I think people do misunderstand what consort means. Its not a concubine or a mistress, its literally the spouse of a monarch or other ruler. He does view you as his wife, but naturally the ascendant side is possessive and power hungry so thats where this control comes from. Hence me preferring to keep my Astarion as a spawn and being in a much kinder relationship. But to each their own
his ascendant ending is quite literally the bad ending and i wish more people would acknowledge that, rather than escaping the torture and abuse he endures his fear consumes him and he becomes the abuser he swore to escape from. while i do wish there was an ending where the two of you could be evil together this current ending is def not it lol. keeping him as a spawn is the healthiest thing u could do for him

I kept watching this short cause I felt something is different and frightnening in this. Than I realised it's his whole face, very different from what non Asc. Astarion has and those eyes. Never seen him with such big and frightening eyes, especially when he says YOU ARE MY CONSORT.

I haven’t gone through every ascended Astarion interaction during the epilogue, but I did 1 playthrough of it and the vibe I got was that we were like a treasured pet. And Astarion encouraging us to mingle with “friends” is like taking your dog to the dog park and letting them have fun within a supervised area and letting play them other dogs (“friends”)
One thought I have with his behaviour as ascended, that I can't let go of...It's that Tav's lack of freedom, means that Astarion will never know if they stay with him because they actually want to. Without the option to leave, there isn't truly an option to stay. At least spawn knows that Tav stays by his side because they want to, otherwise, they would have left. With ascended, Tav has no actual choice. And Astarion will have to live eternally not knowing if Tav would remain by his side given a choice. Though, of course, he doesn't care that much about WHY Tav is by his side, as long as they are there. I find that a bit sad. I much prefer the spawn, I just prefer that my Tav had the opportunity to leave, if he for whatever reason starts treating her badly. I don't really blame anyone going down the ascended route; he is still a great character. But I personally have too many issues with the lack of freedom. Sure, I can see my Tav staying with him even if she had that freedom. But freedom is most valuable for those who don't have it. So I can absolutely see that Tav would start wishing for it. Not necessarily because they want to leave, but because they don't get to decide that themselves. A golden cage isn't a problem until it's locked. And ascended locks it. But yeah...to me, the fact that ascended can never know if the one he loves, loves him enough to WANT to stay, even if given the choice. That insecurity isn't something I would ever want him to experience. So my Tav will not adcend him, ever. Also, my Tav is dark urge. A lifetime of being compelled by Baahl, and bound to him, she wouldn't want to tie herself to someone that way again. She want the freedom to make her own decisions, and she want Astarion to have the same. And ascended will always be a slave to his powers. And as his consort, Tav is a slave to him.
Really comprehensive thoughts, I 100% agree, there are many issues in relationship with ascended Astarion, and more freedom understanding and kindness with the spawn
Tav can run off with Karlach to Avernus, and romanced ascended Astarion will just like: “I miss you. It’s a shame our time came to an end, though” Tav is his tadpoless spawn so he could have stopped her from leaving if he wanted to. I’m not sure if this was an oversight of the writers, or if Astarion is okay with Tav leaving under the right circumstances. Either way, we know Ascended Astarion is still considerate of Tav’s desires (as long as that desire isn’t to break up), and there’s really no evidence he’d flip a switch and start acting cruel out of the blue. The only sour taste in my mouth is how he’ll patronize Tav, but otherwise Ascended Astarion is living his best life, who’s fulfilled with Tav as his forever lover, and I’m happy for them. Is spawn Astarion back to eating on rats? Or is Tav in the position of having influence over Astarion because he’s reliant upon feeding on them? I could easily spin Spawnstarion as a bad ending for him as well.
To those of you who experienced this ending because it’s something you could do safely in a video game, go off. To those of you who think this would be bearable as a real relationship? You can do better. People like this always get worse.
I came from a former relationship like this. Idk if it has been my trauma outlet but ALL fictional men I love are like this. Posessive and controlling, kinda damaged. But my Husband is such a loving and golden retriever bf. The opposite of my fictional fantasies.
The affection he feels for Tav is different from the others, probably because Tav was the best person he knew. Imagine Wyll who kept making nasty comments like "how's the rat diet going?" What kind of affection would you have for a person like that? Remembering that everyone likes Tav, and if Tav was great to them, they never said anything like that to Tav.
I think his reaction to tav wanting freedom here reminds me of a figurative finger trap. The harder you try to pull away, the harder he tries to hold onto you cuz ur almost feeding into his insecurities. I like to think the opposite is also true.
I agree. My ascended Astarion was much nicer. Yeah, there's an undertone of control, but I don't fight it and he's down for pretty much anything. I suggested traveling and he was like "yeah, maybe we'll stay abroad for a while. Whatever we want"

