too am on a zero waste journey. I live in London and I've found that there actually quite a few places which have bulk bins. Whole foods in Kensington is not as expensive as it may seem. It's great for dried grains, beans, nuts and seeds as well as loose tea and coffee. There are also some bins at e5 bakehouse in hackney which has a few grains but mostly nuts and seeds. They also do flour, sugar and salt from bulk. My local corner shop, arsenal food and wine, has some bulk bins and ecover refils. There is a shop in Brixton village market where I've found dried pasta loose and local Italian delis which do fresh pasta. Borough wines do refills of wine (and some do oil/vinegar as well) as well as Clapton craft (beer/wine). Brixton whole food (different to whole foods market) is the most amazing shop for any herb/spice you could want. I've also found kofali hotnuts at Manor House has a great selection of dried fruit and nuts, and you can get loose olives and things like sun dried tomatoes at loads of shops along green lanes. Check out eco boost also. She had a channel here on UA-cam and has written a blog post about all the places in London that can help (though I've tried some of the places she suggests to no avail). I realise these places are all over London so I tend to stock up when I go, or stop in when I'm in the area anyway. Let me know how you get on. And if you find anywhere else :)

    • @blueollis
      @blueollis  7 років тому

      Thank you so much for commenting! I, unfortunately, don't live near many of these places but I'll be sure to check some out when I am nearby.

    • @blueollis
      @blueollis  7 років тому +1

      good question! After washing them out I leave the lid off while I store them to air out. If they still smell you can add a little baking soda which will absorb the rest of the smell. I had this problem at first, too, as I like pickles and chutneys!

    The so called "cardboard" carton you point out as recyclable, is in fact almost impossible to recycle. As it is combined with card, foil and plastic go line the carton, becomes a waste of time to separate. There are only a handful of recycling plants that can handle said cartons and even those plants may not even be able to sort them and in turn tossed to landfill

    Btw: bio-plastic bags are actually NOT compostable! They pick them out at the composting facilities, because they don't biodegrade in the time span that industrial compost facilities process compostables. I buy most of my foods from my local green grocer. It's always loose and they charge by number or weight. You can find green grocers all over (you don't have a go to fancy places to buy loose groceries... have a walk around your local neighbourhood, I'm sure you'll find some). Otherwise, if I'm at a supermarket, I buy as many things loose as possible.

    where do you buy in bulk from, is it central London?? also I love the labels on your jars, do your make them yourself??

    • @blueollis
      @blueollis  7 років тому +1

      I buy in bulk online and around London (a lot of my spices are from Wembley). I would suggest always buying in the largest quantity if you can't find it without plastic so that you're minimising as much as possible (and is usually a much better deal, too).

      Sophie Ollis so does that mean when you bulk buy online you're still receiving your products in plastic packaging? Is that the best way for you at the moment?
      I'm so curious and fascinated by the whole zero waste idea, I'm going to try to do this at my best!

    Btw: for some reason I didnt come up with the idea how to replace plastic sponges but that makes much more sens to use a brush. Thanks! Also: Tin might be better for the environment but there are studies that food stored in these containers is very harmful to your body 😘 But I know. Sometimes it seems as if every decision you make comes with. Price :/

    • @blueollis
      @blueollis  7 років тому +1

      Yes, tins contaminate the food and so it's always best to buy cardboard packaging for a more eco-friendly AND healthy alternative!

    • @nilenefer
      @nilenefer 7 років тому +3

      I believe this kind of cardboard packaging is not just paper layers unfortunately. it's several plastic and paper layers bonded together - such as Tetra Pak in the US. it does not biodegrade and needs special recycling :[

    I keep all my grains and pulses in glass jars but I am unable to source lentils etc that are in recyclable packaging :( I have tried looking everywhere for years now. Does anyone know how to source them?

    • @blueollis
      @blueollis  7 років тому

      It's difficult to find these things without plastic packaging. Your best bet would be to find them in health food stores in the bulk bin section (and bring your own jar to fill up) or to buy them in large quantities to reduce the amount of waste.

    • @blueollis

      Since I live with other people I use Ecover washing up liquid (ethical and I can refill the bottles at a local health food store). Otherwise I'd probably make my own.

    I didn't think nail polish was zero waste?

    • @blueollis
      @blueollis  7 років тому +3

      You can buy non-toxic nail polishes that come in recyclable packaging. I have to say, though, that I haven't worn nail polish very often in a couple of years and haven't at all for a couple of months and I quite like the way my nails look bare.
