$100 Honda Spree NQ50 - WILL IT RUN?? How to fix after sitting for 20 years!! RESURRECTION!

- Found this 1986 Honda Spree (NQ50) for sale the other day on Facebook Marketplace. The guy said that the engine was hydro locking with oil (oil was filling up in the cylinder) and preventing him from being able to kick start it. In this video we go through the engine, carburetor clean, exhaust pipe clean and much more as we try to figure out what caused this scooter to get put away for the last 20 yrs!

FabzRustRider like this video 💯keep it up good work.🇬🇧
got my 86 (Iowa) with 1400 miles, for free. Hammer-mechanic had it for 20 yrs. and could not get it started. The plug gaped at 1/4th of an inch! I guess he thought he needed more SPARK!! Cleaned the carb, new plug, got the heavy oil out of the air filter, battery, cleaned up the paint - Ace "Banner Red" is an exact match - straightened the turn signals. She looks and runs like new - 66 mpg, zipping around town, for 8 months, now at 2,500 mi. The air/fuel mixture is crucial to running well, oiling the air-filter should be next-to-nothing.
Nice video! Straight to the point, no annoying dupstep long intros, no fake dramatic faces. Liked and subscribed (you don’t even bug people for that). Thank you !
Thanks for the comment and support!🙏🏼👍🏼
I think you have it a little backward..the auto bystarter starts off retracted which allows additional fuel to flow at startup and during warmup. After a few minutes the bystarter heats up and the plunger extends a bit, cutting off the additional flow of fuel. Your fix will allow for easy starting but you may be running very rich after warmup.
Nice job getting the scoot up and running, again!
I agree, automatic choke.
Hey there, just some words if advice from a fellow Spree owner! I noticed that the previous owner must have blocked off the oil pump, and this is ok but you need to grind off the gears on the pump because if it isn't moving the gears will grind and cause metal shavings in the crank case! Also put the exhaust over a fire for a few hours rotating and banging on the ground every once and a while to clean it out. It also sounds like the carb needs tuning. Get her going good! Love to see these get going
big sandwich good advice I will do that. Thanks!
When you say gears, are you talking about gear shifting?
Zeke Polaris no the oil pump has gears on it. If you run premix your supposed to remove the oil pump and get a little block off plate or “grind off” the gears on the oil pump shaft.
@@Mechanic_kid One of the issues of English, 1 word can mean 15 different things. 🤣
I saw another video and they just pulled out the oil pump shaft complete with drive gear then re mounted the pump with no drive attached.
I like your videos, I grew up doing stuff like this. My son is 18 and he is just getting into old cars and bikes himself, he loves your Honda's and Celica.
Got my grandpas spree after he passed. Been sitting outside for awhile (sevenths years) in the shed. Now I’m gonna try and fix it up with my dad.
That’s awesome! Hope you get it going. Let me know if you have any questions👍🏼
@@Mechanic_kid Thanks I've already have taken of the body (I think that's what it called) now we gotta get a new battery and stuff!
Pretty awesome!.. sold mine a few years back and miss it.. Spent many years cruising summer days/nights on the Spree. I think I might have to find another one at some point.. possibly make it an electric conversion project.
That would be pretty cool to make one electric! Not sure that’s ever been done. Keep me posted👍🏼
I don't know anything about gas engines but I am really considering buying a small gas scooter or moped. Your video is inspirational, basically demystifying the whole machine and confirming that these things aren't really complicated. I think I will take the plunge and buy an old scooter and get it running.
Do it! These old 50cc scooters are very basic and would be great for learning mechanics on! You can always leave a comment if you have any questions or get stuck👍🏼
@@Mechanic_kid That is very generous of you. I will get back to you once I decide on a piece of kit. I live in a third floor walkup and winter is coming to Canada. I wonder if I can work on it during the winter and get it ready for spring? Starting the thing on my balcony might be a bit concerning to the neighbours.
Get a gilera runner, its awesome
What an excellent video. You did well. The narration was on point, your skills show. Thorough in your problem solving and analytical skills.
Thank you Mauricio🙏🏼
I've been doing the same kind of small engine work for a few months now! I recognize those PDX Streets :) Keep up the awesome videos!!!!
Just bought mine for 200 and mate can’t stress this enough. This videos is gonna help me a fuckton when I’m trying to diagnose mine. Cheers 🥂
Oh nice pickup! Lmk if you run into anything, I can try and help you out👍🏼
@@Mechanic_kid Here in Australia its called the Honda Nifty 50 (NQ50) and i was wondering if every year came with a kick start. I'm gonna go pick it up hopefully tomorrow. it needs a starter and a battery to apparently get it running
@@aricroy4258 no not all years had kickstrters. From what I’ve seen the ones with kick start are more rare. I think they are better because if your battery dies you can still start it...