I cant do the ascended anymore. Just... Sadly brought out his worst traits. Where... When he stays a spawn.. he gives up freedom of the sun for freedom with you. And who is to say they can't find a cure or potion for sun resistance? I made a drow bard and my headcanon is they went to live in the under dark until they could find a way to make spawn Astarion able to be in the sun, if that's possible.
I'm kinda sad when Tav asked about freedom. The way Astarion answered, it was clearly not the first time Tav had questioned it. For me it's a sign for a toxic relationship that has yet to come if Astarion insist on continuing to control us
I like it. It's like, finally a game that shows the consequences of your actions without going back. I always hated that, as if, there were no consequences to any decisions, or like you can reverse it, or whatever. This is a relationship that's never going to end, he did say forever and I'm glad he's sticking to it. Besides, he's rich now and he can look in the mirror and he can eat food and he can live in a palace and he has parties. I'm not. gonna take that away from him just because I want him to be what I want him to be. That's toxic too. I don't know, I know it's supposed to be a bad ending but, I live in California, Los Angeles specificall. We see these guys all the time, and they live happily ever after with OC housewives, having lunch wine, and just swallowing up those narcissism, but at the same time, have great medical coverage, plastic surgery whenever they choose to and unlike this pale vampire, a lot of those guys that are contract agents, contract, attorneys, businessman, or real estate mogul, attorneys, divorce, or entertainment, or in the medical field like plastic surgeons or whatever, that makes bacon in California, at least this guy won't ditch you for younger model. You'll see so many 50-year-old guys dating 20-year-old girls because they decide to ditch their wife of 30 years for a younger model. At least he's faithful, so, he's not a bad guy. I've dated worse then ascended vampire here, and hey, at least he wants a commitment.

It's interesting to think about this considering Atarion's background...compared to when he was under Cazador's control, this IS 1000% better treatmeant. Not that it"s an excuse--Astarion knows full well what freedom really is--but his perspective is exceptionally warped by the abuse he's experienced from the last 200 years.

All Astarion wanted from Tav in act one is safety, and was willing to trade himself for it. Now he's forcing the same safety onto Tav. Whether they want it or not.
Its like he csnt comprehend why youd want to be away from him. Hes given you everything he thinks you need without realize it comes off as smothering. In his brain, you have to love him; there is no othee option. He will make you love him. Hes so powerful ascended, but equally as fragile.
…the fact that Astarion, who became a comfort character for me, after Ascension acts just like my ex terryfies me. Oh he was sweet at first, he was also charming but then he turned my life into a living nightmare for five years and continued to do so for next three even when I was finally free from him. It’s so frickin similar here - posessive, controling, acts charming but the moment you ask about freedom, some space or privacy, he goes off, only to turn back into his charming persona again. Great writing, for sure.
I mentioned this in another short of Ascended Astarion, but when he ascends, the cycle of abuse starts anew. Only this time, you the player are the victim, and you get to witness the consequences of your actions. He becomes everything that he feared from Cazador, and you have to ask yourself one thing: How long will it be until he has you buried alive to punish you for misbehaving or wanting your freedom?
The only good thing to come from the Ascended Astarion arc is all the Batstarion fanart. He may be acting like an ahole, but damn is he an adorable bat! 🦇

