I've never had an MRE, but I had a factory coworker from the Army Reserve who brought one in for lunch one day. This was back in the 90s and the MREs were different back then. She pulls out this dark brown plastic pouch and I wasn't expecting much, but there was this little lunch tray and all of a sudden she was pulling a full spaghetti dinner out of that pouch complete with garlic bread and laying it all out on the tray! It looked as good as restaurant food and had me drooling! lol. I wasn't expecting it to look that good.
I’m glad you saw the “rock or something” and also found it amusing, lol. I was in the Army until 2011. The MRE’s did get better every year. But at like 2,000 a package, they are meant for high energy days. Also will clog up your pooper for days-that’s what the gum is for. So, my dad developed the retort pouch that mre's are in and when he was trying to see which foods tasted the best in them, we got to try them all. Chili Mac was by far the best, but they also had a chicken a la king back then that was really good. So weird to see how far they've come since then. When my father died, we had mre's for our post funeral meal. Lol. We had all the varieties the army makes. It was a fun.
@@shubhamvashist8529 it was..we wanted to honor him and his accomplishment..he received no compensation for his work outside of his regular salary, yet he and another man changed the world through their invention. Retort pouches are all over the place. The company he worked for sold it to the U.S. Army and that was the end of it. When he died it was just fitting that we serve them. It was cool trying all of the new stuff.
I got M&M's in an MRE once, and they definitely weren't like normal M&M's. They tasted very heat resistant or something. I hear the Chili Mac one is pretty good. The calories in one of these should sustain you for a good part of a day. They pack them with calories for a reason.
Tip: When your adding water to the heater, add just a tiny bit. Then roll the bag up from bottom to top and wait a couple of seconds. And you will have the hottest heater possible. Be careful because that mf will scorch your fingers off. When the heater cools down, just roll it again. And you have a scorching heater again. Surprising how many others in the military i have taught this to. But, iv never seen them do it another way after they learned this trick
During this pandemic my family was given a bunch of military food and we enjoyed it and it was conversation starter to every different item. We were grateful indeed ❤ i never thought i love peanut butter more the way those packets have them. Like gourmet exquisite food if you read in the back it tells you where it comes from.
I mean it actually looks good, really surprised that they focused so much an the nutrients. I have friends in the army and in my country you just get a lot of carbs and very little of anything else lol
Exactly, or don’t want to see any innocent person killed because of distracted driving. Love your videos Mav, but you have a responsibility to be “responsible”, on the road.
The funniest thing ive ever seen you do was acting like that shaver was actually having a hard time cutting through those little whiskers lmao. Love you man!!
My favorite parts of an MRE were the "chocolate beverage", Chicklets, and crackers with the anemic-looking cheese spread. Oh, and the tiny bottle of Tobasco sauce lovingly tucked into each meal... LOL
Mav. Big fan. But please drive more careful. I’d hate to see something bad happen, not because of you, but something you can’t control. Stay safe my dude.
As a vet I can say they have improved a lot over the years, Their not light on calories because of how active military is expected to be, also could be 1 mre a day in bad circumstances…
Favorite MRE is the southwest, We now have first strike rations in addition to MREs that are meant to sustain us for 24hours They have 4000 calories per Along with caffeinated things like pudding, Gum, gel, and other stuff.
Love your videos, watch them every time after dinner But dude, stay safe, keep your hands on the wheel while filming Also the spoons from these mres are really nice, you should keep em
chicken chunks and beef stew are the best ones by far. with chicken chunks you put everything it comes with in the tortilla and the beef stew has the best snacks. sour skittles and a vanilla cake
Mav I want to say thank you. I started watching this video as soon as it was posted yesterday and I'm just now finishing it this morning. I pulled it up like 4 times to try and get through it during my night as entertainment and it just was a constant item in my watch later waiting for me. I appreciate your effort, the editing, the extra footage that wastes gas and daylight, everything. Thank you because your content helps other people
I feel so anxious watching you opening and showing off the MRE not touching the steering wheel or looking at the road. Please be careful, I'm sure you know what you are doing but damn it's terrifying to watch. Love your videos Mav
hey there! army combat engineer here, in the field we usually eat them cold and that’s how they made us do it in boot camp so you get used to it. MREs are like 3,000 calories per bag so we’re usually only allowed to have 2 a day, props to you for eating 3😂
Holy Shit, no one is commenting on keeping at least one hand on your steering wheel. I realize you might have modern lane monitoring but machines can malfunction. At 70mph, not enough time to compensate if something screws up, imo.