Thanks for all the tips and tricks! I will be using this to get my 87 running in the future.
You're a great mechanic buddy!
Im New in the World of mechanics and your videos helped me a lot Thx!!
Bought a nice 87 a couple years ago, oil had leaked past the check valve and filled the crankcase. I alternated between kicking it over and pulling into a wheelie position to drain everything. Eventually it ran and after a while I could get the rpms up without fear of hydroloc and bending the rod. Smoked like James Bond for a few miles until the oil burned off. I add oil to the tank before a ride and suck left over out with a large syringe when done, if it's going to sit more then three days.
I'm glad I found your channel. I picked up I think its an 1987 Honda 50, I'm going through your videos great job cant wait to check out the Toyota Celica videos. I was curious if you converted to weber Carbs. Makes a huge acceleration improvement. Used to sell through "mail Order" back in the early 80's. Love your channel and your educational style.
I miss having my 1986 Honda spree. It got stolen. I want another one so bad it is so fun to ride. I even had a Bluetooth a little stereo on it
Good video. I just got a special edition spree with 100 miles that was hydrolocking
very nice! is the special edition white? or blue? did you figure out why it was hydro locking? filling up with oil?
Awesome ! Had one in 1986 !
This is awesome man, thanks so much. Working on an Aero NB50 now!
You can just rebuild the starter. Use a Suzuki LT-80 starter rebuild kit. It has the same parts you need. I see you picked up a set of noiseguy's carbon reeds. Good choice. I'm not sure what fuel mix ratio you are using, but on a Spree, you are best off using 40:1 if doing a premix. I'd suggest keeping the pump though. As for the oil shooting out the pipe, I'm guessing that came from the crankcase not the pipe. More then likely what had happened is the O-ring inside the pump dried out and cracked so the person decided to run premix (probably 32:1), and slowly saturated the bottom of the crank case with unused oil. Another reason to run it 40:1 if going premix. The Spree is finicky and the pump runs linear to rpm. Meaning around idle range, it's putting out around 50:1, but when revving to say 6,000 rpm or higher, will put out 32:1... more like 36:1. Sprees are fun to build up. Mine now pushes over 4Hp and will do 52mph@ 11,000rpm. Here's mine on the dyno at 8,000rpm: ua-cam.com/video/U1MUmUUJbbs/v-deo.html
Thanks for the info! Dang your Spree rips! That’s awesome!
Hey man love the video. I just picked up a spree that was my grandmas, and has been sitting for probably 20 years. I’ve done basically everything you did (except get to the cylinder) I have never done this before so I’m trying to learn as I go, and I can get the thing started now, by spraying starting fluid in the air intake, but I can’t get it to stay running. When I give it throttle, it cuts out. Any advice on what I should do next?
Ok so it’s not getting fuel. Make sure your carburetor is very clean. Pull out all the jets and spray carb clean through all the little holes. If you get that clean and it still doesn’t start I would say it’s your bystarter (electric choke). Take part of a latex glove and use the bracket to basically cap of the top of the hole. Those are the two most common problems causing these to not run. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes👍🏼
@@Mechanic_kid ok, so I cleaned the carb really well, won’t stay running.
I tried plugging the bystarter with a latex glove, that didn’t work either.
I got a new bystarter, still won’t stay.
I am not sure how those vacuum petcocks work…but I think maybe that could be the issue? If I take the fuel line off of the carb, there is no fuel. I know that there shouldn’t be, since it is a vacuum somehow, but if I am not sure how to test it. I tried sucking on the vacuum line, and nothing came out the fuel line, same when blowing on the line. Are you familiar with those and how to test them?
@@TylerPeck that would be the last thing that it could be! I’ve had one fail before. Your supposed to be able to suck on the vacuum hose and then fuel should go to the carb. I think those are only like $15 so wouldn’t hurt to toss on and see if that fixes it. You could also try hand choking it. Take off the air cleaner and cover with your hand about 90% of the carburetor hole. Should start right up and stay running if you keep your hand there. As it heats up you could maybe just cover 50%. If it starts starving for fuel go back to covering it 90%... sometimes these thing just need to run a little bit when they’ve been sitting. Hope that helps! Lmk how it goes
@@Mechanic_kid I’m pretty sure it’s the petcock. I ordered a new one. But since it won’t be here for a while, I rigged up a funnel that just feeds gas into the carb and the thing starts right up, and keeps running. I think we solved it. Thank you for your help!
@@TylerPeck did the new petcock solve your problem?
Great job on getting it fixed.
Co-worker is giving me her belated mother's 1984 Honda Aero 80 that has been sitting covered on side of the house for several years. Comes with title, keys and manual. We'll see how things go.