Tav is not his spawn, they're his bride/groom, the turning ritual was completely different from what Astarion described was done to him by Casador. Tav is free and why would you agree to his offer turn you into a vampire anyway if you didn't want this, like, it's not a light decision, should've thought it out better before

The mechanics of this in Bg3 are quite vague, so both you and i can be right or wrong, maybe Astarion is just messing with Tav's head and is lying that they can't leave because he desperately wants Tav to stay with him, he is just as insecure as he was before the ascension, probably more

Astarion doesn't see that he's become what he hated. He thinks treating Tav better than he was makes it better. He's forgotten entirely that freedom and autonomy were two of things he craved when he was a spawn.
I think it was in a runesmith video but if I remember right he mentioned that vampires emotions from before they turned are amplified so I’m guessing that’s what happened with astarion and his care/love/appreciation or whatever you call it for you turns in to straight up obsession causing him to be possessive and jealous
While I don’t think I’d ascend him because I think pre-ascension Astarion would be appalled by the way he acts after ascending, I will say he clearly still wants you after ascension. Otherwise he’d let you be a regular spawn and choose a different consort. It would be pretty easy.

Being his spawn is such an interesting abuse trap for the PC to find themselves in. Because you can learn he will never make you equal, he will never let you leave, and you are now stuck under his control forever. But he still puts flowery language around it that there are still people who unironically don't think it's an abusive relationship. It's very reflective of IRL abuse. You don't realize you're being abused because the abuser uses the right words. Like calling you 'consort' instead of 'spawn' dispite never making you his equal. He could make you a vampire bride but he doesn't because he would loose the control he has over you.

@@milk_tea9812 usually people talk about the vampire bride ritual but that requires both parties to drink from eachother conciously and makes both parties equal and full vampires. In the game you're only ever a spawn. You pass out when he turns you and says he gave only a drop so you can still be in the sun. So it's pretty much the same relationship as he had with Cazedor, just you can be in the sun.
I mean, the guy's basically saying he wants to give you the entire world on a silver platter and has gone through hell to do it... so the question he's having a hard time with is: "Why isn't that enough for you to want to stay with me?" Plus, taking into account that you could have steered him away from this path all through the game, from what I understand, I'd be just as annoyed, like, "I thought this was what you wanted..."

There are a lot of assumptions I don't think are necessarily true. It is possible that he'll settle down eventually. While it's true vampires are power hungry, Asterion himself wasn't different as a spawn, was he? It was his motives that made him different than his master, and it might still be the same ... Asterion may still be masking fear and insecurity, which has grown stronger by the shock of finally "having it all", and being certain something is about to happen to take it all away again. ... I suspect that as he could grow before, he still can grow now, but he needs time to realize the world isn't going to crash down around him, and to recover from the abuse he suffered. It's understandable when he's confronted with Tav wanting freedom this way that he would react as he does. He's not had time to put his past behind him, and for someone that was treated the way he was by his master, it's understandable that he'd be irritated by Tav's complaining about what is... Actually standard for most royalty/nobility...

You know before this epilogue I used to think ascended Astarion was really hot (still do to an extent, I’m too much of a dio simp to not find it attractive) even though I am staunchly a Vampire Spawn Astarion fan. But after this epilogue came out… and these conversations including the way he says he’s always watching… it’s really made me feel super icky. Honestly though I’m obsessed with the line delivery and how it’s made me completely go “oh shit no no yep ascended is awful.” Once again amazing performance from Neil and the writing team to bring out such whiplash emotions in me. Really puts it into perspective how manipulative he is and once again how easily I can be manipulated 😭😭😂😂
This may be useless commentary but this game has brought to light how much your answers affect your environment and those around you. It also as a person make you realize what you value morally and wouldn’t want for yourself even if you can find it attractive in other situations. I must be looking to deep into it tho 😅