As fast as we eat it(sugar) we burn it off(great energy source), well I did at least being in the Infantry so I can only speak on behalf of the US Army infantry. Tabasco sauce was always a go to for pretty much every meal to add some extra flavor (in some case add flavor in general). Great video.
When you remember what these meals are used for, emergencies etc. you realize why they’re so high sugar high carb loaded. They may not taste the best but they do have to have a long shelf life. Some of them pack bread that is good for 20 years or more. So you can imagine all the preservatives in them as well. Not the best but better than starving.
Mav, obviously you were raised by parents who enjoyed a very wide variety of food, and introduced you to them. I was too. I remember in Navy boot camp totally enjoying the enormous variety of foods to choose from at chow. I was shocked listening to the other girls complaining through every meal about the food. "That's nasty," was the phrase most used. Their favorite thing to complain about was the taties with the skins still on. "That's nasty." The food was excellent. We did not eat MREs. We ate on the chow line, with everything you can think of for breakfast, and great meals!! It doesn't surprise me that the MREs are good too. Food is one way to help keep moral up!
@@marcusgomez3307 Which branch of the service did you serve in? Your demeaning reply is about soldiers. I was a Sailer. I bet there are plenty who could whip your a$$.
I’m so paranoid that something can happen while driving on cruise control or whatever it’s called. I just can’t drive like that or get used to the idea of giving up control of my car. It’s absolutely wild to me that someone can take their hands of the steering wheel while doing something else but driving. While driving.i got really anxious here.
Hey Mav, if you see this I just wanted to make a recommendation for you. If you can find some, I suggest you order some japanese MRE's. I've had the pleasure or eating those a few times and oh man are they incredible. Each one usually comes with two types of rice, white and another style. They also have the beat entrées. My favorite was curry rice with a pork cutlet. They also have many different stir fries with either pork, beef, chicken, or even fish. The fish is always a nice filet of salmon, mackerel, or a type of bass. Just sooooo good, and very filling. Well, just wanted to pass along a recommendation. Loved this video, I'm a big fan or MRE's. I will warn you though, if you ever see the American MRE cheese omelet......chuck it. The foulest grossest thing I ever put in my mouth. Have fun in Canada.
It's good to see someone getting some enjoyment from an MRE. I think that in all of the years I've had MRE's... I've only used the heater a handful of times.
As a kid in a military family I always thought these were cool as hell. I felt like a badass soldier whenever I would eat them so I would beg my dad to let me have one haha. To this day I keep some in my car in case of emergencies. My dad has a bunch in our garage from his army days.
@6:57 MRE's aren't the healthiest with all the sugar and preservatives, but you burn a lot of calories wearing 70+ lbs of gear all day. #13 (I think, may have been 12) Cheese Tortellini was my favorite. Best main course and snacks in my opinion. Spaghetti wasn't bad either. Edit: Also if you eat mostly MREs they can make you constipated. Rumor had it the gum had laxative in it to help with that. Not sure if that was true.
Mav the one thing that I have learned from watching your videos is the people around the country and world like when u went to Mexico u have met some really amazing people over the years and I think that’s so dope it shows humans aren’t as bad as we think that there still might be hope for humanity good shit mav KEEP ON TRUCKING
I like military food especially the spaghetti I've had all kinds when hurricane Katrina hit the coast that's what they gave us to eat it was actually pretty fun and enjoyable the thing I miss the most is the strawberry milkshake they no longer make it for some reason but that was my favorite drink that they made it was actually quite delicious
im pretty sure they still make it unless i just had an old MRE from before it discontinued but they also have cappuccino and irish cream drink mixes now and theyre my favorite
I always love seeing what goodies are in the pack. I still crack up that Steve Wallis calls the MRE powder coffee creamer "coffee whitener". Looks like you're having an epic trip. Can't wait to see what else you're going to do
Good to see our rep as Canadians is well founded. Literally the first person you run into allows you to park on their land within minutes of meeting you. Help's you're incredibly polite yourself, it goes a long way up here.