Good video. I bought a Honda Vision NE50. An 86 scooter from my teenage so you can work out how old I am now. Even though I've been on bigger bikes for 36 years I found the version I liked as a teenager but never had because I started on a 125, now riding 1300's so this is the smallest bike I've ever had. She doesn't start very well so going to have to give her a good service. Although I maintain/service my own bikes your video gives me an idea what I'm looking at as these scooters under the plastics are pretty much the same. Was under the impression the solenoid was an automatic choke? Have to check the manual. Thanks again.
I see you have a nice collection of things. Like the King of Scooters the Vespa
Always wanted one of these when I was younger but my mom said no 😪. Now I’m 47 and still want one lol
Wow !! Great video. Tomorrow check something. 💪🏼💪🏼. Thanks !!!!
Glad you found it entertaining/helpful👍🏼
I have a Honda Nifty 50, it goes well. I think you stripped your's back too far. A lot of that was not necessary. But one thing you did do, which I have not done to my bike, (but I will do it now) is to re-do the electrical connectors on the spark plug's capacitor. Thanks. I also didn't know where to refill the oil in the back, until you said you empty & refill in the same hole.
Glad you found the video helpful! Best of luck with your Nifty50👍🏼
I enjoyed your video.
I just picked up a Black Honda Spree and the key is missing, should I buy a replacement ignition key or just bypass it. Can I buy a replacement ignition key. Thanks if you answer questions,
My spree is back, has a kick starter and a battery.
Great job dude 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Oscar🤟🏼
Helpfull well made video cheers from ireland
Great video. When you going to start rebuilding that charger?
Charger is going to be my priority this summer! Make sure your subscribed, there will be lots of videos to come👍🏼
Do you mix the gas ? Whats the ratio ! Just got a Nb50 1983 Honda spree the other day and am diag a few things , got a new battery and have power , just haven’t heard much about fuel ratio
Great job. What kind of Vespa is that?
I love the vids man keep them coming 👏
Great tutorial video i learned alot.
Plug had oil on it that is a good sign 👌spark she is gonna run your a natural you should consider being a motorcycle macanic
Without the automatic choke that things gonna run super rich
Can you do a video showing how to tune or set the stock spree carb. Like how to get the idle air mixture right.
Pretty busy but might be able to for you. Try this and lmk if it works: turn your air mixture all the way in and then back it out 1 1/2 turns. That should be about perfect. If that doesn’t work your carburetor probably need to be removed and cleaned. How’s it run currently?? What’s wrong with it??
@@Mechanic_kid ran good when I got it running after a couple years. But wouldn’t idle properly. Got it to finally idle but would bog down under full acceleration. Messed with idle mixture screw and hasn’t been right since. Bogs bad under full throttle as has trouble starting. Now I can’t get it to start at all. It’s actually an 85 aero 50 so basically same engine but no Kickstarter. I’m going to clean the carb and go from there. Has good compression and ran awesome at first.
@@zkmitchell definitely carb related. Ya start by cleaning it good! I usually remove the bystarter (electric choke) and put a latex rubber cover over top and then put the cracked back on it to hold it down. I think I show this in this video if not one of my other scooter vids. After you clean it, put your hand over the end of the carb where he air filter goes and crank it until you feel gas on your hand. Then just try to start like normal and should fire up. Lmk how it goes👍🏼
A year ago so someone else must have told him also about that bistarter needel thing yes I did the same thing to my scooter put a think rubber clove in it so that it did not suck air in to the cylinders and air intake I found a way to shoot a little fuel in my air brother I but in his case just get a new one
Neat lil bike to work on, restore.
Nice job!
thanks Kevin👍🏼
The bistarter is actually a bimetallic-element choke: When u start, and it´s received 4-5minutes of current, it will heat and expand that much, in order to clog (with its pointy pin) the additional start-fuel-line, that cares for a richer fuel/air-ratio-mix (or, relatively seen, "chokes" the air-ratio in the mix) when coldstarting. This element doesn´t know if your engine is ready for the "normal" fuel/air-ratio-mix after 4-5minutes, so, depending on how cold the element and your engine begin (and considering the 2 reach their targer Temps with different speeds), it may shut off a bit earlier or later than optimal... The problem with them isn´t the thingy itself, but the flimsy mounting-bracket changing its geometry (under the pressure of the expanding thingy) and becoming loose, so, the thingy cannot work properly, its pin misses the hole it has to plug to. Run 12V along it, and watch it expand. If it doesn´t, then it´s broken.
I was going to say this, but you got it.

Great foresight
got a nifty fifty for 50 bucks no kick start needed electric starter just starter her up with a drill and she runs decent ill clean the carb and the rego is on hold so should be easy to get on the road
Ayy that’s awesome man! Nice work👍🏼
I wonder if he put the injection oil in the tank. It’s thicker than the premix and will settle to the lowest point
I have seen that happen before especially when something been sitting for a while. Not exactly sure how it happened but it basically hydro locked up with oil. Common problem with the spree.