no because this is so upsetting because all astarion wanted was freedom. now he wants to have the control to take yours away and he’s fucking scared. he’s scared of losing you, partly because I think he is still afraid to lose you genuinely, somewhere deep in there, but he also knows what happened the last time a vampire lord lost control over one of his spawn and it spelled his doom. he has to be even more ruthless than cazador in order to keep control, and honestly i think that’s the very thing that will end up sealing that very fate that he’s so desperately trying to control as well.
@fart1745 The possessiveness, overly courteous sweetly-poisonous words; if you watch Labyrinth (1986 film by Jim Henson), David Bowie uses these same tactics to try and seduce Sarah into his court. He may have stolen baby Toby, but it was just a ploy to get to Sarah. Astarion makes me think what would have happened if Sarah had said yes to Jareth.

@@sunnyhill7919that was through specifically the rite of perfect slaughter, which we dont know how to acheive and even if we did we couldnt because the black mass had to be interrupted and cazador had to get killed before the rite could be done. plus even if it was done theres likely an aspect of it where the master has to agree at least at the very end of it and im sure cazador wouldnt no matter what

really, when i look at him im the beggining of our journey he looks so much more different when we still dont know about all the struggles we are going to face. I really enjoyed it when it was not so "serious", like the first night in the forest, it was much more romantic somehow!

I chose to let him ascend but have a good friendship with him. I then chose to treat our friendship as sort of a Professor X and Magento frenemy rivalry where if he stepped out of line I’d stop him myself. A sort of “devil that you know” kind of relationship, and I thought it was the coolest outcome, that implied an eventual new adventure.
I cackled at "Gods not this again". I'd bring it up all the time just to get a reaction. Hopefully he wouldn't start beating me or locking me in a coffin for a year. 😅
God the look in his eye when he says "You are my consort" is actually terrifying and he's never scared me before. You never see him look at you like this any other time. I love Astarion but no way am I ever making him ascended
very sad to think about how this is almost exactly the same kind of behavior he suffered through. Him? Astarion? Mocking you asking for freedom of choice? Ascendant Astarion really is bad ending... :(
In a game, you don't think much about the dialog, but imagine actually being in a relationship like this. It'd be awful. Ascended Astarion still makes sure Tav is taken care of, but he doesn't let Tav actually have much freedom. It's all about control and power, and Astarion is essentially taking away the freedom that he so desperately wanted for himself from another person who he's supposed to love. Spawn Astarion all the way.

That is the point. It’s the irony of the power turning him into the thing he hated the most. If you read Cazador’s mind when he’s in his coffin he basically says “yeah I’m immortal and powerful but I hate this ‘life’ so much” because Cazador also became exactly like his abusive master. Cursed to continue the cycle of abuse.

I think people do misunderstand what consort means. Its not a concubine or a mistress, its literally the spouse of a monarch or other ruler. He does view you as his wife, but naturally the ascendant side is possessive and power hungry so thats where this control comes from. Hence me preferring to keep my Astarion as a spawn and being in a much kinder relationship. But to each their own
his ascendant ending is quite literally the bad ending and i wish more people would acknowledge that, rather than escaping the torture and abuse he endures his fear consumes him and he becomes the abuser he swore to escape from. while i do wish there was an ending where the two of you could be evil together this current ending is def not it lol. keeping him as a spawn is the healthiest thing u could do for him