MRE’s are designed to be high carbohydrate, high calorie, to provide you energy while you are out on the field. Just imagine carrying a 40 pound rucksack on a hike for many hours at a time plus holding at the ready your 7 pound M-4 rifle, to include the weight from all of your military gear and clothing that your wearing, the MRE’s help restore your energy levels.
Never had an MRE myself but you really didn’t make them look too bad. I appreciate the real looks of life on the road. The back seat of your truck looks like organized chaos exactly like my car while I’m traveling with my pup. You’ve been part of the inspiration for my own travels and videos. Keep on Trucking!
Bruh when you were showing the mre and opening it while driving while not using your hands on the steering wheel I was like “who’s driving!!??” 😂😭 my anxiety was like whelp
I ate those for almost every meal for a year when I was in Afghanistan. You can do a lot with them. Try and get yourself some dehydrated breakfast ones. Those ones are amazing.
I always have multiple MREs and water in my vehicles. They're excellent for road trips and I couldn't say how many times we have used them for convenience and necessity. Make sure they have the FRH (flameless ration heater) in them. Our favorite is the chili mac. Safe travels and sow those wild oats young man.
Mav we love your videos, my Son and I enjoy every single one of them. My son wanted me to tell you to please keep your eyes on the road. He said, Dad Mav takes his eyes from the road for longer time while explaining everything he is doing. Please be save, we appreciate all your videos. Keep on trucking from Southern California🤙
These type of MREs I could only wish I could eat when I was in the military. All we got was a box filled with canned food. These would definitely hit the spot for me. Heck, I'd probably buy some of these to eat at home just to try them out because some of these MREs look really good. I'm so grateful to have Mav tho uploading videos like these for us
K-rations and C-rations? I've seen those. The plain silver cans. I heard that in Vietnam the peanut butter made them too thirsty so they couldn't eat it, but they couldn't throw it away because Charlie could make bombs with it. So they had to hump all these cans of peanut butter all day. Poor bastards.
The best MRE is definitely the Chili Macaroni. Absolutely slaps. I used to go out to my local army surplus store when I was in college and buy an entire box of them for my diners for the month.
Reason they put a lot of carbs and especially sugar in mre is cause of the energy water expenditure. Especially in dry climates like mid east that sucks water from your body. Salt helps hydrate and sugar gives energy but also slows the processing of water in your system from just urinating most out so you get more of the electrolites and such than if you just normally drink water. Adding salt and sugar to your water too is very very good for you. I do it at work and its a massive boost
That heat pad for your entree is nice. Back in the day, it was all small cans of stuff, which you either had to eat cold, or heat by a fire if you were lucky enough to have one. The stuff in the cans was like Dinty Moore beef stew with globs of fat on the top, no matter what the label said it was. The second can could be apple sauce or pudding. There were also the small packets with the instant stuff, peanut butter or cheese, crackers, matches, and sanitary stuff to help you clean up a bit. These were all very pre-9/11. I remember seeing on the news in the early 2000's how MRE's were updated, and thinking lucky bastards... except for the whole war can kill you thing. When I was in, there was no reason to update them, so what was good enough for our fathers and grandfathers was good enough for us. Like we had a choice.
I’ve seen a lot of people getting mad for not having his hand on the wheel but I bet he’s driving with his knee. It’s actually not dangerous if you know what you are doing. Driving with your knee is a very valuable skill if there is an emergency and you can’t pull over. I had to learn the hard way but I was going to tell him that it’s impressive that he can go that long. I know most people aren’t comfortable driving that way but again it’s a really good skill to have. Maybe don’t do it for a video because it can be illegal depending on where you are but either way great job and I love your videos!