If no smoke your engine blows, its 2stroke gas and oil is supposed too smoke, it's perfectly fine,
That bystarter heats up with the engine and is an autochoke.. i may have missed in the video but since no oil injector is installed your running a 2 stroke mix in the tank?
Yep just running premix👍🏼 it takes a second for the bike to warm up but after that it runs great! Was having bad luck with the auto choke...
So we’re just not gonna talk about the fact that this kid has a 1968 Dodge Charger rusting away in his garage?!?!
How tall are u, and how practical was the scooty for your size??? Is my favorite scooter of all in existence, I´d kill for it. I admire my neightbour´s one sometimes... It´s the single one i´ve ever seen.
I’m 6’4. It’s not a fast scooter but fun to ride around the neighborhood! Very light and easy to ride👍🏼
I got one thats been sitting since 88 lol. its got spark and some compression but not firing

Those red liquid pumps disintegrate if you leave fuel in them.

Wanna sell it to me?? Haha
Its not mine haha its my brother in laws but im the one that wants to fix it really
@@thereaperscry8809 gotcha! Well it’s hard to say. Make sure your getting spark. If you are then you probably need to clean the carb and put fresh gas in it. I go through basically everything in the video. If you run into any problems just let me know👍🏼
@@Mechanic_kid what about the starter where would that be located
@@thereaperscry8809 front of the engine! Super small cylinder
I have my spree and unfortunately I cannot get it running no matter what I do I've replaced everything on the engine twice
Start by getting spark then if it still doesn’t run it’s carburetor issue. These are super basic and will like always run if you have spark and fuel
Try this if you haven,t , Remove carb, remove the float bowl and remove the main jet ( flat head screwdriver). Now from inside the carb using screwdriver push out the brass emulsion tube downwards you see in the center , pushes out where the main jet is. Clean that brass tube and all the tiny holes in it.Clean out the main jet and float (needle and seat). Your starting jet or pilot jet is at the base of the small brass tube right beside the main jet and must be cleaned out to run proper. The only way i found to clean this very small hole inside is using a ultra sonic cleaner. Not very expensive and work great for many things. Degreaser worked for me in it 50/50 with water. Now make sure you can blow air through that small brass tube, i slide a small tight fit hose over it to blow through. Bolt er back up and hopefully enjoy some rips on the powerhouse spree. I have a blue 84 up in Ontario. Ride on.......
When anything goes wrong with old motorcycles they can be proper headache especially if u dont know anything about engines
I got a 1984 Honda Spree
Zeke Polaris That’s awesome! I hope this video helps you out if yours isn’t running. They are super fun little scooters!
@@Mechanic_kid Mine runs just needs a new battery.
Zeke Polaris oh nice! Ya the battery acts as a voltage regulator so it’s good to have so you don’t blow out your lights at high rpm’s👍🏼
@@Mechanic_kid And it recharges too!! That is if there was a working battery. Been looking for one but can't find
Zeke Polaris most batteries shops have them. Generic motorcycle battery. If not check eBay
If you're going to be a mechanic you need to learn that two-cycle engines are supposed to smoke the oil mixed with the gas is supposed to make it smoke it supposed to lubricate the engine that's all it has
Hell of a deal bro.thats a pretty expensive scoot running.
Thanks man👍🏼 I try to save them!
Did you end up buying the by starter and if you did Where and how much
shawn lesarge I have not! I would look on eBay. The spree starter should be the same as the Honda Elite 50 SB50 as well. You might even be able to make a little 50cc scooter starter fit, I’ve seen the same looking starter on many little scooters such the Yamaha Riva Razz but not positive if it would fit. Hope this helps👍🏼
@@Mechanic_kid I was talking about that part on the carb the you removed
shawn lesarge they sell the bystarter on eBay for like $10. Basically universal on all these scooters from the 80s. They are cheaply made tho and I’ve had new ones stop working very fast. I found it easier to just block off the top. Hope this helps
@@Mechanic_kid yeah that’s what I did and works now. just need an air filter because keeps shutting off anyways
shawn lesarge cool good luck! If it still only runs for like 3secounds with the air filter, then you probably have a bad bystarter. I haven’t had good luck with the new ones🙄
U have to adjjust the mixture screws also
the thing has the pump blocked off
These are super durable but weak; had one in the 90s. Even plastics were hard to crack
Wil 550 be worth it
The Bendix?
It's SUPPOSED TO S M O K E . IF IT DON'T SMOKE YOU HAVE A PROBLEM.
More smoking on a two-stroke only means more oil to gas ratio not indicative of engine wear
leaky ass oil pumps will fill that crankcase up in short order. where did all my oil go?