I haven’t gone through every ascended Astarion interaction during the epilogue, but I did 1 playthrough of it and the vibe I got was that we were like a treasured pet. And Astarion encouraging us to mingle with “friends” is like taking your dog to the dog park and letting them have fun within a supervised area and letting play them other dogs (“friends”)
One thought I have with his behaviour as ascended, that I can't let go of...It's that Tav's lack of freedom, means that Astarion will never know if they stay with him because they actually want to. Without the option to leave, there isn't truly an option to stay. At least spawn knows that Tav stays by his side because they want to, otherwise, they would have left.
With ascended, Tav has no actual choice. And Astarion will have to live eternally not knowing if Tav would remain by his side given a choice. Though, of course, he doesn't care that much about WHY Tav is by his side, as long as they are there. I find that a bit sad. I much prefer the spawn, I just prefer that my Tav had the opportunity to leave, if he for whatever reason starts treating her badly.
I don't really blame anyone going down the ascended route; he is still a great character. But I personally have too many issues with the lack of freedom. Sure, I can see my Tav staying with him even if she had that freedom. But freedom is most valuable for those who don't have it. So I can absolutely see that Tav would start wishing for it. Not necessarily because they want to leave, but because they don't get to decide that themselves.
A golden cage isn't a problem until it's locked. And ascended locks it.
But yeah...to me, the fact that ascended can never know if the one he loves, loves him enough to WANT to stay, even if given the choice. That insecurity isn't something I would ever want him to experience. So my Tav will not adcend him, ever.
Also, my Tav is dark urge. A lifetime of being compelled by Baahl, and bound to him, she wouldn't want to tie herself to someone that way again. She want the freedom to make her own decisions, and she want Astarion to have the same. And ascended will always be a slave to his powers. And as his consort, Tav is a slave to him.
Really comprehensive thoughts, I 100% agree, there are many issues in relationship with ascended Astarion, and more freedom understanding and kindness with the spawn

Tav is his tadpoless spawn so he could have stopped her from leaving if he wanted to. I’m not sure if this was an oversight of the writers, or if Astarion is okay with Tav leaving under the right circumstances.
Either way, we know Ascended Astarion is still considerate of Tav’s desires (as long as that desire isn’t to break up), and there’s really no evidence he’d flip a switch and start acting cruel out of the blue. The only sour taste in my mouth is how he’ll patronize Tav, but otherwise Ascended Astarion is living his best life, who’s fulfilled with Tav as his forever lover, and I’m happy for them.
Is spawn Astarion back to eating on rats? Or is Tav in the position of having influence over Astarion because he’s reliant upon feeding on them? I could easily spin Spawnstarion as a bad ending for him as well.

I like it. It's like, finally a game that shows the consequences of your actions without going back. I always hated that, as if, there were no consequences to any decisions, or like you can reverse it, or whatever. This is a relationship that's never going to end, he did say forever and I'm glad he's sticking to it. Besides, he's rich now and he can look in the mirror and he can eat food and he can live in a palace and he has parties. I'm not. gonna take that away from him just because I want him to be what I want him to be. That's toxic too. I don't know, I know it's supposed to be a bad ending but, I live in California, Los Angeles specificall. We see these guys all the time, and they live happily ever after with OC housewives, having lunch wine, and just swallowing up those narcissism, but at the same time, have great medical coverage, plastic surgery whenever they choose to and unlike this pale vampire, a lot of those guys that are contract agents, contract, attorneys, businessman, or real estate mogul, attorneys, divorce, or entertainment, or in the medical field like plastic surgeons or whatever, that makes bacon in California, at least this guy won't ditch you for younger model. You'll see so many 50-year-old guys dating 20-year-old girls because they decide to ditch their wife of 30 years for a younger model. At least he's faithful, so, he's not a bad guy. I've dated worse then ascended vampire here, and hey, at least he wants a commitment.

It's interesting to think about this considering Atarion's background...compared to when he was under Cazador's control, this IS 1000% better treatmeant. …the fact that Astarion, who became a comfort character for me, after Ascension acts just like my ex terryfies me. Oh he was sweet at first, he was also charming but then he turned my life into a living nightmare for five years and continued to do so for next three even when I was finally free from him. It’s so frickin similar here - posessive, controling, acts charming but the moment you ask about freedom, some space or privacy, he goes off, only to turn back into his charming persona again. Great writing, for sure.
I mentioned this in another short of Ascended Astarion, but when he ascends, the cycle of abuse starts anew. Only this time, you the player are the victim, and you get to witness the consequences of your actions.
He becomes everything that he feared from Cazador, and you have to ask yourself one thing: How long will it be until he has you buried alive to punish you for misbehaving or wanting your freedom?