This is super cool
@@shubhamvashist8529 it was..we wanted to honor him and his accomplishment..he received no compensation for his work outside of his regular salary, yet he and another man changed the world through their invention. Retort pouches are all over the place. The company he worked for sold it to the U.S. Army and that was the end of it. When he died it was just fitting that we serve them. It was cool trying all of the new stuff.
Sorry about your dad, this was a cool story though. Thanks for sharing
Just came upon your channel this week and i love every video! It has inspired me to travel and youtube .
Apparently the chicken a la king didn't age well, Steve1989 hated it
I got M&M's in an MRE once, and they definitely weren't like normal M&M's.
How does the heater work tho? Confused
@@abraham8772 A magnesium redox that activates by adding water I guess 🤷🏼♂️
I was thinking this exactly the whole time, gotta make sure the water gets in contact with all of the heater pads, roll it around a bit first
This is crazy that it actually heats it up!
Also the beverage base mixes best in lukewarm or warm water, and many of the desserts are improved by heating them
Awesome to see the diverse crowd that Mav brings in. Also anyone who is Erving or has served, thank you for serving🙏🏼
During this pandemic my family was given a bunch of military food and we enjoyed it and it was conversation starter to every different item. It really bothered me the way he was driving.
kis knees were on the wheel but i agree
As a vet I can say they have improved a lot over the years, Their not light on calories because of how active military is expected to be, also could be 1 mre a day in bad circumstances…

They have substantially improved over the years.

Mav I want to say thank you. I started watching this video as soon as it was posted yesterday and I'm just now finishing it this morning. I pulled it up like 4 times to try and get through it during my night as entertainment and it just was a constant item in my watch later waiting for me. Holy Shit, no one is commenting on keeping at least one hand on your steering wheel. I realize you might have modern lane monitoring but machines can malfunction. At 70mph, not enough time to compensate if something screws up, imo.
Totally agree, a truly disgraceful display of driving. Unsubscribed and reported for this.

As fast as we eat it(sugar) we burn it off(great energy source), well I did at least being in the Infantry so I can only speak on behalf of the US Army infantry. Tabasco sauce was always a go to for pretty much every meal to add some extra flavor (in some case add flavor in general). Great video.
Almost gonna hit 2 million, no where better to celebrate it than Sioux Lookout Ontario, world class fishing dude!
Emergencies? These are issued to troops for normal eating. Idk where you got that from but they are not for emergencies.

You just peaked my interest. Gonna have to go find a couple
Japanese are good, but french RCIR-S are the best, lil harder to make cause you have a little flame stove but workable
I will have to look into this for my hurricane emergency supply storage.
It's good to see someone getting some enjoyment from an MRE. I think that in all of the years I've had MRE's... I've only used the heater a handful of times.
I guess it’s smart that water isn’t really required I mean especially if it’s scarce you don’t wanna waste it in the MRE
Mav never disappoints with the content 🔥🔥 So close to 2 mil, keep killing it and doing you, aka keep on trucking 💯

I would never get tired of these everything you need
The best MRE is definitely the Chili Macaroni. Absolutely slaps. I used to go out to my local army surplus store when I was in college and buy an entire box of them for my diners for the month.
I like the pulled-chicken in BBQ sauce. Put it in a tortilla and it's shockingly good. Comes with peanut M&Ms too.
@@Ranstone oh my gosh! You are bringing back memories when I was in! That was my favorite. Got me through the rough days.
Now eat it cold and sprinkle some sand on it for the true MRE experience.
This is true😂😂
Reason they put a lot of carbs and especially sugar in mre is cause of the energy water expenditure. Especially in dry climates like mid east that sucks water from your body. Salt helps hydrate and sugar gives energy but also slows the processing of water in your system from just urinating most out so you get more of the electrolites and such than if you just normally drink water. Adding salt and sugar to your water too is very very good for you. I do it at work and its a massive boost
Right when I was about to comment that you're an idiot for driving and cooking, you pull over lol 😆 you're a good guy Mav.
Vietnam era rations had lucky strikes.