I think it was in a runesmith video but if I remember right he mentioned that vampires emotions from before they turned are amplified so I’m guessing that’s what happened with astarion and his care/love/appreciation or whatever you call it for you turns in to straight up obsession causing him to be possessive and jealous
While I don’t think I’d ascend him because I think pre-ascension Astarion would be appalled by the way he acts after ascending, I will say he clearly still wants you after ascension. Otherwise he’d let you be a regular spawn and choose a different consort. It would be pretty easy.

Being his spawn is such an interesting abuse trap for the PC to find themselves in. Because you can learn he will never make you equal, he will never let you leave, and you are now stuck under his control forever. But he still puts flowery language around it that there are still people who unironically don't think it's an abusive relationship. It's very reflective of IRL abuse. You don't realize you're being abused because the abuser uses the right words. Like calling you 'consort' instead of 'spawn' dispite never making you his equal. He could make you a vampire bride but he doesn't because he would loose the control he has over you.

In the game you're only ever a spawn. You pass out when he turns you and says he gave only a drop so you can still be in the sun. So it's pretty much the same relationship as he had with Cazedor, just you can be in the sun.

There are a lot of assumptions I don't think are necessarily true. It is possible that he'll settle down eventually. While it's true vampires are power hungry, Asterion himself wasn't different as a spawn, was he? It was his motives that made him different than his master, and it might still be the same

Asterion may still be masking fear and insecurity, which has grown stronger by the shock of finally "having it all", and being certain something is about to happen to take it all away again.

I suspect that as he could grow before, he still can grow now, but he needs time to realize the world isn't going to crash down around him, and to recover from the abuse he suffered. It's understandable when he's confronted with Tav wanting freedom this way that he would react as he does. He's not had time to put his past behind him, and for someone that was treated the way he was by his master, it's understandable that he'd be irritated by Tav's complaining about what is... Actually standard for most royalty/nobility...

You know before this epilogue I used to think ascended Astarion was really hot (still do to an extent, I’m too much of a dio simp to not find it attractive) even though I am staunchly a Vampire Spawn Astarion fan.
But after this epilogue came out… and these conversations including the way he says he’s always watching… it’s really made me feel super icky. Honestly though I’m obsessed with the line delivery and how it’s made me completely go “oh shit no no yep ascended is awful.”
Once again amazing performance from Neil and the writing team to bring out such whiplash emotions in me. Really puts it into perspective how manipulative he is and once again how easily I can be manipulated 😭😭😂😂

@@sunnyhill7919that was through specifically the rite of perfect slaughter, which we dont know how to acheive and even if we did we couldnt because the black mass had to be interrupted and cazador had to get killed before the rite could be done. plus even if it was done theres likely an aspect of it where the master has to agree at least at the very end of it and im sure cazador wouldnt no matter what

really, when i look at him im the beggining of our journey he looks so much more different when we still dont know about all the struggles we are going to face. I really enjoyed it when it was not so "serious", like the first night in the forest, it was much more romantic somehow!

I chose to let him ascend but have a good friendship with him. I then chose to treat our friendship as sort of a Professor X and Magento frenemy rivalry where if he stepped out of line I’d stop him myself. A sort of “devil that you know” kind of relationship, and I thought it was the coolest outcome, that implied an eventual new adventure.

In a game, you don't think much about the dialog, but imagine actually being in a relationship like this. It'd be awful. Ascended Astarion still makes sure Tav is taken care of, but he doesn't let Tav actually have much freedom. It's all about control and power, and Astarion is essentially taking away the freedom that he so desperately wanted for himself from another person who he's supposed to love. Spawn Astarion all the way.

That is the point. It’s the irony of the power turning him into the thing he hated the most. If you read Cazador’s mind when he’s in his coffin he basically says “yeah I’m immortal and powerful but I hate this ‘life’ so much” because Cazador also became exactly like his abusive master.
